Intestinal parasite infections in immigrant children in the city of Rome, related risk factors and possible impact on nutritional status

Abstract: Background Parasitic diseases can represent a social and economic problem among disadvantaged people - even in developed countries. Due to the limited data available concerning Europe, the aims of the present study were to evaluate the presence of parasites in immigrant children and the risk factors favouring the spread of parasites. Subsequently, the possible correlation between nutritional status and parasitic infections was also investigated. Findings A convenience sample of two hundred and forty seven immigrant children (aged 0–15) attending the Poliambulatorio della Medicina Solidale in Rome was examined. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, and parasitological and anthropometric tests were applied. Chi-squared test and binary logistic multiple-regression models were used for statistical analysis. Thirty-seven children (15%) tested positive to parasites of the following species: Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba coli, Giardia duodenalis, Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides and Strongyloides stercoralis. A monospecific infection was detected in 30 (81%) out of 37 parasitized children, while the others (19%) presented a polyparasitism. The major risk factors were housing, i.e. living in shacks, and cohabitation with other families (p<0.01). Children classified in the lower height Z-scores had a significantly greater prevalence of parasites (30.9%) than the others (p<0.01). Conclusions This study shows that parasite infection in children is still quite common, even in a developed country and that children’s growth and parasitism may be related. Extensive improvements in the living, social and economic conditions of immigrants are urgently needed in order to overcome these problems.

Gossipiboma intra-abdominal: análise de 15 casos

Abstract: background: inadvertent intra-abdominal retained surgical sponges and instruments remains unsolved problem in spite of prophylactic measurements. we reviewed our experience with fifteen patients who had retained abdominal surgical sponges. methods: medical records from 15 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of gossypiboma after abdominal surgery treated at gaffré-guinle university hospital between january 1987 and january 2007, were retrospectively reviewed. data from demographic features, operative findings, and outcomes were recorded. results: there were eleven (73%) females and four males (27%) with a median age of 50 years old. previous operations were gynecological (40%), gastrointestinal (27%), obstetrical (13%), urological (13%), and oncological (7%). in two cases, previous operations were performed on emergency basis. the interval from the initial operation ranged from one week to 50 months, with median of eight months. the main clinical presentation were pain and abdominal mass, and intestinal obstruction, however one case have remained asymptomatic. the correct diagnosis was suggested in 12 patients; computed tomography demonstrated a more precise image of retained sponge. surgical removal of the gossypiboma was carried out in all patients, resolving its complications. post operative complications were observed in four cases, but all were discharged healthfully; no mortality was observed. conclusions: in our series, the initial operation during which the surgical sponge and gauze were left behind was gynecological. risk factor for gossypiboma is observed only in a few cases. early removal of gossypiboma is necessary to prevent morbidity and mortality related to its presence. mortality was not observed in this series. prevention is the best option. this is based in continuous training and strict adherence to regulations to reduce the incidence to a minimum, although human errors cannot be completely abolished.

Abstract: change in climate and water cycle will challenge water availability but it will also increase the exposure to unsafe water. floods, droughts, heavy storms, changes in rain pattern, increase of temperature and sea level, they all show an increasing trend worldwide and will affect biological, physical and chemical components of water through different paths thus enhancing the risk of waterborne diseases. this paper is intended, through reviewing the available literature, to highlight environmental changes and critical situations caused by floods, drought and warmer temperature that will lead to an increase of exposure to water related pathogens, chemical hazards and cyanotoxins. the final aim is provide knowledge-based elements for more focused adaptation measures.

Abstract: To estimate the value of a real estate through the capitalization of the incomes, the determination of the suitable cap rate is generally make with the analogical process. This is usually inferred by a price-earnings ratio of similar investments. The analogy concerns the risk and the duration of the investment. There is a wide range of methods to rationalize the indirect valuation of the cap rate. However, in all these methods the appraisal holds uncertainty. In this paper a methodology which removes uncertainty in the valuation of the cap rate is proposed. In this method the uncertainty is transformed in risk. The aim is achieved by the combination of the formal logic of the Ellwood’s model and the Real Options Analysis. Therefore, the algorithm defined has been implemented in a software for the real estate appraisal, described by an immediate and simply user interface.

Abstract:

The cement hydration delay is due to comb-polymers (PCP), used as dispersant agent during the preparation of the cement paste. In order to evaluate the role of the PCP structure on hydration, the comb-polymer is separated in two main parts: the backbone (PAA) and the dispersing chain. A linear polymer made up of PEO, Mw = 1000, with a carboxylic head suitable to link the inorganic surface, was synthesized to simulate the effect of the dispersing-side chain. The hydration delay of C-S-H formation induced by comb-polymer on CEM I and C3S phase was analyzed by conduction calorimetry and the morphology of the crystalline structure in growth by SEM, specially studying the relation between structure and hydration time. The results show that the hydration delay is mainly ascribable to the comb-shaped structure as a whole, where PEO chain, as from considerations on energy, might assume conformations able to modify the salt concentration near the cement surface. The different hydration rates are tentatively related to the crystal growth and the surface texture observed by SEM.

Modeling of strain-induced Pockels effect in Silicon

Abstract: We propose a theoretical model to describe the strain-induced linear electro-optic (Pockels) effect in centro-symmetric crystals. The general formulation is presented and the specific case of the strained silicon is investigated in detail because of its attractive properties for integrated optics. The outcome of this analysis is a linear relation between the second order susceptibility tensor and the strain gradient tensor, depending generically on fifteen coefficients. The proposed model greatly simplifies the description of the electro-optic effect in strained silicon waveguides, providing a powerful and effective tool for design and optimization of optical devices.
