Open Journal of Immunology (OJI) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/oji.2016.63008
Abstract: Ageing is associated with several anatomical and physiological changes of the organism, and the increase in global elderly population promotes the research to develop strategies to improve their quality of life. In this work, we characterized the immunological alterations naturally produced during aging in a mice model, and evaluated the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus (L.) rhamnosus CRL1505 administration on those immunological parameters. We demonstrated that L. rhamosus CRL1505 was able to improve peritoneal macrophages phagocytic activity, and the number of intestinal IgA+ cells in aged mice, reaching values of those parameters similar to young adult mice. The results of this work indicate that is plausible that the immunobiotic CRL1505 strain may find applications as a beneficial immunomodulator in aging to reinforce the intestinal and systemic immunity. The immune modulation in aging induced by L. rhamnosus CRL1505 could lead to the development of new strategies for functional foods specifically tailored for the elderly.

Tamehiro, Claudia Yurika;Alfieri, Alice Fernandes;Médici, Cristina;Alfieri, Amauri Alcindo;
Brazilian Journal of Microbiology , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-83822003000400013
Abstract: segmented double-stranded rna (dsrna) viruses were identified by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (page) technique in fecal samples from broiler chicken. a total of 378 fecal samples from 1-7 weeks old chickens were analyzed. dsrna with migration profile characteristic of avian rotavirus (avrv), reovirus (arv) or picobirnavirus (pbv) was identified in 32 (8.5%), 7 (1.8%) and 13 (3.4%) samples, respectively. avrv and arv occurred more frequently in chickens up to 1 month old and were related with enteritis signs. considering only fecal samples of chickens with diarrhea, the avrv was detected in 37.8% (14/37) and the arv in 13.5% (5/37) of analyzed samples. avrv was identified in only 1.5% (4/274) and arv was not detected in normal feces collected from assymptomatic chickens (controls). pbv dsrna was detected in broiler chickens from two to seven weeks old, more frequently in feces with pasty consistency. the avrv showed great electrophoretic profile variability in the dsrna segments and nine different electropherotypes were identified. variation in genome pattern was not observed in either arv or pbv.

Claus, Marlise Pompeo;Alfieri, Alice Fernandes;Médici, Kerlei Cristina;Lunardi, Michele;Alfieri, Amauri Alcindo;
Brazilian Journal of Microbiology , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-83822007000300019
Abstract: bovine herpesvirus 5 (bohv-5) is an important cause of meningoencephalitis in young and adult cattle. the multiple etiology of neurological disturbances in cattle makes the quick and conclusive diagnosis of bohv-5 infection important for animal and public health, mainly because of herbivore rabies that is endemic in brazilian cattle herds. the objective of this retrospective study was to use a multiplex-polymerase chain reaction (multiplex-pcr) for bohv-5 and bohv-1 glycoprotein c gene detection from stored central nervous system (cns) tissue fragments of cattle with neurological clinical signs. forty-seven frozen cns samples of young and adult cattle from 31 herds in three brazilian geographical regions (south, southeast, and center-west) were evaluated. eighteen (38.3%) of these cns samples were bohv-positive by virus isolation in cell culture. by multiplex-pcr 30 (63.8%) cns samples were bohv-5 positive. all 18 positive samples by virus isolation were confirmed as bohv-5 by the multiplex-pcr, that provided a increase of 25.5% (12/47) in the bohv-5 diagnosis rate. bohv-1 was not detected in any cns sample. this retrospective study demonstrated the wide regional distribution of bohv-5 infection in brazilian cattle herds since positive results were obtained in cns samples of cattle with neurological disease from paraná, s?o paulo, minas gerais, mato grosso, and mato grosso do sul states.

Abstract: crushed stone mining is the third largest mining economy in brazil, where almost half is produced in the sao paulo metropolitan region. the segment registers the highest number of accidents among the extractive industries, which justifies the concern with workers’ health and safety and the importance of controlling occupational hazards. since 2002, the nr-22 standard (nr-22: occupational health and safety in mining) makes compulsory the elaboration of a risk management program that identifies risks and establishes control measures. considering the crushed stone mining industry’s importance to the state, this paper evaluates and discusses the risks identified in unit operations during the production process of crushed stone in an open pit mine in order to propose control measures for the development of the risk management program. although this study refers to a specific quarry, it can be applied to other mines from the same sector, since some considerations are made regarding differences in manufacturing processes. the research was based on the identification of the main risks associated with drilling, blasting, load & haulage, crushing and screening through field measurements of some hazardous agents, together with company reports. the results contributed to the choice of the appropriate control measures for the improvement of workers’ health and safety conditions.
