Transformation Behavior of Ti50-x/2Ni50-x/2Cux alloys

Abstract: Phase transformation behavior of Ti50-x/2Ni50-x/2Cux (x=2, 5, 15) alloys was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that Ti50-x/2Ni50-x/2Cux alloys undergo a two-stage martensitic transformation on cooling and transform reversely in one stage on heating when treated at 823K for 5 hours. Heat treatment has no effect on the transformation behavior of Ti49Ni49Cu2 alloy but does influence that of Ti47.5Ni47.5Cu5 alloy and Ti42.5Ni42.5Cu15 alloy. Effect of heat treatment is related with precipitation of CuNiTi phase. The maximum recoverable elongation of Ti49Ni49Cu2 wire is about 6%.

Methods: White blood cell lysates were prepared and used as a source of the enzyme. Two tubes were used for each assay, the second as a blank. In each, N-(NBD-Aminolauroyl)sphingomyelin dissolved in chloroform-methanol (2:1) was added and the organic solvent was removed by nitrogen gas. Acetate buffer, 1% Triton X100 solution, and sonicated protein (the reaction tube only) were added to the residue. The mixture in each was then incubated at 37°C for 2 hours, which was followed by the addition of buffer, Dole solvent, heptane, and sodium chloride solution. The sonicated protein was added to the blank tube and NBD-ceramide was extracted by vortex for 5 minutes and brief centrifugation at 3000 rpm. The intensity of fluorescence of the upper phase was determined in a fluorometer at an excitation wavelength of 465 nm and emission wavelength at 530 nm. Results: In 20 normal patients, the range of enzyme activity was 305–1008 pmol with a mean of 570 pmol. In a proven case of Niemann–Pick disease type A by molecular gene analysis, enzyme activity was undetectable. Conclusion: The modified method is convenient in a biomedical genetics laboratory where a request for sphingomyelinase is very infrequent.
Doxazosin versus Finasteride for the Treatment of Large Symptomatizing Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A Questionnaire and Urodynamic-Based Study

Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of both Finasteride and Doxazosin in the treatment of moderately symptomatizing large-sized benign prostatic hyperplasia and to correlate symptomatic changes with alterations in urodynamic values using the OCO values (Sch fer nomogram). Patients and Methods: Fifty male patients with moderately symptomatizing BPH (> 40 cc) as assessed by ultrasound, were randomized to receive either Finasteride (5 mg/day)or Doxazosin (1-4 mg/ day) for 12 months. Results: Both Finasteride and Doxazosin significantly improved the urinary flow rates. Pressure-flow studies confirmed that both Doxazosin and Finasteride were effective in decreasing the opening detrusor pressure, the detrusor pressure at maximum flow (PdetQmax) and the detrusor pressure at least flow (Pdet least). When applying the Sch fer nomogram, the OCO values were found to have improved in both treatment groups. There was, however, a significant difference between both groups with respect to the OCO values denoting a better improvement of the degree of obstruction in patients treated with Finasteride. Conclusion: The use of a compatible numerical format for grading the degree of bladder outlet obstruction would maximize the usefulness of pressure-flow studies in the evaluation of obstructed patients. Using the OCO value revealed that Finasteride was superior to Doxazosin regarding the degree of improvement in obstruction caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Comparaison entre le Doxazosin et le Finasteride dans le traitement des hypertrophies bénignes de la prostate très volumineuses et symptomatiques: Etude basée sur un questionnaire et des études urodynamiques Objectifs: Evaluer et comparer l'efficacité du Finastéride et du Doxazosin dans le traitement des hypertrophies bénignes de la prostate modérément symptomatiques et de grande taille et corréler les modifications de la symptomatologie avec les altérations des paramètres urodynamiques en utilisant les valeurs OCO (Normogramme de Sch fer). Patients et Méthodes: Cinquante patients présentant une hypertrophie bénigne de la prostate modérément symptomatique et de volume > 40 CC appréciée par l'échographie étaient inclus dans une étude randomisée utilisant le traitement soit par du Finastéride (5 mg/jour) soit par du Doxazosin (1-4 mg :jour) pendant 12 mois. Résultats : Aussi bien le Finastéride que le Doxazosin amélioraient significativement le débit urinaire. L'étude des pressions d'écoulement avaient confirmé qu'aussi bien le Finastéride que le Doxazosin réduisaient significativement la pression d'ouverture du détrusor, la pression du détrusor au flux maximal (Pdet Omax), et la pression du détrusor au flux minimal (Pdet least). En appliquant le normagramme de Sch fer les valeurs OCO étaient améliorées dans les deux groupes. Effect of Natural Products with Cancer Chemopreventive Agents on Endogenous Antioxidant Enzymes in the Liver of Albino Mice

Abstract: Five food substances rich in chemopreventive agents were assessed for their potential to increase the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes in the liver. The dietary supplements used were, onion, cabbage, honey, green tea and their combination. The effects of these supplements on the activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione-s-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), cytosolic superoxide dismutase (SOD1) and mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (SOD2) were examined. The result showed that the combination of these products increased the antioxidant enzymes activities significantly (p<0.05) and more potently than individual food supplement compared which animals on normal diet. Supplementation with the individual diet supplement significantly increased the activities of all the enzymes (p<0.05) except SOD1 and SOD2. However, combination of the supplements significantly increased the activities of SOD1 and SOD2 (p<0.05) in addition to the activities of the enzymes increased by individual food supplement (p<0.05).

The apoptogenic effect of nickel nanowires (Ni NWs) on cancer cell lines has never been adequately addressed. Due to the unique physicochemical characteristics of Ni NWs, we envision the development of a novel anticancer therapeutics specifically for pancreatic cancer. Thus, we investigated whether Ni NWs induce ROS-mediated apoptosis in human pancreatic adenocarcinoma (Panc-1) cells. Methods: In this study Ni NWs were fabricated using the electrodeposition method. Synthesized Ni NWs were physically characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy of NanoDrop 2000 (UV-Vis), magnetization study, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Assessment of morphological apoptotic characteristics by phase contrast microscopy (PCM), Ni-NWs-induced apoptosis staining with ethidium bromide (EB) and acridine orange (AO) followed by fluorescence microscopy (FM) was performed. For molecular biological and biochemical characterization, Panc-1 cell culture and cytotoxic effect of Ni NWs were determined by using 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Quantitative apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry staining with propidium iodide through cell cycle arrest and generation of ROS using 2', 7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate fluorescence intensity. In all experiments, Panc-1 cancer cells without any treatment were used as the negative controls. Results: The intracellular uptake of Ni NWs through endocytosis by Panc-1 cells was observed by PCM. EB and AO staining of FM and MTT assay qualitatively and quantitatively confirmed the extent of apoptosis. Flow cytometric cell cycle arrest and ROS generation indicated Ni NWs as inducers of apoptotic cell death. Conclusion: We investigated the role of Ni NWs as inducers of ROS-mediated apoptosis in Panc-1 cells. These results suggested that Ni NWs could be an effective apoptotic agent for Panc-1 cells and have good potential for further research into a clinical treatment selective for pancreatic cancer.

Abstract: Background: A problem which related with ergonomy factor commonly caused by conformity between the worker with occupation circles completely include occupation tools and the energy need or the amount of calori which used by the worker. Light in weight occupation which must be done by a worker will depend on changes indication appear and can be measured by measuring human part of body such as the rapid artery beat. The kind of measuring done for knowing how big the physical load accepted by the worker so that cause weariness. This experiment as a purpose to know the relation between the occupation weariness of the laundry workers in Kelurahan Warungboto Kecamatan Umbulharjo Yogyakarta City. Method: The kind of this experiment is observational analytic with study program Cross Sectional. The data interpretation done by measuring of artery beat on wrist (radical artery) to see the respondent occupation load and measuring weariness by Reaction timer tool. Result: From the test result statistic, so respondent there are relation between occupation load with occupation weariness Laundry worker in Kelurahan Warungboto Kecamatan Umbulharjo Yogyakarta city statistically mean (Sig-2 tailed 0,0000). Ho which states is no relationship between load with occupation weariness of the laundry worker “rejected” Ha which states there is relationship between load with occupation weariness of the laundry worker “accepted”. Conclusion: There are relation that mean between occupation load with occupation weariness of the laundry worker in Kelurahan Warungboto Kecamatan Umbulharjo Yogyakarta city.
