Maier, Elizabeth;
Frontera norte , 2011,
Abstract: this article is based on the study on "evaluation of gender-equity knowledge, attitudes and strategies of high-level functionaries in baja california". the paper evaluated high-level, civil servants' familiarity with the gender paradigm, their attitudes of resistance or receptivity towards gender equity, and the degree of gender mainstreaming present in public policy in baja california. the hypothesis rests on the need for continuous, progressive, training in gender and gender politics for high-echelon functionaries, in order to effectively deconstruct the complex cultural web of gender inequity that still defines differential access to opportunities and economic, social, and political benefits in baja california.
Maier, Elizabeth;
Frontera norte , 2008,
Abstract: in this article i propose to initiate a revision of the contemporary cultural dispute for social significance between two societal models that have placed women's bodies, sexuality, relationships, and family in the centre of the discussion, both in the united states and mexico. in an initial look at the issue, i propose to: identify the historical context in which these agents in dispute emerged; describe their process of consolidation as social agents in both us and mexico; examine the logic that articulates their proposals, and the political advances that have resulted through a national-international synergy; and, finally, exemplify the dispute and the mechanics of their functioning through analysis of the recent process of legalization of abortion on july, 2007, at mexico city, where the borders of the collective imagination of both sides were clearly defined. in the article, i analyze the differences and tensions between these two societal proposals, in their campaign to achieve the privilege of cultural interpretation.

Maier, Elizabeth;
Región y sociedad , 2010,
Abstract: this article examines local examples from baja california within the framework of the contemporary dispute for cultural significance that positions women's bodies, sexuality, reproduction and family at the core of contention. focusing on the historical case of paulina and the recent process of constitutional reform that legalized the right to life from the moment of conception, the article identifies the contents of competing discourses, reviews the contexts in which they were produced, examines the process of consolidation of rival social actors, and looks at their respective strategies at certain points in time. by analyzing local issues, this text hopes to broaden our understating of the dynamics of a discursive dispute that is becoming one of the major ideological conflicts of the 21st century.
Maier, Elizabeth;
Región y sociedad , 2007,
Abstract: the objective of this article is to anchor the analysis of a research-action experience in education for the prevention of hiv-aids in indigenous immigrant communities in baja california, to a theoretical and phenomenological framework that organizes the multiple dimensions of this issue, and offers a deeper understanding of the implications of the pandemic for these communities, the significance of indigenous women's participation, and the results obtained, as well as the importance of a gender perspective and cultural orientation for its success. the concept of vulnerability is used to depict the extremely fragile living conditions of origin and receptive indigenous communities, the subaltern implications of indigenous women's traditional identity, and the risks of migration itself. this article interprets community health promotion in terms of the gendered culture of origin communities, the historical and subjective meanings of increasing indigenous migration, and subsequent attempts at social, cultural, and gender reorganization produced by migratory dislocation. based on this complex theoretical, conceptual, historical, phenomenological and relational jigsaw puzzle, the last part of the article focuses on the mechanics and contents of the project, and the results obtained by the community and the women promoters from the experience.
Mujeres indígenas, migración y ambiente
Elizabeth Maier
Biomaterials in skull base surgery
Maier, Wolfgang
GMS Current Topics in Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery , 2009,
Abstract: Reconstruction materials and techniques for the base of the skull have undergone rapid developments and differentiation in recent years. While mostly autotransplants, collagens or resorbable alloplastic materials are preferred for duraplasties, pronounced organ-specific differences can be observed in the reconstruction of hard tissues. The use of polymethylmethacryl bone cement, once wide-spread, has decreased greatly due to the release of toxic monomers. Bony autotransplants are still used primarily for smaller skull-base defects, intraoperatively formable titanium nets may be also used for larger fronto- or laterobasal reconstructions of bony defects. Defects in visible areas are increasingly closed with preformed titanium or ceramic implants, which are planned and fitted to the individual patient using preoperative CT imaging. At the skull base, this applies especially to reconstructions of the frontal sinus. For extensive reconstructions of the orbita, titanium nets and non-resorbable plastics have proven valuable; in closing smaller defects especially of the orbital floor, resorbable implants based on Polyglactin 901 are also used.
Formen und Probleme von f cherübergreifendem Unterricht an baden-württembergischen Hauptschulen Ways and Problems of an Integrated Curriculum in German Secondary Schools Formas y problemas de un currículum integrado en las Escuelas Secundarias alemanas

Forum : Qualitative Social Research , 2006,
URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs060130 The implementation of curriculum integration is one of the far-reaching goals of the last two curriculum reform programs in Baden-Württemberg (Germany), implemented in 1994 and 2004. The expectations of school reformers are high. There is a vast literature that offers suggestions and techniques for integrating different subject matters. Despite the considerable literature, reports of empirical research are very scarce. The aim of this study is to describe commonalities and problems encountered when integrating teaching units in the German "Hauptschule". Students of the educational university in Schw bisch Gmünd conducted 39 interviews with teachers and gathered qualitative data about 81 integrated teaching units. The transcribed texts were analysed with Qualitative Content Analysis. Main results: Integrated curricular units are frequently organized as project-based teaching or group instruction. Teachers favour subjects as fine arts, music or social studies for their interdisciplinary thematic units. Mathematical and scientific to
