Brazilian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-82502012000100005
Abstract: the objective of this study was to investigate whether differences in diet and in single-nucleotide polymorphisms (snps) found in paraoxonase-1 (pon-1), 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme a reductase (hmgcr), cholesterol ester transfer protein (cetp) and apolipoprotein e (apoe) genes, are associated with oxidative stress biomarkers and consequently with susceptibility of low-density cholesterol (ldl) to oxidation. a multivariate approach was applied to a group of 55 patients according to three biomarkers: plasma antioxidant activity, malondialdehyde and oxidized ldl (oxldl) concentrations. individuals classified in cluster iii showed the worst prognoses in terms of antioxidant activity and oxidative status. individuals classified in cluster i presented the lowest oxidative status, while individuals grouped in cluster ii presented the highest levels of antioxidant activity. no difference in nutrient intake was observed among the clusters. significantly higher γ- and δ-tocopherol concentrations were observed in those individuals with the highest levels of antioxidant activity. no single linear regression was statistically significant, suggesting that mutant alleles of the snps selected did not contribute to the differences observed in oxidative stress response. although not statistically significant, the p value of the apo e coefficient for oxldl response was 0.096, indicating that patients who carry the tt allele of the apo e gene tend to present lower plasma oxldl concentrations. therefore, the differences in oxidative stress levels observed in this study could not be attributed to diet or to the variant alleles of pon-1, cetp, hmgcr or apo e. this data supports the influence of γ-tocopherol and δ-tocopherol on antioxidant activity, and highlights the need for further studies investigating apo e alleles and ldl oxidation.

Engenharia Sanitaria e Ambiental , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-41522011000200011
Abstract: the objective of this paper was to analyze the air quality in uberlandia, in minas gerais, by simple logistic regression models. the pm10 sampler was used to obtain data of the pollution that considers only concentration of suspended particles smaller than 10 μm. the temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, wind speed, day of the week and seasons of year were used as predictions variables in this study. the day of week and seasons of year were used as binary system and as predictions variables too. the results showed that there is a significant relation among the temporal and climatic variables with the air quality of uberlandia. the simple logistic models show that precipitation, humidity, summer, spring, saturday, and sunday significantly contribute to achieve good air quality, while the winter and the increasing flow of vehicles tend to worsen the air quality.

Abstract: background: the expansion of the use of immunohistochemistry (ihc) in numerous laboratories extends the power of diagnostic resolution, but may impart heterogeneity in procedures and results. following recent international proposals, participants of the club of ihc of the brazilian society of pathology developed actions of quality control applying routine protocols for detection of some of the most relevant antigens as quality probes. objectives: ten laboratories participated on the present study on keratins and estrogen receptors. material and method: on control-slides sent from each laboratory, each participant performed ihc reaction according to his daily practice, returning the slides with the filled procedure form. the evaluation of the intensity of the specific reaction and back-ground was performed individually during data show projection in a meeting of the club of ihc, yielding a final score of performance. discussion and conclusion: the methodology adopted was found useful to ascribe the performance to the heterogeneous systems of antigenic retrieval and amplification, leading to the identification of moderate variation in intensity of immunoreaction and in back-ground, but not compromising the antigen detection in any of these laboratories. other studies must approach interpretative questions, including semi-quantitation and cut-offs.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2004000400031
Abstract: hallervorden-spatz syndrome is a neurodegenerative disease, autosomic recessive with two clinical features: early and late onset. psychiatric, pyramidal and extrapyramidal signs are present in the late subtype. we report the case of a 41-old woman with extrapyramidal signs. magnetic resonance imaging (mri) showed the eye-of-the-tiger sign in the medial globus pallidus. this is due to a gliosis (increased signal) and accumulation of surrounding iron (decreased signal intensity) in long tr sequences. there is a strong relationship between mri findings and the gene mutation responsable for this disease. it makes the mri sensible for diagnosing this syndrome.

Mana , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132005000200006
Abstract: in the second half of 2000, i accompanied the final phase of a land occupation campaign in rio de janeiro state. organized by the rio de janeiro landless workers movement (mst/rj), this campaign involved a series of preparatory meetings, called mass front meetings. starting with a description and analysis of some of these meetings, i examine how the campaign process unfolded. focusing on the viewpoint of the organizers, i present the adopted strategies and discuss their limitations, possibilities and contradictions. from a wider viewpoint, the text looks to contribute to the current debate concerning the formation of social movements in brazil. to this end, i point out the limitations of two kinds of approach: those which claim social movements form more or less spontaneously, and those which perceive these processes as new forms of reproducing old models of the boss-employee relationship.
