Variáveis e desafios do processo decisório no contexto dos Comitês de Bacia Hidrográfica no Brasil
Magalhes Jr., Antonio;
Ambiente & Sociedade , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-753X2001000800003
Abstract: one sees a rapid process of rivers management modernization in brazil in the 90s - in legal and institutional terms. the approval of law 9,433/97 was one of the main reasons for the changes. it established the national system of hydrographic resources management based on decentralized and participative management principles. the hydrographic basin committees are one of the most important pieces of the new system. the effectiveness of their activities depends on the nature of the decision making process, specially its capacity of dealing with conjectural problems and local interests. this article aims to discuss the qualities and challenges of this process within the committees.

Chaves Jr, Nilson;Magalhes, Luciene de Tassis;Colleoni, Ramiro;Del Grande, José Carlos;
Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502007000500010
Abstract: purpose: to assess the initial healing after surgical stapling of the stomach using a linear cutting stapler and creating pneumoperitoneum (12-14 mmhg) for 60 minutes or 120 minutes, and compare it with the healing of a staple line not submitted to increased pressure. methods: a total of 30 dogs were divided into three groups of 10 animals each: group i (control group - surgical stapling), group ii (surgical stapling and increased intra-abdominal pressure for 60 minutes) and group iii (surgical stapling and increased intra-abdominal pressure for 120 minutes). all dogs were maintained under general anesthesia for two hours after surgical stapling. seven days after surgery, the area around the staple line was macroscopically and microscopically examined. results: the macroscopic examination of the samples (n = 30) did not show dehiscence, fistula or abscess. adhesions between the omentum and the staple line were observed in all animals of groups ii and iii (n = 20), which were significantly different from group i (p = 0.008*). the histopathological analysis showed normal healing up to day 7 in the control animals (n = 10). when these results were compared with those of groups ii and iii (n = 20), non-parametric tests revealed that there was a significant difference with regard to certain parameters of the early stages of healing, such as fibroblast migration (p = 0.011*), edema (p < 0.001*) and congestion (p = 0.011*). these alterations affected reepithelization (p < 0.001*), and consequently the late stages of healing. conclusions: each group showed different healing stages, and the healing process was delayed in the groups submitted to increased pressure, especially in the group submitted to increased pressure for longer time.
Mechanisms of virus resistance and antiviral activity of snake venoms
Rivero, JVR;de Castro, FOF;Stival, AS;Magalhes, MR;Carmo Filho, JR;Pfrimer, IAH;
Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-91992011000400005
Abstract: viruses depend on cell metabolism for their own propagation. the need to foster an intimate relationship with the host has resulted in the development of various strategies designed to help virus escape from the defense mechanisms present in the host. over millions of years, the unremitting battle between pathogens and their hosts has led to changes in evolution of the immune system. snake venoms are biological resources that have antiviral activity, hence substances of significant pharmacological value. the biodiversity in brazil with respect to snakes is one of the richest on the planet; nevertheless, studies on the antiviral activity of venom from brazilian snakes are scarce. the antiviral properties of snake venom appear as new promising therapeutic alternative against the defense mechanisms developed by viruses. in the current study, scientific papers published in recent years on the antiviral activity of venom from various species of snakes were reviewed. the objective of this review is to discuss the mechanisms of resistance developed by viruses and the components of snake venoms that present antiviral activity, particularly, enzymes, amino acids, peptides and proteins.

Ponte, Clarisse Mour?o Melo;Gurgel, Maria Helane Costa;Montenegro Jr., Renan Magalhes;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302009000800012
Abstract: gonadotrophic axis dysfunction is commonly observed in hiv-infected patients. the pathogenesis is multifactorial and related to duration of hiv infection, direct cytopathic effects of viruses, use of drugs, opportunistic infections, malignancies, and malnutrition, among other factors. in men, reduced levels of testosterone is associated with loss of muscle mass and strength, decreased bone mineral density, lipodystrophy, depression, asthenia, fatigue and sexual dysfunction. in hiv-infected patients with hypogonadism, numerous studies have shown the beneficial effects of testosterone replacement on the metabolic profile and distribution of body fat, with increased body mass weight, and promote better quality of life, reduce the bone mass loss and the rates of depression. thus, this review aimed to present a brief update of epidemiologic data, pathophysiology aspects and treatment strategies for the major abnormalities of male gonadotrophic axis associated with hiv infection and its treatment.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27301999000500005
Abstract: we followed 62 post-menopausal previously symptomatic women monthly during 3 months after percutaneous (0.75 to 3.0 mg/d) 17-beta estradiol percutaneous gel. those with an intact uterus also received cyclic or continuous natural micronized progesterone, 100-200 mg/d or cyclic medroxyprogesterone acetate, 5 mg/d. during treatment all patients presenting with hot flashes or craurosis had oestradiol levels <53 pg/ml; all those with breast tenderness, oedema or leg weight had values >193 pg/ml. symptoms were highly correlated to oestradiol (p=0,0001) and fsh levels (p=0,001) but not to lh. assymptomatic patients showed variable hormonal levels, with superposition of values in relation to clinically hypo and hyperestrogenic groups. this points to the need of laboratory proof of adequate estrogen supplementation in assymptomatic patients during ert. in a 22 patient subgroup, waist-hip ratio (whr) and body mass index (bmi) monthly variation were also analyzed and correlated with clinical and laboratory status. whr fell significantly as early as in the first month (p=0,0008); mean values fluctuated in the second month and stabilized in the third. the variation could not predict the patient's clinical status. bmi did not change significantly during the period.

Abstract: purpose: despite the advances in microvascular free tissue transfer for intraoral reconstruction, this surgery is not recommended for all patients. in specific cases, the pedicled temporoparietal galeal flap may be an option for reconstructive procedures in the head and neck regions. the objective of this paper is to present the anatomical aspects of a galeal flap based on the superficial temporal vessels and to test its potential for reconstructing diverse sites of the oral cavity and pharynx. methods: we performed 40 dissections on 34 fresh adult cadavers. the flap vascular anatomy was studied by injecting latex into the superficial temporal vessels. a standardized square-shape flap measuring 10 x 10 cm2, pedicled on the superficial temporal vessels, was raised. oral cavity and oropharynx reconstruction simulations were performed after flap transposition into the mouth by passing it under the zygomatic arch. hypopharyngeal reconstruction was tested by transposing the flap to the neck under the facial nerve. results: after latex injection, a rich vascular network over the temporoparietal galea was observed directly from the superficial temporal artery, and a well-vascularized flap based on this vessel was raised. in the reconstruction simulations, the flap was shown to be suitable for the coverage of hypothetical defects in most oral cavity and pharyngeal sites, mainly the retromolar trigone, tonsil area, and buccal mucosa. conclusions: a galeal flap based on the superficial temporal vessels presents favorable anatomical characteristics for oral cavity and pharyngeal reconstruction.
