Abstract: the students's affiliation to a university takes place when s/he demonstrates that s/he can be an autonomous reader and a competent writer of academic discourse. although one of the most required pieces of writing in this context is the report, university students usually present/display difficulties to face this task. on the other hand, it is a little frequent that teachers give precise and explicit directions to guide the writing process. the objective of this article is to present/display the results of the implementation of a guideline checklist created to evaluate the most relevant aspects that a university report must take into account. the sample corresponded to 17 reports produced by students in the speciality subjetcs of two majors from universidad católica de la santísima concepción. the guideline checklist consisted of 24 indicators, 9 dimensions and 4 quality categories. the results demonstrate the use of the textual reproduction of fragments from the sources, neglecting the information processing, required to create autonomous, intentional texts that (re)construct knowledge.

Studies of discourse genre have paid little attention to graduation theses produced by undergraduate students. This article describes, from a genre analysis approach (Swales, 1990), the rhetorical organization of the reference framework of a set of 30 undergraduate theses prepared by social work students at the UCSC. The study identifies four rhetorical moves: theoretical, conceptual, empirical, and normative. It is observed that each move has different purposes on theoretical, practical, and legal issues related to the social problem addressed by each thesis. The presence of recursive rhetorical steps is apparent, along with a strong commitment to solving real social problems through research.

Abstract: background: non alcoholic fatty liver disease (nafld) is associated to diabetes mellitus, obesity, disturbances in serum lipid levels, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. aim: to assess glucose tolerance and the presence of metabolic syndrome among patients with biopsy proven nafld. patients and methods: serum lipid levels, hepatic function tests were measured and an oral glucose tolerance test was performed in 46 patients (mean age 45±12 years, 36 females) without history of diabetes mellitus and with steatosis in a liver biopsy. results: mean body mass index of the sample was 37±12 kg/m2. seventeen percent had pure steatosis, 78% had steatohepatitis with or without fibrosis and 50% had fibrosis in the liver biopsy. glucose intolerance and diabetes was found in 57% and 15% of cases, respectively. the presence of steatohepatitis was higher in diabetics, compared with subjects with glucose intolerance or a normal glucose response (43, 38 and 8%, respectively, p <0.0001). ninety three percent had a metabolic syndrome and the proportion of biopsies with fibrosis was higher among subjects with more than three diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome compared with those with three or less criteria (59 and 46%, respectively, p <0.05). conclusions: glucose intolerance, diabetes and metabolic syndrome are common among patients with nafld, even when they are not obese

Facts and Perceptions Regarding Software Measurement in Education and in Practice: Preliminary Results  [PDF]
Mónica Villavicencio, Alain Abran
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2011.44025
Abstract: How is software measurement addressed in undergraduate and graduate programs in universities? Do organizations consider that the graduating students they hire have an adequate knowledge of software measurement? To answer these and related questions, a survey was administered to participants who attended the IWSM-MENSURA 2010 conference in Stuttgart, Germany. Forty-seven of the 69 conference participants (including software development practitioners, software measurement consultants, university professors, and graduate students) took part in the survey. The results indicate that software measurement topics are: 1) covered mostly at the graduate level and not at the undergraduate level, and 2) not mandatory. Graduate students and professors consider that, of the measurement topics covered in university curricula, specific topics, such as measures for the requirements phase, and measurement techniques and tools, receive more attention in the academic context. A common observation of the practitioners who participated in the survey was that students hired as new employees bring limited software measurement-related knowledge to their organizations. Discussion of the findings and directions for future research are presented.
Relevance of Epistemological Pluralism for Resource Management Policies  [PDF]
Mónica Gómez Salazar
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2015.56039
Abstract: The common believe of a single successful form of knowing the reality is misleading. A brief analysis of many human activities reveals a pluralistic perspective of several coexisting conceptual schemes that underlie the form in which women and men know and constitute the world in which we live. Here, I will discuss the necessity of taking seriously this pluralistic perspective when developing conceptual frameworks of human activities. As an example of great interest and importance, I will consider the case of resource management that has to contemplate the conservation and the response of ecosystems to human activities that may lead to irreversible damage. Ecosystems’ activity occurs over a wide range of space and time scales and, hence, policies and proposals of solutions to ecological problems should avoid narrow and monochromatic approaches. Specifically, the Pemon perspective of fire is a good example to show that for more robust and flexible resource management we need the knowledge and experience of different cultural and disciplinary groups.

Abstract: the therapeutic options for treatment of achalasia of the esophagus include medical treatment, endoscopic and surgical procedures. the latter can be either conservative, such as cardiomyotomy or more aggressive, such as cardioplasty or esophageal resection. in this article, we discuss the early and long term results after the different therapeutic options. we also present the results of our recent surgical experience. the definitive results seem to be better after surgical treatment compared to medical management or endoscopic procedures (rev méd chile 2002; 130. 1055-66).
