Microstructural Analysis of AM50/Mg2Si Cast Magnesium Composites

Abstract: AM50/Mg2Si composites containing 5.7 wt. % and 9.9 wt. %. of Mg2Si reinforcing phase were prepared successfully by casting method.The microstructure of the cast AM50/Mg2Si magnesium matrix composites was investigated by light microscopy and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The microstructure of these composites was characterized by the presence of α-phase (a solid solution of aluminium in magnesium), Mg17Al12 (γ-phase), Al8Mn5 and Mg2Si. It was demonstrated that the Mg2Si phase was formed mainly as primary dendrites and eutectic.
Microstructural Characterization of Cast Magnesium Matrix Composites by Raman Microscopy

Abstract: Cast magnesium matrix composites reinforced with silicon carbide particles were investigated by using Raman microscopy. 3C, 4H and6H polytypes of SiC particles were identified in the investigated composites. Additionally, Mg2Si compound was detected by Ramanmicroscopy in the composites microstructure.
Insect Pests Complex of Sunflower, Helianthus annuus L.

Abstract: The most important species attacking the sunflower crop are whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Gennad.), plant hopper (Empoasca spp), cabbage semilooper (Thysanoplusia orichalcea F.), hairy caterpillar (Diacretia obliqua Walk.), green stink bug (Nezara viridula L.), Helicoverpa armigera Hubner and dusky bug (Nysius inconspicuus Distant.). The peak infestation of sucking pests, whitefly and plant hopper was observed in last week of May and first week of June, respectively on spring crop. Their population remained high upto the first week of October on autumn. Among the defoliators, the maximum population of cabbage semilooper was observed during the second week of April and again in the second week of September. The peak population of hairy caterpillar was recorded in the second week of October. However, the later pest did not appear during spring. Among the direct pests, the highest numbers of H. armigera Hubner was recorded in the first week of May. It did not attack during autumn. The highest population of dusk bug was noted in the first week of October as well as in the first week of June. These results, however, confirmed that whitefly is a serious pest on autumn sunflower while high population of plant hoppers during both the seasons caused more damage than that of whitefly. The present study also showed that cabbage semilooper may be a potential sunflower pest. The green stink bug and H. armigera Hubner. have found to be minor pests. The dusky bug might be classified as a serious pest of spring.
Detection of β - Lactam Antibiotic Residues in Market Milk

Abstract: The present study was conducted to evaluate the extent of β - lactam antibiotics residues in unprocessed market milk during the year 2006. Milk samples were randomly collected from Hyderabad city, Latifabad and Qasimabad. Microbial screening test (Bacillus subtilus Field Disc Assay) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) methods were used to detect, identify and quantify the β-lactam residues in milk. A total of 137 milk samples were screened. Among these 63.50% were negative and 36.50% positive for β - lactam antibiotics residues. The zones size of positive samples appeared between 5.0 and 15.0mm (mean 8.91 ± 0.36mm). Residues level quantified between 0.4 to 400 μg/L for Penicillin G, between 1.0 to 190μg/L for Amoxicillin, between 0.5 to 141μg/L for Ampicillin and between 2.1 to 122μg/L (40.74 ± 10.59μg/L) for unknown antibiotics. The residues of Penicillin G (mean 59.53μg/L) in unprocessed milk was 14.9 and 11.9 fold, Amoxicillin (mean 36.11μg/L) 9.03 and 3.61 fold, Ampicillin (mean 46.91μg/L) 11.73 and 4.69 fold higher than (MRL`s) standards of EU (4μg/L) and FDA (5 and 10μg/L), respectively.
Analysis of heavy alloying elements segregation in gravity cast experimental Mg-Al-Zn-RE alloy

Abstract: Microstructure of experimental AZ91 alloy with an addition of rare earth elements (RE) at a level of 4 wt.% was examined by means of light microscopy. The investigated AZ91 + 4 wt.% RE alloy was fabricated by adding cerium rich mish metal to molten commercial AZ91 alloy. In the microstructure of the resulting alloy, besides α solid solution, α + γ eutectic and discontinuous precipitates of γ phase, also the Al11RE3 phase with needle-like morphology and the polygonal Al10RE2Mn7 phase were revealed. No segregation of rare earth elements was found in the investigated gravity cast alloy, which was confirmed by statistical analysis of cerium concentrations in selected parts of the cast. Similar results were obtained for manganese. Ce and Mn concentrations were determined by a spectrophotometric method.
Performance of Maize Genotypes on the Basis of Stability Analysis in Pakistan

Abstract: Six maize genotypes were evaluated in National Uniform Maize Yield Trials across six contrasting locations having different agro-climatic conditions. Pooled analysis of variance for grain yield indicated significant differences for genotypes across the environments, environment across genotypes and their interactions. These significant interactions indicated uneven performance of the genotypes across the environments and years. In stability analysis, all the parameters applied proved two genotypes as the most stable across the environments. These genotypes gave the highest grain yield and were also earlier in maturity. One genotype showed fitness for favourable environments and two for poor yielding environments.

Carcass Composition of Crossbred and Straightbred Lambs Finished on a High Concentrate Diet

Abstract: The body measurements and carcass composition of 35 Naeemi x Border Leicester Merino (NaeemixBLM) crossbred and 9 Naeemi straightbred lambs were investigated. The Naeemi lambs were, on average, 2 kg heavier and had the Body Conditioning Scores (BCS) that were 0.78 points lower and body lengths that were 10.2 cm shorter than the crossbred lambs. There were no significant differences between the genetic groups for (GR) or (BT) but crossbred lambs had significantly more kidney fat. They also had 5.5% higher dressing percentages and 14% higher carcass yields than the Naeemi lambs. Carcass moisture and protein were 6.3 and 1.6% higher and fat was 7.8% lower in the whole carcasses of the Naeemi lambs than in those of the crossbred lambs. It is concluded that the Naeemi x BLM lambs produce heavier carcasses but also accumulate more carcass fat than straight Naeemi lambs.
Measurement of Different Types of Potato Chips by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer  [PDF]

Potato chips are considered as one of the most popular and preferable children’s foods in Saudi Arabia. The aim of this study was to examine the concentration of 12 chemical elements (i.e. Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, As, Se and Al) in different types of potato chips. Samples were analyzed using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). The average concentrations of analyzed elements in all potato chips were examined and compared with the recommendations of international organizations concerned with food safety. From the human health point of view, this investigation showed that there was no possible health risk to consumers due to the intake of potato chips.

Levels of C-reactive protein in serum samples from healthy children and adults in S?o Paulo, Brazil

Abstract: c-reactive protein (crp) was measured by elisa in the sera of 165 healthy blood donors and 125 normal children 1 to 14 years old. the serum levels of blood donors ranged from 0.05 to 57.6 mg/l with median and mean values of 1.8 mg/l and 4.86 mg/l, respectively. crp levels ranged from 0.02 to 14.4 mg/l in the children's sera, the median being 0.45 mg/l and the mean 1.65 mg/l. no individual lacking crp was detected. the high crp levels observed in the present study suggest that the population of the state of s?o paulo may usually be exposed to subacute infections and/or inflammation without presenting clinical symptoms
