Phenolic content, antioxidant and antifungal activities of acetonic, ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts of Hypericum perforatum L.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate antifungal and antioxidant activities of Hypericum perforatum L. extracts against the growth of certain fungi. The ethanolic, acetonic and petroleum ether extracts of the plant were evaluated for phenols, flavonoids and non-flavonoids. The highest amounts of phenols (17.6 mg EPC/g dry extract) and flavonoids (16.85 mg EPC/g dry extract) were found in the acetonic extract. The highest inhibitory effect on the growth of Penicillium canescens, Fusarium oxysporum, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus glaucus and Phialophora fastigiata by the disk diffusion method was exhibited by the ethanolic extract at the concentration of 25 mg/disk. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the ethanolic and petroleum ether extracts was 20 mg/mL. The acetonic extract did not affect the growth of the tested fungi. Antioxidant activity was assessed by determining 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of Hypericum perforatum L. possesses antioxidant activity. The IC50 values, defined as the concentration of the test sample leading to 50% reduction of the free radical concentration, determined for each measurement were <7.8125, 105.9, 5.99 and 12.77 μg/ml for the ethanolic extract, the acetonic extract, ascorbic acid and BHT, respectively, for DPPH free radical scavenging activity.
Antioxidant activity of ultrasonic extracts of leek Allium porrum L.

Abstract: This study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant activity and efficacy of the ethanolic extract of the ultrasonic extracts of leek Allium porrum L. Ethanolic (50%; v/v) extracts of edible leek parts (stem and leaf) were prepared by ultrasound-assisted extraction, which was followed by evaluation of total phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. Total phenols were determined using the modified Folin-Ciocalteu method. Antioxidant activity was assessed by scavenging the stable free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The results of antioxidant activity were compared with control antioxidants: vitamin C and BHT. The higher content of phenols (69.46 mg GAE/g dry extract) and flavonoids (33.53 mg CE/g dry extract) was found in the ethanolic extract of leek stem. The measured values of IC50 were 98.90 g/ml and 61.05 g/ml for the ethanolic extract of leek leaf and stem, respectively.
Phytochemical screening and biological activity of extracts of plant species Halacsya sendtneri (Boiss.) D rfl.

Abstract: This study is aimed at examining total polyphenol, flavonoid, gallotannin and condensed tannins content in acetone, chloroform, ethyl acetate and petroleum ether extracts of Halacsya sendtneri (Boiss.) D rfl., their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, as well as identifying and quantifying the phenolic components. The antioxidant activity is consistent with the results of total quantity of phenolic compound. The results showed that the acetone extract of plant species Halascya sendtneri (Boiss.) D rfl. possessed the highest antioxidant activity. IC50 values were determined: 9.45±1.55 μg/mL for DPPH free radical scavenging activity, 13.46±1.68 μg/mL for inhibitory activity against lipid peroxidation, 59.11±0.83 μg/mL for hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and 27.91±0.88 μg/mL for ferrous ion chelating ability. The antimicrobial activity was tested using broth dilution procedure for determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The MICs were determined for 8 selected indicator strains. All of the extracts showed strong to moderate strong antimicrobial activity. The phenolic composition of Halacsya sendtneri extracts was determined by the HPLC method. The dominant phenolic compound in acetone, chloroform and ethyl acetate extract is rosmarinic acid. Ethyl acetate extract was also abundant in p-hydroxybenzoic acid and ferulic acid. The main compounds in petrol ether extract were chlorogenic acid and quercetin.
HPLC analysis, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Daphne cneorum L.

Abstract: The present study describes in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the methanol extracts which were obtained from the leaves and twigs of the plant Daphne cneorum L. The antimicrobial activity of these extracts was tested against human pathogenic microorganisms using a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. Total phenolics and flavonoids, as well as the antioxidant activity of the extracts were determined. The two tested extracts showed good antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The results of a high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method showed that 7,8-dihydroxycoumarin is one of the most abundant secondary metabolite in the tested extracts. The results of this study clearly indicated that the extracts of D. cneorum could be used as a potential source of natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.
Examinations of certain chemical characteristics of fermented dry sausage quality parameters

Abstract: On the grounds of data available from literature, we observed a high degree of variations in the values of numerous physical-chemical quality parameters of fermented sausages, so that we set as the objective of our investigations to carry out comprehensive examinations of selected chemical quality parameters (total protein content, relative protein content of connective tissue, and humidity in ten different products that belong to the group of fermented dry sausages). The other objective was to compare the values obtained in our investigations with the reference values envisaged under the Regulations on quality and other requirements for meat products (SCG Official Gazette, No. 33/2004) and to determine the percent of products that are found incompatible and the reasons for that. We used two standard reference chemical methods – the determination of nitrogen and moisture contents (SRPS ISO 937:1992 and SRPS ISO 1442:1998), as well as a modification of method M050 for the determination of hydroxyproline content. We can conclude on the grounds of the results of our investigations that out of the representative number of examined samples (n = 156), originating from 10 different products from the group of fermented dry sausages, 51 samples (32.7%) did not meet the requirements prescribed under the Regulations on quality and other requirements for meat products. Among the rejected samples, the reason for the incompatibility of 40 samples (25.6%) was a a higher level of RPCCT, and 18 samples (11.5%) had a higher moisture content than permitted. None of the total number of examined samples had a content of total proteins lower than the one prescribed under Regulations.
EXAMINATION OF THE CERTAIN CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOILED SAUSAGES PRODUCED IN SERBIA

Abstract: The objectives of our study were to examine certain chemical quality parameters in samples of various subgroups of boiled sausages and compare obtained values with reference values (Rule book on the quality of minced meat, semi-finished meat and meat products, Official Gazette of RS, no. 31/2012). We used two reference chemical methods: determination of nitrogen and phosphorus content (SRPS ISO 937:1992, SRPS ISO 13730:1999). For determination of hydroxyproline we used M 050 “in house” modified method. We concluded that the total number of tested samples of Fine grounded boiled sausages (n=170), 47 (27.65%) does not match the requirements for the quality provided the above mentioned Rule book, of which 21 samples because lower total protein content (TP) and 33 samples because higher relative protein content of connective tissue (RPC). The most common chemical quality failure of examined Coarsely grounded boiled sausages (n=94) is a higher percent of RPC than allowed (18 - 25 %). We consider in samples of same subgroup lower content of TP in 8 samples (11.11 %). From a total of 8 samples tested Boiled sausages with meat peaces ( unkarica), all tested samples revealed lower content of TP than allowed (100 %) and 2 samples (25 %) higher relative protein content of connective tissue (RPC). The most common deficiency that reduces the chemical quality of the boiled sausages is higher level of RPC, demonstrated in 53 (19.48 %) of the total (n=272) samples tested. Something minor drawback is the lower percent of TP determined in 37 samples (13.60 %). Total P2O5 content was compatibile with the values permitted by the Rule book in all of 272 examined samples, indicating a strict adherence to regulations when using phosphate as one of the technologically most important additives in the production of boiled sausages.
Morphological parameters of prostatic adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Introduction. Prostatic carcinoma is one of the most common malignancies in men and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths, after lung cancer. However, many of these tumors are latent, of no biologic significance, and are recognized only as an incidental finding at autopsy. Prostatic carcinoma: histologic features. Prostatic carcinomas have multiple histologic patterns, which can easily be confused with benign lesions. The following histologic changes are associated with prostatic carcinomas: prostatic acini are close to one another and present with linear infiltrates in the fibromuscular tissue; cells lining the acini often consist of a single layer, and the basal cell layer is absent; prominent large eosinophilic nucleoli are usually present in malignant cells; nuclear hyperchromatism is rare and it depends on the quality of the tissue fixation; perineural invasion is often observed. Today, the Gleason grading system is the most commonly used (Gleason score). Immunohistochemistry is widely used in pathology and clinical diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma, metastases of prostatic origin in staging malignant tumors and in the prognosis.
The effect of the accelerated aging on the mechanical properties of the PMMA denture base materials modified with itaconates

Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of accelerated ageing on the tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness and Charpy impact strength in commercial PMMA denture base material modified with di-methyl itaconate (DMI) and di-n-butyl itaconate (DBI). The samples were prepared by modifying commercial formulation by addition of itaconates in the amounts of 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10% by weight. After polymerization samples were characterized by FT-IR and DSC analysis while residual monomer content was determined by HPLC-UV. Accelerated ageing was performed at 70°C in water for periods of 7, 15 and 30 days. Tensile measurements were performed using Instron testing machine while the hardness of the polymerized samples was measured by Shore D method. The addition of itaconate significantly reduces the residual MMA. Even at the small amounts of added itaconates (2.5%) the residual MMA content was reduced by 50%. The increase of itaconate content in the system leads to the decrease of residual MMA. It has been found that the addition of di-n-alkyl itaconates decreases the tensile strength, hardness and Charpy impact strength and increases elongation at break. Samples modified with DMI had higher values of tensile strength, hardness and Charpy impact strength compared to the ones modified with DBI. This is explained by the fact that DBI has longer side chain compared to DMI. After accelerated ageing during a 30 days period the tensile strength decreased for all the investigated samples. The addition of DMI had no effect on the material ageing and the values for the tensile strength of all of the investigated samples decreased around 20%, while for the samples modified with DBI, the increase of the amount of DBI in the polymerized material leads to the higher decrease of the tensile strength after the complete accelerated ageing period od 30 days, aulthough after the first seven days of the accelerated ageing the values of hardness have increased for all of the investigated samples. Such behavior is explained as the result of the polymer chain relaxation. The values of Charpy impact strength decreased after accelerated ageing. The amount of added DMI have no affect on the decrease of Charpy impact strength after accelerated ageing, the decrease was similar as for pure PMMA. The decrease of Charpy impact strength increased as the amount of added DBI increases.
Von Meyenburg complex associated with adult polycystic liver disease

Abstract: Introduction. The von Meyenburg complex (bile duct hamartoma) is a rare developmental disorder, manifested by multiple bile ducts. The polycystic liver disease is a rare congenital anomaly which may remain undiscovered until adult life, occurring more frequently in women. It is mostly asymptomatic, but sometimes surgical intervention is necessary. In the majority of cases, it is combined with cysts in the kidney and, rarely, in other organs as well. The cysts may vary in diameter from I mm to 20 cm, or even more. Case report A 55-year-old woman underwent surgery based on clinical diagnosis: suspected Echinococcus liver cyst. Liver biopsy was performed, and a parenchymal tissue of 6.5x4x3 cm, with a cyst with a diameter of 2.5 cm, was resected. Within the cyst lumen there was a necrotic, mushy, yellow contents. Microscopically examined, it showed plenty of cholesterol crystals. The wall of the cyst consisted of hypocellular connective tissue. In the surrounding liver parenchyma, there were cystical formations of the same structure, measuring 1-2 mm. Also, there were some multiple bile duct hamartomas. The ducts were encircled by a delicate connective tissue. Discussion and conclusion These changes correspond to von Meyenburg complex, i.e. biliary microhamartoma combined with adult polycystic disease. In our case, in the wall of the cyst there were numerous cholesterol crystals, pointing to its retention character and, probably, to the mechanism of its origin. After degeneration of biliary epithelium, the cyst wall grew very thick, due to proliferation of the connective tissue evoked by the aggressive chemical contents of the bile. Frequent development of cholangiocarcinoma within the cyst wall also points to long-term chemical irritation. .
The influence of extracellular matrix composition on the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis

Abstract: The modern concept of the development of atherosclerosis implies that the underlying pathogenesis of this disease is vascular remodeling as a response of the vessel wall to hypertension associated with hyperlipidemia and subsequent inflammation. However, even though this disease has been investigated for decades, both from a basic and clinical research aspect, there are still many doubts as to what the initial phase of the disease is. In contemporary literature there are an increasing number of papers that stress the importance of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the blood vessels connective tissue, particularly proteoglycans, in the formation of early atherosclerotic lesions of human coronary arteries.
