Technico-Economical Evaluation of CO2 Transport in an Adsorbed Phase  [PDF]

Abstract: This work considers the possibility to transport CO2 in an adsorbed phase and analyzes its cost as a function of transported quantities, transport conditions and transportation means. CO2 adsorption capacities of 6 different adsorbents, comprising 4 activated carbons and 2 zeolites, were empirically evaluated in a given range of pressure and temperature. The adsorbent with the highest mass adsorption capacity (AC1), as well as another sorbent described in the literature (AC5) were selected to be used for CO2 transportation by ships, trains or trucks. Their characteristics and performances were then used to develop an economic analysis of transportation costs and CO2 emissions generated by the transport with or without storage. Economic evaluation of CO2 batch transport shows that CO2 transported in an adsorbed phase by train was seen to be almost competitive on distances between 250 and 500 km, in comparison to liquefied CO2. One of the activated carbon appeared to be competitive on short distances by truck when transport was not followed by storage. Ship transport of adsorbed CO2 on distances around 1500 km was competitive, when CO2 was used as delivered; there was an over cost of only 16%, when there was storage after the transport. The CO2 emissions generated by CO2 transport and storage when transport is carried out in an adsorbed phase were smaller than the ones generated by liquid phase transport below 1200 km, 500 km and 300 km by ship, train and truck respectively, as a function of the adsorbent used. Adsorbed CO2 transported on 1500 km by ship generated 27% less CO2 emissions than liquid phase and 17% by train for a distance of 250 km and 16% by truck on 150 km, although these differences were decreasing with the distance of transport.

Abstract: the causes of ischemic stroke in young patients are difficult to find, in spite of systematic investigations directed to rule out heart etiology, alterations in coagulation or any other type of vascular disease; hence the ?cryptogenic? definition. there have been speculations regarding the potential role of right-to-left intracardiac shunts as a path for paradoxical embolisms that result in ischemic cerebral disease. transesophagic echocardiography with peripheral venous injection of saline contrast has shown to be the preferred method for the diagnosis of patent foramen ovale and right-to-left shunt. prospective studies using acetylsalicylic acid or warfarin have not shown significant reduction of recurrent strokes. even though both surgical and percutaneous closure of the patent foramen ovale have shown to decrease the rate of subsequent embolic episodes, their indication remains under discussion, at least until the appearance of randomized clinical trials, now under development. however, the cases of recurrent paradoxical embolism and those in professional scuba divers, both with intra-atrial septum aneurysm and an associated patent foramen ovale, are the only unequivocal indications for percutaneous closure. successful closure, defined by transesophagic echocardiography, seems to predict lack of recurrent embolic events. as the complication rate of device implantation may decrease and these devices become technologically simple, percutaneous closure will prevail over surgical closure.

Abstract: Las causas de ataque isquémico en pacientes jóvenes, son difíciles de encontrar pese a las investigaciones sistemáticas dirigidas a descartar origen cardiaco, alteraciones de la coagulación o cualquier otro tipo de enfermedades vasculares; de ahí la definición de criptogénico . Se especula acerca del papel potencial de los cortocircuitos intracardiacos de derecha a izquierda como vía de embolismos paradójicos que culminan en enfermedad cerebral isquémica. Se demostró que la ecocardiografía transesofágica con inyección venosa periférica de solución salina agitada, es el método de elección para diagnosticar foramen ovale permeable y cortocircuito de derecha a izquierda. Estudios prospectivos que utilizan tratamiento con ácido acetil salicílico o warfarina, no demuestran una reducción significativa de los ataques recurrentes. Aunque, tanto el cierre quirúrgico del foramen ovale permeable como el percutáneo, muestran una disminución de la tasa de eventos embólicos subsecuentes, aún se discute su indicación, al menos hasta que aparezcan resultados de trabajos con escogencia al azar, que están en proceso en la actualidad. Sin embargo, los casos de embolismo paradójico recurrente y en los buzos profesionales, ambos casos con aneurisma del septum auricular y foramen ovale permeable asociados, son las únicas indicaciones inequívocas de cierre percutáneo. El cierre exitoso, definido por ecocardiografía transesofágica, parece predecir la ausencia de eventos embólicos recurrentes. En la medida en que la tasa de complicaciones de la implantación de dispositivos disminuya y que éstos sean técnicamente más sencillos, el cierre percutáneo se impondrá al quirúrgico. Cerebellum: links between development, developmental disorders and motor learning

Abstract: The study of the links and interactions between development and motor learning has noticeable implications for the understanding and management of neurodevelopmental disorders. This is particularly relevant for the cerebellum which is critical for sensorimotor learning. The olivocerebellar pathway is a key pathway contributing to learning of motor skills. Its developmental maturation and remodeling are being unraveled. Advances in genetics have led to major improvements in our appraisal of the genes involved in cerebellar development, especially studies in mutant mice. Cerebellar neurogenesis is compartmentalized in relationship with neurotransmitter fate. The Engrailed-2 gene is a major actor of the specification of cerebellar cell types and late embryogenic morphogenesis. Math1, expressed by the rhombic lip, is required for the genesis of glutamatergic neurons. Mutants deficient for the transcription factor Ptf1a display a lack of Purkinje cells and gabaergic interneurons. Rora gene contributes to the developmental signaling between granule cells and Purkinje neurons. The expression profile of sonic hedgehog in postnatal stages determines the final size/shape of the cerebellum. Genes affecting the development impact upon the physiological properties of the cerebellar circuits. For instance, receptors are developmentally regulated and their action interferes directly with developmental processes. Another field of research which is expanding relates to very preterm neonates. They are at risk for cerebellar lesions, which may themselves impair the developmental events. Very preterm neonates often show sensori-motor deficits, highlighting another major link between impaired developments and learning deficiencies. Pathways playing a critical role in cerebellar development are likely to become therapeutical targets for several neurodevelopmental disorders.
Modeling turbulent wave-front phase as a fractional Brownian motion: a new approach

Abstract: This paper introduces a general and new formalism to model the turbulent wave-front phase using fractional Brownian motion processes. Moreover, it extends results to non-Kolmogorov turbulence. In particular, generalized expressions for the Strehl ratio and the angle-of-arrival variance are obtained. These are dependent on the dynamic state of the turbulence.

Abstract: It is discussed the limitations of the widely used markovian approximation applied to model the turbulent refractive index in lightwave propagation. It is well-known the index is a passive scalar field. Thus, the actual knowledge about these quantities is used to propose an alternative stochastic process to the markovian approximation: the fractional Brownian motion. This generalizes the former introducing memory; that is, there is correlation along the propagation path.

Abstract: A first step towards a systematic theory of relative line bundles over SUSY-curves is presented. In this paper we deal with the case of relative line bundles over families of ordinary Riemann surfaces. Generalizations of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and of the flatness theorem for line bundles are discussed.
