Revista de Relaciones Internacionales, Estrategia y Seguridad , 2012,
Abstract: in light of the security strategies prompted by the united states after the break-up of the soviet union, like plan colombia and the merida initiative, and considering the growing struggles for access to raw materials and natural resources in latin america, this article aims to analyze the american hemispheric security policy at the start of the cold war, as an option to broaden the horizon of understanding of the current processes and security guidelines. the links between political, economic and military aspects will be discussed, considering the relation, objectives and reaches of security, development and democracy, from the viewpoint and guidelines proposed by u.s. officials in public documents, such as the state department official bulletin and other "secret" material (now declassified) by the state department.

Assistance "for development" occupied an important role in U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America, especially since the Cuban revolution. These programs promoted by the private sector and the U.S. government, responding to specific interests seldom mentioned level of official discourse. This article will explore the possible interest linked to attendance, as well as the link between economic assistance and support for the "safety", doing a tour in the role of care from the Cold War to the present. This takes up declassified State Department, the Department of State Bulletin, official documentation (statistics and programs) and statements by officials of the United States and Latin America.
Effects of partial decerebration and hypophyseal allograft in the thymus of chicken embryos: thymostimulin localization and enzymatic activities
M Aita,N Romano
European Journal of Histochemistry , 2006, DOI: 10.4081/977
Abstract: Changes in chicken embryo thymus after partial decerebration (including the hypophysis) and hypophyseal allograft were investigated. Chicken embryos were partially decerebrated at 36-40 hr of incubation and on day 12 received a hypophyseal allograft from 18-day-old donor embryos. The embryonic thymuses were collected on day 18 and examined with histological methods, tested for the anti-thymostimulin- like immune-reaction, and for histoenzymatic activities and compared with normal and sham-operated embryos at the same age. After partial decerebration, the thymic cortical and medullary compartments diminished markedly in size. Anti-thymostimulin, succinic dehydrogenase and ATPase enzymatic activities tested, yielded negative reactions. In partially decerebrated hypophyseal allografted embryos, the same thymic compartments improved and anti-thymostimulin-like immune-reaction and enzymatic activities partially recovered. These findings confirmed the key role of hypophysis in thymic ontogenic development and provided new information in metabolic enzymatic pathways and synthesis of a thymostimulin-like substance in the thymus
Effective inter-band coupling in MgB2 due to anharmonic phonons
M. Acquarone,L. Romano'
Physics , 2003,
Abstract: We investigate the origin of the inter-band coupling in MgB2 by focusing on its unusual phononic features, namely, the strong anharmonicity of the phonons and the presence of both linear and quadratic electron-phonon interactions of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) type. The bare electronic Hamiltonian has two bands with intra- and inter-band hopping, which lead to two decoupled hybridized bands. The phonon Hamiltonian including the anharmonic terms is diagonalized approximately by a squeezing transformation, which causes the softening of the phonon frequency. The linear SSH coupling amplitude is reduced, consistently with the estimates from first-principle calculations. Additionally, the quadratic coupling generates an effective phonon-induced interaction between the hybridized bands, which is non-vanishing even in the limit of vanishing inter-bare-band hopping amplitude.
A model Hamiltonian for MgB2 which takes into account its unusual phononic features
M. Acquarone,L. Romano'
Physics , 2003, DOI: 10.1140/epjb/e2003-00251-y
Abstract: Taking as a starting point the results of LDA calculations, which show that in MgB2 the phonons have a strong quartic anharmonicity and that the bond-stretching electron-phonon interaction (EPI) has both a linear and a large quadratic component, we propose a model Hamiltonian which succesfully matches a number of experimental evidences. We relate the single critical temperature for both superconducting gaps to a phonon-induced inter-band coupling whose amplitude increases with temperature. We also obtain phonon frequencies and linewidths depending on the band filling, as well as band energies and hybridization amplitudes depending on the phonon number.
Morphology vs. physical properties: some comments and questions
Romano L. M. Corradi
Physics , 2000,
Abstract: Some of the correlations between morphological and other physical properties of planetary nebulae (PNe) are reviewed. In particular, the finding that bipolar (b) PNe have more massive progenitors than the other morphological classes is discussed in detail. Earlier results are confirmed; including all the various sources of uncertainty, the Galactic distribution of objects indicate that b PNe are formed by stars with initial masses >1.3 solar masses, while elliptical (e) PNe by progenitors with masses <1.3 solar masses. Recent results for the chemical abundances of b and e PNe and their orientation within the Galaxy are also presented. Finally, the key role in the discussion of the formation of b PNe played by detached binary systems such as symbiotic stars is briefly discussed.

Abstract: Wireless capsule endoscopy is a new endoscopic tool for the diagnosis and management of small bowel diseases. The main indication at present is the evaluation of GI bleeding of obscure origin, Crohn’s disease, coeliac disease and small bowel tumors. Studies suggest that capsule endoscopy is associated with few adverse events. Whether cardiac pacemaker may interfere with capsule endoscopy is still a controversial issue. We here report a case showing that there is a possibility of interference between the two procedures, cardiac pacemaker affecting the proper functioning of capsule endoscopy and that this is related to the distance between the pacemaker and the recorder.
Co-ocorrência entre transtorno de déficit de aten??o/hiperatividade e uso de substancias psicoativas
Szobot, Claudia M.;Romano, Marcos;
Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0047-20852007000500009
Abstract: attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (adhd) is highly associated with substance use disorders (suds), both in clinical and community studies. approximately 30% of subjects with suds present with comorbid adhd, a prevalence rate significantly higher than that seen in the general population. the effect of adhd on the development of suds have been subject to extensive studies. this article reviews the existing literature regarding: a) the nature of the association between adhd and suds; b) the impact of adhd on suds; c) the treatment of adhd which co-occurs with suds. finally an overview, from a predominantly clinical perspective, an integration of those data is proposed.
