Abstract: objective: to estimate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glycemia in an adult population living in madrid (spain). methods: in this cross-sectional, population-based survey, we studied 1,344 adults aged 31-70 years, randomly selected from the population living in 14 primary care districts of the madrid region. all participants underwent a clinical evaluation that included a clinical interview, physical examination and fasting blood analysis (glycemia, cholesterol and triglyceride levels). the participants were considered to be diabetic if they had been previously diagnosed with diabetes by their general physician or had a fasting glycemia > 126mg/dl without a previous diabetes diagnosis. impaired fasting glycemia was defined as fasting glycemia between 100mg/dl and 125mg/dl in non-diabetic participants. results: the sex- and age-adjusted prevalence figures for diabetes and impaired fasting glucose were 6.6% (95% ci: 5.9-8.7) and 14.1% (95% ci: 12.1-15.8), respectively. a substantial proportion of diabetic patients [17.2% (95% ci: 10.9-23.5)] had not been previously diagnosed. the variables independently associated with diabetes were age, male gender, abdominal obesity and hypertension. conclusions: our prevalence figure for diabetes is similar to those reported in other spanish regions. the high frequency of impaired fasting glucose is worrisome, particularly when combined with obesity, as this association confers a high risk for developing diabetes mellitus.

Legal genres in English and Spanish: some attempts of analysis
Ma ángeles Orts Llopis
Ibérica , 2009,
Abstract: Understanding the differences and subtleties between the legal communication of the English-speaking world, and the Continental law countries –and, more specifically, Spain- has become a necessary practice in the global context. For the most part, it involves unravelling the differences and concomitances between the array of legal genres produced by the professionals of the specialist communities within these two traditions (i.e., Common Law and Continental Law). This paper attempts an analysis in layers –generic or pragmatic, textual or cognitive, and formal or superficial– of two types of genre within the domain of public and private law, namely delegated legislation and tenancy agreements or leases, the study of which has been seldom attempted, despite the customary presence of these instruments in the legal routine. The result of such analysis will, hopefully, cast some light on the way these communities interact within themselves and with the rest of the world, providing new clues to tackle the application of those genres and making it possible to draw new conclusions about the way in which linguistic interaction takes place in the context of these specialist communities in English and Spanish.

De la anécdota al relato: la petite maison en la narrativa libertina
Ma ángeles Lence Guilabert
?édille : Revista de Estudios Franceses , 2007,
Abstract: After the death of Louis XIV the pe-tite maison developed into a space dedicated to love and intimacy. Built in secluded spots, the petites maisons served as secret meeting places for lovers as well as for gas-tronomic and sensual gatherings arranged by certain libertines such as the duke of Richelieu. This licentious atmosphere soon became a focal point of gossip and stories welcome by the writers of the time and used in their libertine narrative. A represen-tative example of this narrative is ap-proached in this article.

Between 1934 and 1935, Spanish poets Manuel Altolaguirre and Concha Méndez published in London a review called 1616, with the aim of compiling the best English and Spanish poetry in ten stunning issues. Although 1616 bore the original subtitle “saw the death of W. S. & M. C.”, which referred to the year in which William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes died, the writers were not included in any of the issues; however, contemporary authors such as Jorge de Montemayor, Sir Philip Sidney, Garcilaso de la Vega, William Drummond of Hawthornden and Lope de Vega can be found among its pages. This article focuses on Garcilaso’s sonnets and the reasons for choosing Drummond’s versions for the second issue of 1616, taking as a starting point Altolaguirre’s correspondence, his biography of Garcilaso (1933), and the lectures he gave in Britain.
