Abstract: objective: to assess the magnitude, geographical distribution and trends of the prevalence of nutritional anemia among preschoolers and to identify risk groups in the state of paraiba, brazil. methods: a cross-sectional survey with multistage random sampling procedure was conducted in 8 urban municipalities of three mid-regions (zona da mata, agreste and sert?o) in the state of paraíba in 1992. a total of 1,287 preschoolers of both sexes were selected. hemoglobin was determined by the cyanometahemoglobin method in venous blood, employing <11 g/dl as the cut-off for anemia. statistical analysis of proportions employed the chi square test, whereas for means mann-whitney and kruskal-wallis were the choice, all with confidence interval of 95%.. results: the prevalence of anemia was 36.4% (ci 33.7?39.1) in the state of paraiba, greater (p=0.00) than that observed (19.3%, ci 17.3?21.5) in 1982. only 1.0% (ci 0.61?1.8) and 6.8% (ci 5.5?8.3) of anemia cases were classified as severe and moderate, respectively. boys presented lower mean hemoglobin concentration (p=0.00), and children under age 3 comprised the biological group of highest susceptibility for deficiency status (p= 0.00). it was found that the second year of life is the most critical for developing nutritional deficiency (p= 0.00). the agreste mid-region revealed to be the geographical area of highest risk (p= 0.00), outlining a new epidemiological dynamics when compared to the year 1982, when the drought-ridden sert?o region were the geographical area at greatest risk of deficiency. conclusions: according to international epidemiological criteria, anemia in the studied regions represents a public health problem of moderate degree assuming the analytical comparability of the 1982 and 1992 cross-sectional surveys, it suggests an increasingly prevalence of nutritional anemia (+88.5%) in all 3 mid-regions in a 10-year-period (1982-92).

Abstract: introduction: thirty-seven elderly citizens, deficient in vitamin c and institutionalized in the city of jo?o pessoa/paraíba/brazil, were studied with the objective of investigating the period of vitamin c supplementation necessary to normalize their blood serum levels. methods: the study also compared the efficiency of the natural vitamin, supplied in the form of west indian cherry juice, (malpighia glabra l.) to that of the pharmaceutical product (tablets). the aged citizens were divided into 3 groups: group i - control, group ii - supplemented with west indian cherry juice, and group iii - supplemented with tablets. the methodology applied consisted of dosing the serum vitamin c levels and making a dietary enquiry to determine food consumption. results: a significant increase (p<0.05) in the mean serum ascorbic acid levels was shown after 10 (1.27±0.41mg/dl), 20 (1.69±0.45mg/dl) and 30 (1.55±0.42mg/dl) days of supplementation, as compared to the initial values (0.38±0.28mg/dl). on the 10th day of supplementation, those supplemented with west indian cherry juice showed levels significantly higher (1.41±0.43mg/dl) than those supplemented with tablets (1.03±0.25mg/dl). conclusion: on the 20th day, the supplementation had satisfactorily normalized the blood serum levels of the institutionalized aged citizens. therefore, this amount of time could be considered as the necessary supplementation period for the aged in general. moreover, especially, for those who live in institutions with limited resources, west indian cherry juice should be the supplement of choice, since it is a natural and affordable product.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the association between waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the elderly (considering their most prevalent morbidities and lifestyles), to investigate the relationship between this anthropometric index and the presence of the most prevalent morbidities (isolated or combined), and to identify which morbidities (analyzed individually) would have greater associations with WHtR. This cross-sectional population-based epidemiological study of a stratified sampling comprised 170 elderly individuals between 60 and 90 years of age (both genders). Home visits were used to administer questionnaires and to perform anthropometric measurements and blood collection. The mean patient age was younger than 70 years, with women comprising the majority (69.41%) and with 90% of the patients presenting with inadequate WHtR. Hypertension was the most prevalent morbidity in this cohort (58.52%), and when analyzed in combination, hypertension plus obesity were the most frequently diagnosed morbidities (17.65%). Obesity, which was among the most prevalent comorbidities, was the only comorbidity combined with WHtR ( p = 0.0019). Individuals with no morbidities had lower mean WHtR values compared with individuals with at least one morbidity ( p = 0.0075). In the multiple linear regression model, it was identified that when individuals had one or more of the most prevalent comorbidities, the mean WHtR increased by 0.0415 ( p = 0.0065). A correlation between WHtR and CRP ( p = 0.0379) was also verified. Based on the relationships observed between WHtR (isolated or in combination, data unpublished) and CRP among the elderly, WHtR may represent a screening tool because it is a simple and effective anthropometric index.
