Abstract: In a previous work, using an interspecific recombinant congenic mouse model, we reported a genomic region of 23 Mb on mouse chromosome 11 implicated in testis weight decrease and moderate teratozoospermia (~20–30%), a Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) called Ltw1. The objective of the present study is to identify the gene underlying this phenotype.

Abstract: Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is defined as the loss of three or more consecutive pregnancies during the first trimester of embryonic intrauterine development. This kind of human infertility is frequent among the general population since it affects 1 to 5% of women. In half of the cases the etiology remains unelucidated. In the present study, we used interspecific recombinant congenic mouse strains (IRCS) in the aim to identify genes responsible for embryonic lethality. Applying a cartographic approach using a genotype/phenotype association, we identified a minimal QTL region, of about 6 Mb on chromosome 1, responsible for a high rate of embryonic death (~30%). Genetic analysis suggests that the observed phenotype is linked to uterine dysfunction. Transcriptomic analysis of the uterine tissue revealed a preferential deregulation of genes of this region compared to the rest of the genome. Some genes from the QTL region are associated with VEGF signaling, mTOR signaling and ubiquitine/proteasome-protein degradation pathways. This work may contribute to elucidate the molecular basis of a multifactorial and complex human disorder as RSA.
Le corps du sultan ottoman The Body of the Ottoman Sultan
Nicolas Vatin
The sultan’s person is the keystone of the Ottoman Empire. Its very existence secures the world’s order. It is not surprising, then, that the Ottoman society never accepted the possibility of a break in the dynastic continuity, attaching a great importance to the physical presence of the monarch’s person. That’s why the living body of the sultan, if not exactly sacred, was nevertheless of a more than human nature, which superior value was more than symbolic and went beyond his own individual person.Consequently, when the sultan was dead or dethroned, he was nobody anymore and no special reverence was due to his physical person. On the contrary, while by dying he became in theory a Muslim as any other one, he had actually less rights than anybody else, precisely because he was an ancient monarch. His corpse could suffer degrading treatments dictated by political considerations: first of all, the rejection of any break in the dynastic continuity compelled more than once to keep secret the sultan’s death and to delay his burial for several weeks

Hyperparasitaemia during bouts of malaria in French Guiana
Carme Bernard,Demar Magalie
Malaria Journal , 2013, DOI: 10.1186/1475-2875-12-20
Abstract: Background High circulating parasite load is one of the WHO criteria for severe falciparum malaria. During a period of 11 years (2000–2010), the frequency of hyperparasitaemia (HP) (≥4% infected erythrocytes) during bouts of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium malariae in patients referred to Cayenne General Hospital (CGH) in French Guiana and the frequency of their admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) were evaluated. Methods A mean of 1,150 malaria cases were referred to the Parasitology Laboratory of CGH each year over the last decade. During this period, malaria diagnostic (microscopy) and parasitaemia evaluation have remained unchanged: determination of the parasitized erythrocytes percentage with asexual forms on thin blood smears for all cases of parasitaemia exceeding 0.1%. Patients admitted to the ICU can be counted by origin of the request for malaria testing. All the data collected retrospectively were anonymized in a standardized case report form and in database. Results Between 2000 and 2010, 12,254 bouts of malaria were confirmed at the Parasitology Laboratory of CHG: P. vivax: 56.2%, P. falciparum: 39.5%, co-infection with both species: 3.4%, P. malariae: 0.9%. HP was observed in 262 cases, at a frequency of 4.9% for P. falciparum and only 0.041% for P. vivax, with no recorded cases for P. malariae. The need for intensive care was correlated with P. falciparum parasite load: 12.3% of cases for parasitaemia of 4-9%, 21.2% for parasitaemia 10-19%, 50% for parasitaemia 20-29% and 77.8% for parasitaemia ≥30% (n=9). The patient with the highest parasitaemia (75% infected erythrocytes with asexual form) presented a major concomitant lupus flare-up treated with corticoids. He survived without obvious sequelae. Conclusions In French Guiana during bouts of malaria, HP was observed at a frequency of ~ 5% for P. falciparum and two orders of magnitude less frequent for P. vivax. HP is a severity criterion for falciparum malaria in this endemic area. However, two of the patients with HP ≥30% were not admitted to the ICU and sequel-free cure in malaria patients with 75% parasitaemia is, therefore, possible.
Diversité régionale de la prise en compte des zones humides et de leurs dynamiques
Magalie Franchomme,Claude Kergomard
The fact of the wetlands decline and spatial recession since 1970 are leading to draw up classifications, inventories and to start preservation actions. Indeed, small areas wetlands are generally kept apart from most studies and protection policies as well. Nevertheless, the local and regional planning gradually integrates them, because small areas wetlands have different hydrological and biological functions. The wetlands constitute a new development contribution, despite contradictions between their protection and their uses. Two examples in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Region (France) show the evolution of the practices and review different ways of integration of the wetlands in regional planning.
Unsupervised learning human's activities by overexpressed recognized non-speech sounds

Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: Human activity and environment produces sounds such as, at home, the noise produced by water, cough, or television. These sounds can be used to determine the activity in the environment. The objective is to monitor a person's activity or determine his environment using a single low cost microphone by sound analysis. The purpose is to adapt programs to the activity or environment or detect abnormal situations. Some patterns of over expressed repeatedly in the sequences of recognized sounds inter and intra environment allow to characterize activities such as the entrance of a person in the house, or a tv program watched. We first manually annotated 1500 sounds of daily life activity of old persons living at home recognized sounds. Then we inferred an ontology and enriched the database of annotation with a crowed sourced manual annotation of 7500 sounds to help with the annotation of the most frequent sounds. Using learning sound algorithms, we defined 50 types of the most frequent sounds. We used this set of recognizable sounds as a base to tag sounds and put tags on them. By using over expressed number of motifs of sequences of the tags, we were able to categorize using only a single low-cost microphone, complex activities of daily life of a persona at home as watching TV, entrance in the apartment of a person, or phone conversation including detecting unknown activities as repeated tasks performed by users.
Adaptive goodness-of-fit tests in a density model
Magalie Fromont,Béatrice Laurent
Mathematics , 2006, DOI: 10.1214/009053606000000119
Abstract: Given an i.i.d. sample drawn from a density $f$, we propose to test that $f$ equals some prescribed density $f_0$ or that $f$ belongs to some translation/scale family. We introduce a multiple testing procedure based on an estimation of the $\mathbb{L}_2$-distance between $f$ and $f_0$ or between $f$ and the parametric family that we consider. For each sample size $n$, our test has level of significance $\alpha$. In the case of simple hypotheses, we prove that our test is adaptive: it achieves the optimal rates of testing established by Ingster [J. Math. Sci. 99 (2000) 1110--1119] over various classes of smooth functions simultaneously. As for composite hypotheses, we obtain similar results up to a logarithmic factor. We carry out a simulation study to compare our procedures with the Kolmogorov--Smirnov tests, or with goodness-of-fit tests proposed by Bickel and Ritov [in Nonparametric Statistics and Related Topics (1992) 51--57] and by Kallenberg and Ledwina [Ann. Statist. 23 (1995) 1594--1608].
