Carbon, energy and forest biomass: new opportunities and needs for forest management in Italy
Magnani F
Forest@ , 2005,
Abstract: Forest biomass provides a relevant fraction of world energy needs, not only in developing Countries. In Italy, several factors are presently contributing to a new interest for this resource, ranging from regulatory quotas for renewables to the increasing price of fossil fuel to the emergence of a European carbon stock exchange. This focus on renewable resources constitutes an important opportunity for the forest sector and for society by and large, but because of the potential dimensions of the emerging market it also requires new planning instruments, in order to avoid a sudden and widespread resumption of coppice management and a reduction of standing carbon stock in forest ecosystems, which would run contrary to the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol. An example of the future demand for biomasses in Central Italy is presented, based on the possible use of fuelwood in new coal-fired power plants by the 'co-firing' technology.
Il turismo della memoria e i luoghi dell’Unità d’Italia / Tourism, memory and the places of the unification of Italy
Magnani, Elisa
Storicamente , 2011,
Abstract: The Unification of Italy may be celebrated with modern forms of pilgrimage in the places where the Unification was built, places of the collective cultural heritage of our country, connected to the recovery of memory of this past event. In this paper we will analyse the existing literature on the issues of memory and tourism and on the role of tourism in shaping the collective memory and the national identity of a population and we will discuss how the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy are promoting the cultural heritage, both material and immaterial, it has produced.
Por caminos migrantes hacia la conciencia de una identidad abierta
Ilaria Magnani
Altre Modernità , 2009,
Abstract: The stifling Argentinean dictatorship has elicited a series of reflections on Argentineans's cultural roots and, at the same time, it has called into question the notion of Argentinean exceptionalism. All this has brought to re-think and to re-evaluate the migratory past of Argentina, especially in light of the economic policy of the country that lead to the 2001 default. The political and economic events have had their reflections on the literary production, in particular on memoirs and pseudo-memoirs. The object of my essay is the work of AntonioDal Masetto, mostly known for his novels about migration. In particular, I will focus on his most recent writing in which the condition of the migrant is no longer a personal and familial concern but it becomes a contemporary and universal paradigm. For the purpose of my essay, I will use the by-now classic theories of Edouard Glissant, Jacques Derrida and Loretta Baldassar about migration.

Proyectos identitarios en la construcción del Museo Nacional de la Inmigración de Buenos Aires
Ilaria Magnani
Altre Modernità , 2011,
Abstract: Visiting the National Immigration Museum is the occasion to think over the relation between a Country and its immigration history. Retrieving the memory of the transoceanic migration to Argentina which characterized the last decades, is a process based upon the complex interconnection between the individual level and the general one; and whereas immigration as a mass phenomenon turns into an individual experience, the personal recollection is the tool that allows us to reconstruct the past social project and also to give shape to the existing National identity. Thus the Museum acts as safeguard for the immigration memory and at the same time for the political institutional legitimisation and it represents the promise of a prosperous future like the last decades did.

Morality and Psychopathic Criminals. Ethicocentrism, Mental Incapacity, Free Will, and the Fear of Decriminalization
Lorenzo Magnani
Rivista Internazionale di Filosofia e Psicologia , 2012,
Abstract: Present-day legal judgments of psychopathic criminals strongly avoid the exploitation of “moral” considerations. Currently, the attribution of responsibility to criminals often takes advantage of the cognitive concept of mental incapacity so that, in these cases, the moral judgment about moral conducts of “psycho-pathological” criminals is potentially extinguished. I contend that the theories and methods that are currently used in western societies to discharge moral and legal responsibility are not clear in their epistemic structure and so partially unreliable. To support this conclusion I take advantage of my recent cognitive studies concerning the multiplicity of moral frameworks, the gene/cognitive niche co-evolution, and the concept of free will.
La moralidad distribuida y la tecnología. Cómo las cosas nos hacen morales,
Magnani, Lorenzo
Isegoría , 2006,
Abstract: In this paper, I contend that through technology people can simplify and solve moral tasks when they are in the presence of incomplete information and possess a diminished capacity to act morally. Many external things, usually inert from the moral point of view, can be transformed into what we will call moral mediators. Hence, not all of the moral tools are inside the head, many of them are shared and distributed in external objects and structures which function as ethical devices. Aiming at illustrating the intrigue of this ethical struggle between human beings and things, we will discuss the role of objects, structures, and technological artifacts by presenting them as moral carriers and mediators.
Colonial Subjects, Imperial Discourses: Rosario Ferré's The House on the Lagoon and Judith Ortiz Cofer's The Line of the Sun
Jessica Magnani
Centro Journal , 2009,
Abstract: This essay compares the works of two Puerto Rican writers as they (re)construct the nation and its colonial legacy. The author argues that colonization has produced ambivalent, sometimes damaged, notions of national identity, as presented in both Rosario Ferré s The House on the Lagoon and Judith Ortiz Cofer's The Line of the Sun. Both texts are haunted by a colonialism that the narrators (and the writers) would like to repress and/or re-write but which remains inextricable from national imaginings.
Images et passages à l’époque médiévale
Eliana Magnani
