Vegetation patterns and dynamics on a rock glacier in the Northern Apennines

Abstract: The vegetation colonizing a rock glacier in the north-western cirque of M. Giovo (Northern Apennines) was recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet method. Numerical methods were employed both to classify and to order the phytosociological relevés. Relevés were classified by average linkage based on the similarity ratio. Four main vegetation types were so identified. They were ecologically characterized by an indirect gradient analysis based on correspondence analysis. Furthermore, dynamic connections between vegetation types were hypothesized by principal component analysis. [es] Modelos de vegetación y dinámica en un glaciar rocoso de los Apeninos del Norte (Norte de Italia). Se ha muestreado, según el método fitosociológico de Braun-Blanquet, la colonización vegetal de un glaciar rocoso en el circo glaciar noroeste del M. Giovo (Norte de los Apeninos). Los muestreos han sido clasificados por métodos de análisis numérico. Se definen cuatro modelos de vegetación con la ayuda de la clasificación numérica. El estudio ecológico de los modelos de vegetación se ha realizado con la ayuda del análisis de correspondencias y se ha verificado con el empleo de los valores indicadores ecológicos de LANDOLT (1977). Las tendencias dinámicas de la vegetación se definen con el análisis de componentes principales. La végétation colonisant un glacier rocheux dans le cirque glaciaire nord-ouest du M. Giovo (Apennins du Nord) à été relevé selon le méthode phytosociologique. Les relevés ont été classifies et ordonnés par des méthodes d'analyse numérique. 4 types de végétation ont été définis a l'aide de la classification numérique. L'étude écologique des types de végétation à été réalisée par l'analyse des correspondances et vérifié avec l'emploi des valeurs indicatrices écologiques du Landolt. Les tendances dynamiques de la végétation ont été définis à l'aide de l'analyse en composantes principales.
Uncertainties due to imperfect knowledge of systematic effects: general considerations and approximate formulae

Abstract: Starting from considerations about meaning and subsequent use of asymmetric uncertainty intervals of experimental results, we review the issue of uncertainty propagation. We show that, using a probabilistic approach (the so-called Bayesian approach), all sources of uncertainty can be included in a logically consistent way. Practical formulae for the first moments of the probability distribution are derived up to second-order approximations.

Abstract: MRI and cerebral angiography.In a 36-year-old man, magnetic resonance im aging of the skull and cerebral angiography revealed left intracranial arteriovenous malformations. Follow-up observation of 27 years revealed no essential change of retinal and cerebral arteriovenous malformations. Additional congenital deficits in this patient were described.Patients with retinal arteriovenous malformations should be early examined with neuroradiological methods.The "congenital retinocephalofacial vascular malformation syndrome" ("CRC syndrome") is a sporadic disorder. This syndrome is defined by unilateral retinal, cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and vascular facial skin lesions.Bonnet, Dechaume and Blanc (1937) published this triad in two patients.Wyburn-Mason (1943) described the malformation of the eye, brain, and face as an entity. This combination of vascular malformations is therefore refered to as Bonnet-Dechaume-Blanc syndrome or Wyburn-Mason syndrome. We prefer to call this special form "congenital retinocephalofacial vascular malformation syndrome" ("CRC syndrome") (Schmidt et al. 2008). Bhattacharya et al. (2001) described 15 patients with different location of AVMs, mainly in the orbit, retina, and brain which they called arteriovenous metameric syndromes (CAMS), however only one of the 15 patients revealed the typical features of a CRC-syndrome.AVMs represent rare vascular changes in which a direct connection of major arterial and venous vessels without interposition of capillaries may lead to various complications such as thrombosis and vessel occlusion. AVMs are considered to be high-flow systems (Mansour et al. 1989). Abstract: GERDA is an experiment designed to look for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge-76. The experiment uses an array of high-purity germanium detectors, enriched in Ge-76, directly immersed in liquid argon. GERDA is presently operating eight enriched coaxial detectors (approximately 15 kg of Ge-76) and about 30 new custom-made enriched BEGe detectors will be deployed in the next phase (additional 20 kg of Ge-76). The paper describes the GERDA off-line analysis of the high-purity germanium detector data. Firstly we present the signal processing flow, focusing on the digital filters and on the algorithms used. Secondly we discuss the rejection of non-physical events and the data quality monitoring. The analysis is performed completely with the GERDA software framework (GELATIO), designed to support a multi-channel processing and to perform a modular analysis of digital signals.
The Spectrum of the 2+1 Dimensional Gauge Ising Model

Abstract: We present a high precision Monte Carlo study of the spectrum of the $Z_2$ gauge theory in $2+1$ dimensions in the strong coupling phase. Using state of the art Monte Carlo techniques we are able to accurately determine up to three masses in a single channel. We compare our results with the strong coupling expansion for the lightest mass and with results for the universal ratio $\sigma/m^2$ determined for the $\phi^4$-theory. Finally the whole spectrum is compared with that obtained from the Isgur-Paton flux tube model and the spectrum of the $2+1$ dimensional $SU(2)$ gauge theory. A remarkable agreement between the Ising and SU(2) spectra (except for the lowest mass state) is found.
Forward and inverse 2-D DCT architectures targeting HDTV for H.264/AVC video compression standard

Abstract: This paper presents the architecture and the VHDL design of the integer Two-Dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (2-D DCT) used in the H.264/AVC codecs. The forward and inverse 2-D DCT architectures were designed and their synthesis results mapped to Altera FPGAs are presented. The 2-D DCT calculation is performed by exploring the separability property, in such way, each 2-D DCT architecture is divided in two 1-D DCT calculations that are joined through a transpose buffer. The 1-D DCT transforms implemented and herein described are multiplierless, hence optimized shift-add operations are used. The architectures have a dedicated pipeline, optimized to process one input data per clock cycle. These architectures are able to cope with H.264/AVC encoder or decoder requirements targeting High Definition Digital Television (HDTV), with 1920x1080 pixel/frame at 30 frames per second.
A process-based model for the definition of hydrological alert systems in landslide risk mitigation

Abstract: The definition of hydrological alert systems for rainfall-induced landslides is strongly related to a deep knowledge of the geological and geomorphological features of the territory. Climatic conditions, spatial and temporal evolution of the phenomena and characterization of landslide triggering, together with propagation mechanisms, are the key elements to be considered. Critical steps for the development of the systems consist of the identification of the hydrological variable related to landslide triggering and of the minimum rainfall threshold for landslide occurrence. In this paper we report the results from a process-based model to define a hydrological alert system for the Val di Maso Landslide, located in the northeastern Italian Alps and included in the Vicenza Province (Veneto region, NE Italy). The instability occurred in November 2010, due to an exceptional rainfall event that hit the Vicenza Province and the entire NE Italy. Up to 500 mm in 3-day cumulated rainfall generated large flood conditions and triggered hundreds of landslides. During the flood, the Soil Protection Division of the Vicenza Province received more than 500 warnings of instability phenomena. The complexity of the event and the high level of risk to infrastructure and private buildings are the main reasons for deepening the specific phenomenon occurred at Val di Maso. Empirical and physically-based models have been used to identify the minimum rainfall threshold for the occurrence of instability phenomena in the crown area of Val di Maso landslide, where a retrogressive evolution by multiple rotational slides is expected. Empirical models helped in the identification and in the evaluation of recurrence of critical rainfall events, while physically-based modelling was essential to verify the effects on the slope stability of determined rainfall depths. Empirical relationships between rainfall and landslide consist of the calculation of rainfall Depth-Duration-Frequency (DDF) curves, which allow one to determine rainfall depth (or intensity) as a function of duration for given return periods or probabilities of exceedance (frequencies). Physically-based modelling was performed through coupled seepage and slope stability analyses. Combining results from empirical and physically-based modelling, the minimum alert threshold for a reactivation of the phenomenon was found in rainfall cumulated up to 60 days with a return period of 2 yr. GELATIO: a general framework for modular digital analysis of high-purity Ge detector signals

Abstract: GELATIO is a new software framework for advanced data analysis and digital signal processing developed for the GERDA neutrinoless double beta decay experiment. The framework is tailored to handle the full analysis flow of signals recorded by high purity Ge detectors and photo-multipliers from the veto counters. It is designed to support a multi-channel modular and flexible analysis, widely customizable by the user either via human-readable initialization files or via a graphical interface. The framework organizes the data into a multi-level structure, from the raw data up to the condensed analysis parameters, and includes tools and utilities to handle the data stream between the different levels. GELATIO is implemented in C++. It relies upon ROOT and its extension TAM, which provides compatibility with PROOF, enabling the software to run in parallel on clusters of computers or many-core machines. It was tested on different platforms and benchmarked in several GERDA-related applications. A stable version is presently available for the GERDA Collaboration and it is used to provide the reference analysis of the experiment data.

Abstract: Este trabalho busca o t o explorado universo dos africanos escravizados que serviram de m o-de-obra no império, e, mais especificamente, no Rio de Janeiro do século XIX. Que houve resistência a escravid o n o resta a menor dúvida, e isso a história vem mostrando nos mais variados aspectos da vida do escravo através de fontes escritas e orais. A nossa proposta é tentar identificar arqueologicamente estratégias dessa resistência, levantando a importancia do estudo de símbolos criados e dinamizados pelo contingente escravo. Considerando que este contingente era formado por uma grande variedade de grupos étnicos distintos que foram aqui misturados, procuramos perceber como se deu a manuten o de tra os étnicos e uma conseqüente reelabora o do sentimento de identidade. Para isto, os vestígios arqueológicos relacionados diretamente aos escravos podem vir a dar uma nova contribui o. Neste caso, nossa análise se concen-trou em cachimbos ceramicos decorados encontrados em sítios arqueológicos históricos referentes ao período. This work searches for the so explored enslaved African universe that served as manual work in the empire, and, more specifically, in the XIX century in Rio de Janeiro. History has been showing, through oral and written sources, that there was undoubtedly some resistance to slavery. Our proposal is archeolo-gically try to identify strategies of that resistance, raising the importance of the study or the symbols created and dynamized by the slave contingent. Conside-ring that this contingent was formed by a great variety of different ethinic groups that were joined here, we tried to notice how ethic aspects were kept and the consequent restitution of the feeling of identify. In order to do that, we consider that archaelogical vestiges, directly related to the slaves, can give a new contri-bution. In this case, our analysis concentrated on ceramic pipes found at histori-cal archaeological sites of that period.
