Abstract: background: during the perioperative period an adequate intravascular volume must be maintained. current recommendations overestimate perioperative volume requirements. aim: to compare perioperative volume administration using standard monitoring methods or guided by left ventricular filling parameters. material and methods: twenty-four patients subjected to colon resection were randomized to monitoring by electrocardiography, blood and central venous pressure, or by transesophageal echocardiography. in the latter, volume administration was adjusted to maintain basal values of left ventricular end diastolic volume and cardiac index. results: patients with the standard monitoring system and transesophageal echocardiographic monitoring received 21.1±12 and 6.3 ± 2 ml/kg/h of fluids during the perioperative period, respectively (p < 0.01). conclusions: the use of transesophageal echocardiography significantly reduced the perioperative fluid administration.

Abstract: background: foodborne disease outbreaks are one of the main health problems all over the world, which have an extensive impact on human health. objetive: to analyze the foodborne disease outbreaks occurred in chilean urban area from 2005 to 2010. methods: we made a descriptive epidemiologic study. first, criteria were defined and classified according to previous epidemiologic investigations, clinical and environment samples, then. variables of space, time, place and person were also analyzed. results: among 2,806 reported outbreaks, 2434 (86.7%) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. incidence rate of the period (2005-2010) were 32 cases per 100 inhabitants. a total of 12,196 people were affected, with an average of 5 patients per outbreak. the households (36.2%), restaurants (16.3%), supermarkets (6.3%) free fair (4.4%) have been the most important outbreak areas. the foods involved were seafood (15.4%), fish (15.1%), and fast food (13.5%). the etiologic agents were salmonella spp, shigella spp, vibrio parahaemolyticus. conclusions: outbreaks foodborne diseases are frequents in the chilean urban area, which make vulnerable a lot of people. the largest numbers happened in the households and were due to bad handling and/or inappropriate storage of the foods.

Abstract: The Method Of Lines (MOL) and Scheifele’s G-functions in the design of algorithms adapted for the numeric integration of parabolic Partial Differential Equations (PDE) in one space dimension are applied. The semi-discrete system of ordinary differential equations in the time direction, obtained by applying the MOL to PDE, is solved with the use of a method of Adapted Series, based on Scheifele’s G-functions. This method integrates exactly unperturbed linear systems of ordinary differential equations, with only one G-function. An implementation of this algorithm is used to approximate the solution of two test problems proposed by various authors. The results obtained by the Dufort-Frankel, Crank-Nicholson and the methods of Adapted Series versus the analytical solution, show the results of mistakes made.

Abstract: antidepressants are effective in treating depression in the elderly. treatment response depends on the type and severity of depression, comorbidities, efficacy and tolerability of antidepressants, patient education and treatment compliance. the aging process leads to physiological changes that, in association with concomitant diseases and use of several medications, render the elderly person more vulnerable to the adverse effects of antidepressants and an increased risk of drug interactions. it is very important that psychiatrists treating elderly patients be aware of possible adverse effects and drug interactions of different antidepressants. this paper reviews data on the efficacy and safety of antidepressant agents currently available for the treatment of the elderly, and includes information about the treatment of specific populations such as physically frail patients and dementia adults.
