COBE Observations of the Microwave Counterparts of Gamma Ray Bursts

Abstract: We have used the data from the COBE satellite to search for delayed microwave emission (31 - 90 GHz) from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). The large $7^\circ$ beam of COBE is well matched to the large positional uncertainties in the GRB locations, although it also means that fluxes from (point source) GRB objects will be diluted. In view of this we are doing a statistical search of the GRBs which occurred during the currently released COBE DMR data (years 1990 and 1991), which overlap $\sim 200$ GRBs recorded by GRO. Here we concentrate on just the top 10 GRBs (in peak counts/second). We obtain the limits on the emission by comparing the COBE fluxes before and after the GRB at the GRB location. Since it is thought that the microwave emission should lag the GRB event, we have searched the GRB position for emission in the few months following the GRB occurrence.
An Efficient Technique for making maps from Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

Abstract: We describe a new technique for turning scans of the microwave sky into intensity maps. The technique is based on a Fourier series analysis and is inspired by the lock-in deconvolution used in experiments which typically sweep the sky continuously. We test the technique on computer generated microwave skies and compare it to the more standard map making technique based on linear algebra. We find that our technique is much faster than the usual technique and, in addition, does not suffer from the problem of memory limitations. Lastly we demonstrate that the technique works under real experimental conditions using observations of the moon.
A search for millimetric emission from Gamma Ray Bursts

Abstract: We have used the 2- year Differential Microwave Radiometer data from the COsmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite to systematically search for millimetric (31 - 90 GHz) emission from the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) GRB 3B catalog. The large beamsize of the COBE instrument (7 degs FWHM) allows for an efficient search of the large GRB positional error boxes, although it also means that fluxes from (point source) GRB objects will be somewhat diluted. A likelihood analysis has been used to look for a change in the level of millimetric emission from the locations of 81 GRB events during the first two years (1990 & 1991) of the COBE mission. The likelihood analysis determined that we did not find any significant millimetric signal before or after the occurance of the GRB. We find 95% confidence level upper limits of 175, 192 and 645 Jy or, in terms of fluxes, of 9.6, 16.3 and 54.8 10^{-13} erg/cm^2/s, respectively at 31, 53 and 90 GHz. We also look separately at different classes of GRBs, including a study of the top ten (in peak flux) GRBs, the "short burst" and "long burst" subsets, finding similar upper limits. While these limits may be somewhat higher than one would like, we estimate that using this technique with future planned missions could push these limits down to \sim 1 mJy.

Abstract: t can be said that discourses developed based on the concept of “culture” that has multiple definitions have been reshaped by the conditions resulting from postmodernism and globalization. In order to define the conceptual problem of culture, it is essential that we recognize/define such elements as belief, knowledge, stance and intuition that communities transfer from one generation to another in the historical process as well. Nowadays, due to globalization, no culture and human society in the world thoroughly and indifferently lives in a homogeneous integrity of a single culture. An advantage of postmodernism is that even minor cultural structures in which people are involved have gained importance. In this context, almost everything has begun to be perceived as culture. The differentiation of existent concepts of culture and cultural change in the broadest sense is a constant factor of human civilization and it occurs anywhere and at any time. The only constant rules/principles of life and cultures have been the concepts of change and continuity. The concept of Kitsch has a complex structure in terms of scope and content. It is not easy to assign only one meaning to Kitsch as a concept or to find an exact equivalent of it. When we just examine the literal meaning of this word, it can be said that it is used as an adjective meaning vain, of vulgar taste, banal and boring used for productions or it is used to classify art which is seen as an inferior copy of existent things.Other concepts that come with the concept of Kitsch are cultural degeneration, upper class tastes, lower-class tastes, the concepts of superior culture and sub-culture. In this context, “kitsch” means more than solely its artistic use, it has got other more meanings in other concepts.

The IAC-Bartol Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy Experiment: Results of the 1994 Campaign

Abstract: We present the results of a Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy ground-based millimetric experiment sensitive to fluctuations on angular scales of $\sim 2\degg$. Four independent bands centered at 3.3, 2.1, 1.3 and 1.1 mm collected $\sim 550$ hours of observation during the Summer of 1994. The instrument was located on the island of Tenerife at an altitude of 2400 m. The low water-vapor content and the atmospheric stability of the site, combined with new techniques to subtract atmospheric noise, result in the reduction of atmospheric contamination in the lowest frequency channel to a level of $\sim 1.5$~times the instrument noise. Detailed estimations of Galactic foreground contamination show that this contribution is negligible at $|b| \stackrel{>}{_\sim} 12\degg$. Two different multipole bands ($\ell=53^{+22}_{-13}$ and $33^{+24}_{-13}$) are analyzed showing that our technique to subtract the atmospheric contribution is more effective in the multipole band at $\ell=53$. A likelihood analysis of these data reveals the presence of a common signal between the channels at 3.3, 2.1 and 1.3 mm corresponding to a band power estimate of $ \sqrt{\lla (\lla+1) C_{\lla}/(2 \pi)} = 2.0^{+1.0}_{-0.8} \cdot 10^{-5}$ and $\sqrt{\lla (\lla+1) C_{\lla}/(2 \pi)} = 4.1^{+2.4}_{-2.2} \cdot 10^{-5}$ for the $\ell =53$ and 33 multipole bands respectively. Calibration uncertainty has been treated as a systematic effect. The level of fluctuations in the $\ell =53$ band is in good agreement with our preliminary analysis presented in Piccirillo \et 1997, with measurements by other experiments working at similar angular scales, and with the predictions of standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models.
Comparison of existing syncope rules and newly proposed anatolian syncope rule to predict short-term serious outcomes after syncope in the Turkish population

Abstract: This prospective, cohort study was conducted at the emergency department of a tertiary care centre. Between December 1 2009 and December 31 2010, we prospectively collected data on patients of ages 18 and over who presented to the emergency department with syncope.We enrolled 231 patients to the study. A univariate analysis found 23 variables that predicted syncope with adverse events. Dyspnoea, orthostatic hypotension, precipitating cause of syncope, age over 58 years, congestive heart failure, and electrocardiogram abnormality (termed DO-PACE) were found to predict short-term serious outcomes by logistic regression analysis and these were used to compose the ASR. The sensitivity of ASR, OESIL, EGSYS and SFSR for mortality were 100% (0.66 to 1.00); 90% (0.54 to 0.99), 80% (0.44 to 0.97) and 100% (0.66 to 1.00), respectively. The specificity of ASR, OESIL, EGSYS and SFSR for mortality were 78% (0.72 to 0.83); 76% (0.70 to 0.82); 80% (0.74 to 0.85) and 70% (0.63 to 0.76). The sensitivity of ASR, OESIL, EGSYS and SFSR for any adverse event were 97% (0.85 to 1.00); 70% (0.52 to 0.82); 56% (0.40 to 0.72) and 87% (0.72 to 0.95). The specificity of ASR, OESIL, EGSYS and SFSR for any adverse event were 72% (0.64 to 0.78); 82% (0.76 to 0.87); 84% (0.78 to 0.89); 78% (0.71 to 0.83), respectively.The newly proposed ASR appears to be highly sensitive for identifying patients at risk for short-term serious outcomes, with scores at least as good as those provided by existing diagnostic rules, and it is easier to perform at the bedside within the Turkish population. Abstract: Pods and leaves as an energy supplement is a basic forage, rich in protein and highly digestible. The nutritional values of pods and leaves differ among trees due to highly specific proteins of different digestibility. To estimate and compare seasonally, the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of nutrients in leaves and entire pods of Gleditsia triacanthos L. plants were harvested from a native shrubs and trees during Fall 2004, Winter, Spring and Summer 2005. The in vitro technique was used to measure the digestibility of Dry Matter (DM) and Crude Protein (CP). The crude protein content varied within range of 7.8% (Winter) to 9.4% (Summer) for leaves and from 12% (Spring) to 15% (Fall) for entire pods. The annual means of acid detergent fiber (19.5%) and neutral detergent fiber (35.8%) content in leaves was lower than the alfalfa (26%) as feed reference. However, the annual means of ADF for pods (30.6%) was higher than the (Medicago sativa). The lignin content was high both in leaves (10.4%) as well as in pods (12.1%) in comparison to the alfalfa (9%). In general, during the Spring (71.4%) and Summer (73.4%) the entire pods were higher in CP and DM digestibility and during Winter (56.3-64.2%) were low.
Millimetric Ground Based Observation of CMBR Anisotropy at $δ =+28^{\lowercase{o}}$

Abstract: Results from the third campaign of a ground-based multi-band observation of the millimeter emission of the sky from Tenerife (Canary Islands) are presented. The instrument consists of a 0.45 meter diameter off-axis telescope equipped with a 4-band multi-mode $^3He$ cooled photometer working at 1.1, 1.3, 2.1 and 3.1{\notetoeditor{These are effective wavelengths}} mm wavelengths. The beam is well approximated by a Gaussian with 1$% ^{o}$.35 Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) at all wavelengths. The wide wavelength coverage of our instrument allows us to characterize and reduce both the atmospheric and galactic contamination in our data. The CMBR data is analyzed in 6 multipole bands whose centers span the range $\ell=39$ to $\ell =134$ at the two longest wavelengths (2.1 and 3.1 mm). A likelihood analysis indicates that we have detected fluctuations in all bands at the two wavelengths. We have evidence of a rise in the angular power spectrum from low $\ell $ to high $\ell $. Our measured spectrum is consistent with current popular theories of large scale structure formation, COBE, and other recent balloon-borne experiments with similar wavelength coverage.
