It has been reported the existence of an association between Chronic Viral Hepatitis C and type 2 Diabetes mellitus, probably as a manifestation of the chronic hepatic disease and/or one of its extra-hepatic manifestations. Recently, it has been reported the appearance of type 1 Diabetes mellitus after treatment with interferon-alpha, associated with the appearance of anti-pancreatic antibodies or with an increase in their titration. We pretend to illustrate a severe case of new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus, 5 months after combined treatment with interferon-alpha and ribavirin. Our objective is to enhance the importance of evaluate the risk of developing diabetes mellitus with the treatment.

Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.90.035213
Abstract: Defects in the rutile TiO${}_2$ structures have been extensively studied, but the intrinsic defects of the oxygen deficient Ti${}_n$O${}_{2n-1}$ phases have not been given the same amount of consideration. Those structures, known as Magn\'eli phases, are characterized by the presence of ordered planes of oxygen vacancies, also known as shear-planes, and it has been shown that they form conducting channels inside TiO-based memristor devices. Memristors are excellent candidates for a new generation of memory devices in the electronics industry. In this paper we present DFT-based electronic structure calculations for Ti${}_n$O${}_{2n-1}$ Magn\'eli structures using PBESol+U ($0 \leq U \leq 5$ eV) and HSE functionals, showing that intrinsic defects present in these structures are responsible for the appearance of states inside the bandgap, which can act as intrinsic dopants for the enhanced conductivity of TiO${}_2$ memristive devices.

Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982011000400010
Abstract: the objectives of this study were to evaluate a multibreed heteroskedastic animal model (mamr) to estimate residual variance heterogeneity due to breed, heterozigosity, sex and contemporary groups (cg) and robustness to outliers. differences on variance components, heritability and genetic values estimates were evaluated. it was used 4,016 records of post weaning weight gain (pwg) from brangus foundation herd of embrapa pecuária sul. data were analyzed by mamr with four different residual distribution specifications, which were defined by the nature of residual variance, homoskedastic (ho) or heteroskedastic (he) and by the gaussian (g) or student t marginal residual distribution. the best data fit was achived by using mamr-t-he and it was observed heteroscedasticity due to sex and animal heterozigosity and among contemporary groups. there were substantial differences in genetic variances of breed groups estimated by using different models and in the heteroskedastic, mamr-g-he and mamr-t-he. the greatest differences on heritability estimates occured among different breed groups. it was also noted a reordering in the ranking of superior animals regarded to genetic merit when heterogenous residual variances and robustness to outliers were considered. multibreed genetic evaluations by using the student t distribution model to describe residuals and assuming heterogenous residual variances are more appropriate to perform inference on genetic merit of animals from crossbreeding progenies of angus and nelore purebred animals.

Abstract: we have investigated the electronic structure of cd1_xmnxte parabolic quantum wells and half-parabolic quantum wells heterostructures in the envelope function approximation using the k · p method. we have considered an external magnetic field applied in two different configurations: in the plane of the layer and in the growth direction. the confined states have been calculated taking into account the effective mass dependence of the mn concentration and the strain effects. in this work we analyze the giant zeeman splitting due to applied magnetic fields and we havecompared the energies of the excitonic transitions hh (lh) ?el for the magnetic field in the two considered configurations. comparison of our results for the half-parabolic quantum wells with available experimental data is made.

Fatores determinantes da anemia em crian?as
Osório, M?nica M.;
Jornal de Pediatria , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0021-75572002000400005
Abstract: objective: to present a review about the main determining factors of anemia in children under 5 years old. source of data: information was used from articles published in indexed national and international scientific journals, technical books and publications from international organizations. summary of the findings: anemia constitutes the world's nutritional problem of the greater magnitude, and children under 5 years old represent one of the highest risk population groups. as with any public health problem, the origin of anemia is multi-causal and thus in this article the attempt is to interpret its direct or indirect relation with possible determinant factors and the main concordant or discordant findings in epidemiological studies. among these factors are the social and economic conditions, the conditions of child health care, the child's nutritional state, the presence of morbidity, food consumption and biological factors. the role of the diet is emphasized with respect to the consumption and bioavailability of iron, and age of the child as the main determinants. conclusions: bearing in mind the magnitude of the problem and the breadth of its risk factors reviewed in this study, the implementation of urgent prevention and treatment measures for iron-deficiency anemia becomes necessary. it is important to stress that a single strategy may have little success if other measures are not taken simultaneously; the role of nutritional education being relevant, together with other implemented actions. children under 2 years old and children who live in rural and deprived areas should be priorities in programs to combat anemia.
