Maia Beridze, Tamar Sanikidze, Roman Shakarishvili1, Nino Intskirveli, Natan M Bornstein
BMC Neurology , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2377-11-41
Abstract: Ninety five acute ischemic stroke patients were investigated. Ischemic region visualized at the twenty fourth hour by conventional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Stroke severity evaluated by National Institute Health Stroke Scale. One month outcome of disease was assessed by Barthel Index. Cerebrospinal fluid was taken at the sixth hour of stroke onset. CSF pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines were studied by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay. Nitric Oxide and Lipoperoxide radical were measured by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance. CSF Nitrate levels were detected using the Griess reagent. Statistics performed by SPSS-11.0.At the sixth hour of stroke onset, cerebrospinal fluid cytokine levels were elevated in patients against controls. Severe stroke patients had increased interleukin-6 content compared to less severe strokes (P < 0.05). Cerebrospinal fluid Electron Paramagnetic Resonance signal of nitric oxide was increased in patients against controls. Severe stroke group had an elevated Electron Paramagnetic Resonance signal of lipoperoxiradical compared to less severe stroke. Cerebrospinal fluid nitrate levels in less severe stroke patients were higher than those for severe stroke and control. Positive correlation was established between the initial interleukin-6 content and ischemic lesion size as well as with National Institute Health Stroke Scale score on the seventh day. Initial interleukin-6 and nitrate levels in cerebrospinal fluid found to be significant for functional outcome of stroke at one month.According to present study the cerebrospinal fluid contents of interleukin-6 and nitrates seem to be the most reliable prognostic factors in acute phase of ischemic stroke.Modern concepts of acute cerebral ischemia highlight the role of neurovascular units and emphasize the importance of integrative tissue responses that result from dynamic interactions of endothelial cells, vascular sooth muscles, matrix elements, astroglia, microglia and neurons. Maia, Suzana;
Cadernos Pagu , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332012000100011
Abstract: this article examines the discursive configurations that associate the body of top model gisele bündchen to the body of the brazilian nation, and analyses the ways through which these configurations define what means to be brazilian according to discourses that circulate in brazilian and transnational media. in order to do that, i use images of gisele to interrogate the racial formations in the two contexts and to examine how theses formations are being reconfigured due to recent changes in the demographic and political contexts in brazil and in the united states. following the studies of racial relations in the two countries, i adopt a framework developed by the studies that focus on the construction of whiteness.

O apoio domiciliário a pessoas infectadas pelo VIH em Fran?a e em Portugal
Maia,Marta;
Arquivos de Medicina , 2006,
Abstract: aids is a disease that exists for more than twenty years. with the arrival of tritherapies, this disease became chronic but still remains a very serious one, that many times is handicapping and its treatments are ?heavy? and the secondary effects hardly bearable. within this context social support is fundamental for the individuals that are infected. the care support at patients? homes is a very important element for those who live with aids. the associative mobilization towards aids is important but not always sufficient in portugal, as we tried to demonstrate comparing some aspects of state financial help and domiciliary care support between france and portugal.

Abstract: the treatment of hepatitis c consists of a bitherapy of pegylated interferon and ribavirin. this treatment causes numerous and strong side effects. in this context, i tried to evaluate the perception that the patient has of himself and of the others, the influence of the illness, of the treatment and the cure not only in his daily life but also in his identity as a patient. the investigation assembles on testimonies in internet discussion forums and interviews of patients found at these forums.
Representa??o política de atores cívicos entre a imediaticidade da experiência e discursos de justifica??o
Maia, Rousiley;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092012000100007
Abstract: this article investigates the legitimacy building process concerning the representation in the civil society. based on the recognition theory, the author defends the importance of the subjective experiences for a well-succeeded identification of different forms of injustice. firstly, the author contends that the subjective experience, although being regarded as a necessary and irreplaceable source of intelligibility of injustice, cannot become a reliable source of justification in the public sphere. secondly, the author investigates different forms of representation which become overlapped in the civil sphere and the need to articulate them with electoral representation and traditional dynamics of representative politics. finally, the author discusses some manner to institutionalize the representation coming from civil society participation, in order to produce democratic effects in the organization of social life.
Sedu??o e identidade nacional: dan?arinas eróticas brasileiras no Queens, Nova York
Maia, Suzana;
Revista Estudos Feministas , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-026X2009000300009
Abstract: this article examines the trajectory of brazilian women who work as erotic dancers in new york city's gentlemen's bars. it argues that processes of globalization and transnationalism are related not just with political-economic transformations, but also to significant shifts in the ways people relate to each other, use their bodies, and conceive and realize their desires. such transformations must also be understood in relation to a colonial and post-colonial regime, in which representations about their bodies gain intelligibility. most of the women who participated in my research are from the middle-classes, and in terms of race, they self-identify as "morenas". based on fieldwork conducted between years 2004-2005, i analyze how their social positioning and identity are translated from one context to another, and how new social hierarchies are constructed in a transnational context. taking as a focus of study blue diamond, a bar located in the borough of queens, this article investigates how these transnational reconfigurations are articulated through particular relationships among dancers and between dancers and clients
Altruísmo e educa??o: condi??o, consciência e dignidade
Maia,Carlos;
Revista Portuguesa de Educa??o , 2006,
Abstract: the educational act reveals a person?s altruistic structure and dynamism. individual as well as collective benefit relies on this act on behalf of both unfavoured and favoured people.there is no sense or reason to aiming at surpassing the limitations of the first without maximizing the potentialities of the last. but the effort towards enhancing maximum skills is bigger than the one oriented towards rousing minimum skills. not to pursue the objective of developing a person?s maximum skills is to deny altruism and to promote an attitude of anthropological, pedagogical and ethical indifference, masked it could be under tolerance.
