Castro, Maíra Fonseca Moreira;Lima, Hernani Mota de;Fl?res, José Cruz do Carmo;
Rem: Revista Escola de Minas , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0370-44672011000200012
Abstract: despite closure regulations being recent in brazil, many mining companies are attempting to adopt best practice and are facing the challenge of closing their mines properly instead of simply complying with current legislation or abandoning the mine site. this paper summarizes mine closure according to both the brazilian legislation and the "delibera??o normativa" copam no 127, that establishes the directives and procedures for environmental assessment at the mine closure stage. even with the lack of laws and regulations addressing mine closure, the brazilian mining industry today is at the forefront of environmental impact minimisation techniques. some case studies in minas gerais state, two of them located in the iron quadrangle, provide excellent evidence of the industry's rehabilitation expertise. this paper presents an overview of mine closure legislation in brazil and in the state of minas gerais and gives some examples of mine closure programmes in effect. it is intended to highlight the changes on mine closure requirements as well as the best practices on mine closure in the state.

Archivos Espa?oles de Urología (Ed. impresa) , 2007, DOI: 10.4321/S0004-06142007000500015
Abstract: objective: to present and analyze one case of sacral agenesis with distal lumbar vertebral dysraphism, and to highlight the most relevant elements found in a bibliographic search. methods: we describe the clinical characteristics of an adult patient with sacral agenesis, the diagnostic-therapeutic urological management and her outcome over four years of follow-up. a bibliographic search was also performed including review of all articles published over the last 16 years; we briefly include the most relevant elements. conclusions: sacral agenesis, as a local regional expression of "caudal regression syndrome" almost invariably produces functional involvement of the bladder and recurrent urinary tract infection, although the evolution may be benign like present case. this does not exempt from the unavoidable need of proper initial morphological-functional diagnosis, periodic follow-up and treatment.

Formación universitaria , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-50062011000400005
Abstract: this study presents and analyzes the experiences of students in the development of an integrated seminar by a methodology called problem based learning (pbl). this experience is carried out by nursing students of the faculty of health sciences at the university of almeria (spain). the study was based on grounded theory which uses the inductive method for discovering theories, concepts and hypotheses starting directly from the data. the integration of theory and practice, collaborative learning and the relevance of the tutors are the most valued, but divergent views also arise about its utility in the acquisition of certain competences. the experience is very positive but a deeper planning is required before the implementation of new teaching methodologies and assessment such as pbl.

Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46652006000400008
Abstract: the diagnosis of american cutaneous leishmaniasis (acl) is frequently based on clinical and epidemiological data associated with the results of laboratory tests. some laboratory methods are currently being applied for the diagnosis of acl, among them the indirect immunofluorescence reaction (iifr), the montenegro skin test (mst), histopathological examination, and the polymerase chain reaction (pcr). the performance of these methods varies in a considerable proportion of patients. after the standardization of an immunoenzymatic test (elisa) for the detection of igg in the serum of patients with acl using a crude leishmania braziliensis antigen, the results obtained were compared to those of other tests routinely used for the diagnosis. the tests revealed the following sensitivity, when analyzed separately: 85% for elisa igg, 81% for pcr, 64.4% for mst, 58.1% for iifr, and 34% for the presence of parasites in the biopsy. elisa was positive in 75% of patients with acl presenting a negative mst, in 84.8% of acl patients with negative skin or mucous biopsies for the presence of the parasite, and in 100% of cases with a negative pcr. thus, elisa presented a higher sensitivity than the other tests and was useful as a complementary method for the diagnosis of acl.

Actas Urológicas Espa?olas , 2009, DOI: 10.4321/S0210-48062009000500002
Abstract: incidence of renal carcinoma, one of the most fatal solid neoplasms, has steadily increased in western society. moreover, these tumors are being increasingly detected in their early stages. as with most cancers, the underlying causes of the disease remain unknown. however, understanding of pathogenesis of this tumor is rapidly advancing, and will allow for new treatments for advanced disease. understanding of the influence of easily avoidable risk factors may allow for prevention of thousands of deaths caused by renal cancer.

Archivos Espa?oles de Urología (Ed. impresa) , 2008, DOI: 10.4321/S0004-06142008000100007
Abstract: objectives: after the description and standardization of the technique of ureteroscopy in 1979, several methods to obtain a nontraumatic, simple, efficient and fast ureteral acce-ss have been developed. the hydraulic expansion of the ureter was possible in 1986, with the development of ureteromat. we evaluate the effectiveness of hydraulic ureteral expansion (ureteromat) for ureteral access and the later endos-copic procedures. method: the last 100 ureteroscopy carried out from february to october 2006 were evaluated. we used a semi-rigid 9.8 fr. ureteroscope and hydraulic expansion (ureteromat) was performed in the same way in all procedures since 1986. results: of the total of cases, 92 were indicated for lithiasic pathology, 7 were exploratory and 1 for ureteral stricture. in 94 patients the procedure was carried out with hydraulic expansion alone, in 2 cases we used a balloon catheter , in 3 patients expansion of the mea-tus was done with forceps and 1 procedure was not possible due to an ureteral stop. conclusion: the ureteromat pump guarantees an excellent hydraulic expansion of the ureteral meatus and the passage of the intramural ureter. the visibility is very good at any moment of the procedure, making ureteroscopy a simple, effective, non traumatic and fast method.

Physics , 2011,
Abstract: In this paper we develop a new statistical model for the irradiance fluctuations of an unbounded optical wavefront (plane and spherical waves) propagating through a turbulent medium under all irradiance fluctuation conditions in homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. The major advantage of the model is that leads to closed-form and mathematically-tractable expressions for the fundamental channel statistics of an unbounded optical wavefront under all turbulent regimes. Furthermore, it unifies most of the proposed statistical models for the irradiance fluctuations derived in the bibliography providing, in addition, an excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract: the aim of this work was to produce hydroxyapatite (ha) granules containing 0, 0.5, 1 and 5 mol. (%) of strontium (sr), evaluate the physico-chemical properties and also the cytotoxicity by three different parameters of cell viability (iso 10993-5, 10993-12). the physico-chemical characterization was carried out by using x-ray diffraction (xrd), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ftir) and x-ray fluorescence (xrf). the xrd profile presented the main peaks of ha (jcpds 860740) and the absorption bands of ha were identified by ftir. the xrf results showed that the strontium concentration was close to the theoretical value. regarding the cytotoxicity assays, the incorporation of strontium up to 5 mol. (%) to the ha did not affected dehydrogenase activity (xtt, 2,3-bis[2-methyloxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl]-2h-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide), membrane integrity (neutral red uptake) or dna contend (incorporation of crystal violet), in relation to ha alone. in conclusion, hydroxyapatite containing from 0.5 to 5 mol. (%) of sr was successfully produced and presented no cytotoxicity.
