This paper presents the results of the research project "The Effectiveness of Judicial Contempt Power in Writ of Protection Cases. A Case Study, Bogotá (2007)". Its purpose is to identify and analyze the variables that influence the effectiveness of contempt requests in terms of the satisfaction of fundamental rights. In order to do so, the research intended to have a quantitative approach with exploratory boundaries. The project examined a total of 431 files in criminal, civil, administrative, labor and family courts in Bogota in 2007. The study shows an overview of ineffectiveness of the legal instrument and the need for its reform, together with the development of new tools to promote compliance based on different theoretical perspectives.

Open Journal of Ophthalmology (OJOph) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojoph.2012.24026
Abstract: Purpose: To describe the clinical, angiographic, and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) findings in a patient with Unilateral Acute Idiopathic Maculopathy (UAIM) and to discuss a possible pattern of OCT findings in patients with this disease. Methods: Case report. Results: A 34-year-old man with UAIM was evaluated. During the acute phase fundus examination revealed a yellow thickening in the macular area of the right eye, Fluorescein Angiography (FA) showed early alternating patches of hypofluorescence and hyperfluorescence and late hyperfluorescence and OCT showed thickening of the outer retina in the foveal zone. Six weeks later, the macula had pigmentary mottling, FA showed an area of central hypofluorescence surrounded by a hyperfluorescent ring that remained unchanged during the angiogram and the OCT examination was normal. Conclusion: OCT is a useful diagnostic tool for UAIM. OCT evaluation of patients with this disease will exhibit the heterogeneous hyperreflectivity and thickening of the outer retina and Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE). A serous macular detachment may not be a prominent finding in UAIM.
Experimental conditions affect the outcome of Plasmodium falciparum platelet-mediated clumping assays

Malaria Journal , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1475-2875-7-243
Abstract: The effects of Pt (1, 4 and 12%), Ht (2, 5 and 10%) and time (15 min, 30 min, 1 h, 2 h) on the clumping of P. falciparum clone HB3 were examined. The effects of platelet freshness and parasite maturity were also studied. At low Ht (2%), the Pt of the culture has a large effect on clumping, with significantly higher clumping occurring at 12% Pt (mean 47% of IE in clumps) compared to 4% Pt (mean 26% IE in clumps) or 1% Pt (mean 7% IE in clumps) (ANOVA, p = 0.0004). Similarly, at low Pt (1%), the Ht of the culture has a large effect on clumping, with significantly higher clumping occurring at 10% Ht (mean 62% IE in clumps) compared to 5% Ht (mean 25% IE in clumps) or 2% Ht (mean 10% IE in clumps) (ANOVA, p = 0.0004). Combinations of high Ht and high Pt were impractical because of the difficulty assessing clumping in densely packed IE and the rapid formation of enormous clumps that could not be counted accurately. There was no significant difference in clumping when fresh platelets were used compared to platelets stored at 4°C for 10 days. Clumping was a property of mature pigmented-trophozoites and schizonts but not ring stage parasites. The Pt and Ht at which in vitro clumping assays are set up have a profound effect on the outcome. All previous field isolate studies on clumping and malaria severity suffer from potential problems in experimental design and methodology. Future studies of clumping should use standardized conditions and control for Pt, and should take into account the limitations and variability inherent in the assay.Plasmodium parasites causing malaria are responsible for 300–500 million infections annually. Among the four species that infect humans, Plasmodium falciparum causes the majority of infections in Africa and is responsible for most severe disease and mortality [1,2]. The clinical outcome of P. falciparum infection is very diverse; some infections are asymptomatic, others develop into uncomplicated febrile disease, while 1–2% of infections cause

PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0055453
Abstract: Platelet-mediated clumping of Plasmodium falciparum infected erythrocytes (IEs) is a frequently observed parasite adhesion phenotype. The importance of clumping in severe malaria and the molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon are incompletely understood. Three platelet surface molecules have previously been identified as clumping receptors: CD36, globular C1q receptor (gC1qR/HABP1/p32), and P-selectin (CD62P), but the parasite ligands mediating this phenotype are unknown. The aim of this work was to develop a selection method to facilitate investigations of the molecular mechanisms of clumping in selected P. falciparum lines. Magnetic beads coated with anti-platelet antibodies were used to positively and negatively select clumping IEs from P. falciparum strains IT, HB3, 3D7 and Dd2. Clumping in all four positively selected parasite lines was abolished by antibodies to CD36, but was not affected by antibodies to gC1qR or P-selectin. Clumping positive lines showed significantly higher binding to CD36 than clumping negative lines in flow adhesion assays (strains IT, HB3 and 3D7, p<0.05 for all strains, paired t test) and static assays (strain Dd2, p<0.0001 paired t test). However, clumping negative lines IT, HB3 and 3D7 did show some binding to CD36 under flow conditions, indicating that CD36-binding is not sufficient for clumping. These data show that CD36-dependent clumping positive and negative lines can easily be selected from P. falciparum laboratory strains. CD36-binding is necessary but not sufficient for clumping, and the molecular differences between clumping positive and negative parasite lines responsible for the phenotype require further investigation.

Abstract: the improvement of microbiological information processing in clinical laboratories depends on retention of information concerning who, what, when, how, and why each process was performed, the implementation of quality control procedures, and finally, its evaluation. the four objectives to be addressed are as follows: (1) to improve the collection of information concerned with microbiological processes, (2) to evaluate results of implemented strategies, (3) to offer a model data base to be used in research projects, and (4) to propose an evaluation model for comparative studies. to do this, microbiological cultures were collected from hospitalized patients from june 1997 to june 2003. data for the analytical matrix were obtained from lab requests, medical history and the microbiological data. statistical analyses were performed in epi-info 6. the laboratory records for 46,072 microbiological cultures were analyzed. completion levels in data collection were compared between years 1997 and 2003. samples from 1997 and 2003 showed 11% and 99% of the request forms specifically requesting microbiological culture, 11% and 99% were completed in 1997 and 2003, respectively. for the same years, 9% and 85% specifically stated the time of the request. ten percent and 68%, respectively, provided complete information. zero and 83% respectively stated who had collected the sample. zero and 77%, respectively, specified the time of sample collection. forms containing all relevent microbiological data were most complete with 78% and 96%, respectively. a database with 44 variables related to microbiological processes was created. in conclusion, improvement of microbiological data processing depends not only on the method of collection and completion of recorded information, but also on constant quality control and evaluation.

Abstract: In most studies of fecal leukocyte counts as predictors of the result of stool cultures the sensitivity and specificity were not determined. Objective: to evaluate fecal leukocyte counts as a predictor of the presence of Salmonella and Shigella. Design: a descriptive, cross section study was carried out in 905 stool cultures at a university hospital in Medellín, Colombia. Results for Salmonella and Shigella were taken as the gold standard to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of fecal leukocyte counts. Results: sensitivity and specificity, according to the level of the count, were, respectively: 1-5 leukocytes: 89.2% and 57.1%; 6-10 leukocytes: 86.2% and 52.8%;11-20 leukocytes: 77.7% and 62.7%; 21-30 leukocytes: 63.9% and 76.3%; 31-50 leukocytes: 45.2% and 85.5%; more than 50 leukocytes: 28.3% and 90.9%. The area under the curve was 0.7699 (CI 95%: 0.7275-0.8123). Conclusions: sensitivity decreased and specificity increased with higher counts of fecal leukocytes. Low specificity with the lesser values of leukocyte counts may be due to either the presence of enteroinvasive pathogens other than Salmonella and Shigella, or to non-infectious diarrheal disease.
