International Co-operation between Firms on Innovation and R&D: Empirical Evidence from Argentina and Spain

Abstract: this paper examines co-operative innovation and research and development (r&d) behaviour between argentine and spanish firms. based on theoretical perspectives from the literature, we present empirical evidence obtained from 104 firms of patterns of cooperation in several processes and out-puts, highlighting firm characteristics, the motives of the collaborating parties, types of partners, r&d and innovation activities, leadership, and obstacles to cooperation. our results reveal that the determinants of success differ considerably among countries depending on the sector, the firm specific characteristics and funding. these differences have important implications for public policy and instruments to support r&d and innovation activities.

Abstract: inter-firm cooperation is experiencing strong growth worldwide. this paper aims at analyzing this phenomenon considering the cooperation relationships on r&d and innovation between argentine and spanish firms. from the literature review, we surveyed a sample of 540 companies believed to have participated in cooperative projects, obtaining 104 responses. we analyzed various aspects of the process and cooperation results (firm profiles, patterns of cooperation, type of partners, leadership, agreement types, frequency, innovation activities and obstacles to cooperation). the results show that cooperation is not easy, but in contrast to the literature, it can be carried out by smes in high and medium technological sectors whose motives are primarily an opportunity for access to new markets and improved commercialization, rather than carrying out innovation activities. this has important implications for policies to support r&d and innovation, which would take into account the differences that affect cooperation in both countries according to the firms' size, the specific sector of activity and the funding conditions.

Abstract: Recognizing the urgent need of a scientific education thet would provide for citizen participation in decision making regarding problems that affect our survival, this paper reports teachers perceptions about problems that affect the future of human kind and life in our planet. Taking as reference recent studies which approach this issue globally, we analyse science teachers conceptions concerning the present world situation. Results show a fragmentary character and an insufficient conscientization of the extent and serioussness of the problems. This finding points at the need of formative actions that would provide teachers with a more adequate perspection of those problems and of possible solutions.
Ecompetentis: una herramienta para la evaluación de competencias genéricas

Abstract: Una competencia es genérica si no está directamente relacionada con los conocimientos de la carrera en la que se imparte, pero se considera importante para la educación del alumnado. Suelen recibir el nombre de competencias transversales porque no tienen una asignatura propia, sino que se adquieren a lo largo de las otras asignaturas. El problema principal es que desconocemos cómo ense ar estas competencias y cómo integrarlas en nuestra docencia. Una forma de resolver esta dificultad es con el esfuerzo colaborativo de todos los profesores: casi todos tenemos alguna experiencia o hemos trabajado alguna de estas competencias en clase. Para facilitar la inclusión y evaluación de competencias transversales en la docencia, hemos creado un repositorio de actividades que pueden usarse en asignaturas concretas. Este repositorio permite que los profesores con más experiencia compartan con los menos experimentados las actividades que han creado para impartir comunicación oral y escrita, trabajo en equipo, uso de idiomas extranjeros, etc. Accediendo al repositorio cualquier profesor encontrará actividades concretas que se ajusten a su asignatura, método docente y circunstancias. Algunas las podrán utilizar directamente, otras requerirán peque as adaptaciones. Este repositorio permite que con poco esfuerzo cualquier profesor pueda introducir competencias transversales en su docencia. ABSTRACT Ecompetentis: a tool for evaluation of generic competences. One of the aims of the project "Development of eCompetentis tool for assessing generic competences" (EA2009-0040) funded by the Ministry of Education and Science, was to develop a website (http://www.ecompetentis.es) which has been conceived to be a support framework for Spanish professors. This framework could help them develop generic competences regarding their teaching activities and assess their students. As far as generic competences is concerned, this website offers: assessing tools, innovation and investigation projects and successful experiences, among other tools. At present, the website included tools for the assessment of the generic competences “teamwork” and “problem solving”. However, eCompetentis has been presented as a collaboration space and would soon provide some other tools, projects and experiences of colleagues who are interested in participating.

Abstract: La cooperación inter-empresas está experimentando una fuerte expansión a nivel internacional. El presente trabajo pretende profundizar en este fenómeno, considerando las relaciones de cooperación en I+D e innovación entre empresas argentinas y espa olas. A partir de la revisión de la bibliografía, se implementó una encuesta a una muestra de 540 empresas susceptibles de haber participado en proyectos de cooperación, obteniendo 104 respuestas. Se analizaron diversos aspectos relativos al proceso y los resultados de la cooperación (perfil de las empresas, motivos, tipos de socios, liderazgo, tipos de acuerdo, frecuencia, actividades llevadas a cabo y obstáculos a la cooperación). Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la cooperación no es fácil, aunque contrariamente a lo que sostiene gran parte de la literatura, puede ser llevada a cabo por PYMEs de sectores de alta o media intensidad tecnológica cuyos motivos son principalmente la oportunidad de acceso a nuevos mercados y la mejora de la comercialización, más que la realización de actividades de innovación. Esto tiene importantes implicaciones para las políticas de apoyo a la I+D y la innovación, que habrían de tener en cuenta las diferencias que afectan a la cooperación en ambos países de acuerdo al tama o de las empresas, el sector específico de actividad y las condiciones de financiación. Abstract: the literature about science teachers' training program hasn't properly explored the world's situation regarded to a global perception of its serious present problems. this article consists basically of a program of activities to be developed in partnership with graduated and graduating teachers, which aims to stimulate a group reflection over those matters. under this perspective, a group of references and questions is indicated for a debate based on many factors connected to life's degradation and possible decisions to be taken in order to face the planetary emergency. primary studies about the use of the proposed program have shown auspicious results regarding the perception that the scientific education can contribute to the thinking and building the future towards a better life quality.
Strong Words or Moderate Words: A Comparison of the Reliability and Validity of Responses on Attitude Scales  [PDF]

Abstract: A common assumption in attitude measurement is that items should be composed of strongly worded statements. The presumed benefit of strongly worded statements is that they produce more reliable and valid scores than statements with moderate or weak wording. This study tested this assumption using commonly accepted criteria for reliability and validity. Two forms of attitude scales were created - a strongly worded form and a moderately worded form - measuring two attitude objects - attitude towards animal experimentation and attitude towards going to the movies. Different formats were randomly administered to samples of graduate students. There was no superiority found for strongly worded statements over moderately worded statements. The only statistically significant difference was found between one pair of validity coefficients (r = 0.69; r = 0.15; Z = 2.60, p ≤ 0.01) and that was in the direction opposite from expected, favoring moderately worded items over strongly worded items (total scores correlated with a general behavioral item).

Abstract: hybrid planar waveguides were prepared from ti4+-acetylacetone (acac)-ureasil sols deposited on glass substrates. structural features have been investigated by spectroscopic measurements (fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ftir), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (xps) and raman scattering) and small angle x-ray scattering (saxs). addition of ti4+-acac to the ureasil (ti:si molar ratio 1:1) leads to the formation of bonds between the ti complex and the siloxane groups, whereas further addition of ti4+ (ti:si molar ratio 5:1) leads to the additional formation of titanium-rich nanoclusters. the optical parameters of the waveguides such as refractive index, thickness, propagating modes and attenuation coefficient were measured at 632.8, 543.5 and 1550 nm by the prism coupling technique. the refractive index can be tuned by the ti4+ relative content. the few microns thick planar waveguides support well confined propagating modes with low attenuation loss for all compositions.
Simulation of land surface temperatures: comparison of two climate models and satellite retrievals

Abstract: Recently there has been significant progress in the retrieval of land surface temperature from satellite observations. Satellite retrievals of surface temperature offer several advantages, including broad spatial coverage, and such data are potentially of great value in assessing general circulation models of the atmosphere. Here, retrievals of the land surface temperature over the contiguous United States are compared with simulations from two climate models. It is found that these two models generally simulate the diurnal range of surface temperature realistically, but show significant warm biases during the summer. The models' diurnal cycle of surface temperature is related to their surface flux budgets. Differences in the diurnal cycle of the surface flux budget between the models are found to be more pronounced than those in the diurnal cycle of surface temperature.
