BMC Research Notes , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1756-0500-2-230
Abstract: Three pumas killed 23 bighorn sheep over the course of the study, but they did not preferentially prey on marked (radiocollared) versus unmarked bighorn sheep. Predation occurred primarily during crepuscular and nighttime hours, and 22 kill sites were identified by the occurrence of 2 or more consecutive puma GPS locations (a cluster) within 200 m of each other at 1900, 0000, and 0600 h.We tested the "conspicuous individual hypothesis" and found that there was no difference in puma predation upon radiocollared and uncollared bighorn sheep. Pumas tended to move long distances before and after kills, but their movement patterns immediately post-kill were much more restricted. Researchers can exploit this behaviour to identify puma kill sites and investigate prey selection by designing studies that detect puma locations that are spatially clustered between dusk and dawn.Pumas (Puma concolor) are known predators of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in North America, but puma behaviour and movements associated with these predation events are poorly understood. Ross et al. [1] found predation on Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep to be an individual behaviour in Alberta, and Logan and Sweanor [2] and Ernest et al. [3] also presented evidence for differences in the frequency that individual pumas killed desert bighorn sheep in the southwestern United States. Although these studies identified individual pumas that selectively killed bighorn sheep, they left important questions unanswered. During ongoing studies of pumas and endangered bighorn sheep in the Peninsular Ranges of California, we radiocollared 3 pumas (1 female and her 2 offspring) who subsequently each killed multiple bighorn sheep (total ≥ 23). This gave us the opportunity to critically evaluate whether or not pumas selectively preyed on radiocollared versus uncollared bighorn sheep (because marked animals are more conspicuous), and to examine movement patterns at and around bighorn sheep kill sites. The Peninsular Rang

Abstract: this article analyzes the scope of student community service in the context of venezuelan higher education. based on a qualitative investigation, in-depth interviews were carried out with community services coordinators belonging to five (5) public and private universities in the zulia region. the university community evidences diverse interpretations related to fulfillment of the law, as the described initiatives show, referring to an implicit resistance by the student to development of the programmed initiatives. the results invite reflection on the need to strengthen social action so the student can internalize the values of cooperation, participation and responsibility needed to achieve the objectives of building an ideal of citizenship, recognizing that this will not appear in all contexts in the same way, since it depends on social processes in their multiple expressions, on the particular circumstances existing in each community and on the diversity of relationships among the social actors involved.

Abstract: The MOSCAB experiment (Materia OSCura A Bolle) uses a new technique for Dark Matter search. The Geyser technique is applied to the construction of a prototype detector with a mass of 0.5 kg and the encouraging results are reported here; an accent is placed on a big detector of 40 kg in construction at the Milano-Bicocca University and INFN.

Abstract: the objetive of this study is to analyze the quality of service rendered by the muncipal autonomous tax administration service (samat), by comparing perception and expectations of maracaibo taxpayers regarding the service rendered by samat. research was of the descriptive type with a non-experimental, trans-sectional, field design. a questionnaire-type instrument was designed and applied to a sample of 270 taxpayers in three periods characteristic for the sector under study. the instrument was validated by five experts, then its reliability was calculated using the alpha cronbach method, whose co-efficient was 0.97. conclusions were that the perceived service quality only moderately covers clients? expectations in terms of the analyzed components (tangible and intangible elements: reliability, response capacity, security, empathy); therefore, taxpayers are not satisfied with the service offered by samat. recommendations are that strategies be created and put into practice oriented toward developing a service focused on the taxpayer, centered on responding to his or her expectations and needs, as well as carrying out campaigns to incentivate a taxpaying culture among citizens.

Abstract: The external shell of the CUORE cryostat is a large cryogen-free system designed to host the dilution refrigerator and the bolometers of the CUORE experiment in a low radioactivity environment. The three vessels that form the outer shell were produced and delivered to the Gran Sasso underground Laboratories in July 2012. In this paper, we describe the production techniques and the validation tests done at the production site in 2012.

Abstract: We have measured a large number of proton-induced radionuclide production cross sections from tellurium targets of natural isotopic composition at incident energies of 0.80, 1.4, and 23 GeV. The results of these measurements are compared to semi-empirical calculations.

Abstract: the general objective of this paper is to analyze the quality of university education as a basis for strengthening institutional competition. it is a descriptive-documentary study. three populations are studied, made up of active researchers, students from the different faculties, and the external sector that maintains contact with research units within the university (luz). the sample selected was non-probabilistic, in the case of professors and students, and a census for the external sector. a structured instrument was applied to each population covering the variables under study. the results indicate that luz has groups of highly qualified scientists and specialists who belong to research units that generate important programs and projects requested by the productive sector. in relation to the opinion of students, they indicated that their courses promoted ethical and moral values and developed abilities and skills; that professors understand and transmit adequately course contents, are up to date and occasionally apply didactic material; however that university infrastructure was weak, prohibiting academic development. the conclusion is that it is necessary to orient action towards maintaining quality in basic university functions, integrating all the actors in the institution and their interaction with the external ambient, contributing in this manner to successfully inserting the university in an environment which is more and more competitive and which requires continuous efficiency, efficacy and social effectiveness.
