Geografares , 2008,
Abstract: O presente artigo aborda as representa es sociais da pobreza urbana no Brasil.

Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1088/0957-4484/26/4/045707
Abstract: We investigate -- through simulations and analytical calculations -- the consequences of uniaxial lateral compression applied to the upper layer of few-layer graphene. The simulations of compressed graphene show that strains larger than 2.8 \% induce soliton-like deformations that further develop into large, mobile folds. Such folds were indeed experimentally observed in graphene and other solid lubricants two-dimensional materials. Interestingly, in the soliton-fold regime the shear stress decreases with the strain s, initially as $s^{-2/3}$ and rapidly going to zero. Such instability is consistent with the recently observed negative dynamic compressibility of two-dimensional materials. We also predict that the curvatures of the soliton-folds are given by $r_c = \delta\sqrt{\beta/2\alpha},$ where $1\le \delta \le2,$ and $\beta$ and $\alpha$ are respectively related to the layer bending modulus and to the exfoliation energy of the material. This finding might allow experimental estimates of the $\beta/\alpha$ ratio of two-dimensional materials from fold morphology.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of EIPH in vaquejada horses via endoscopy and tracheal lavage and citology. We used eight Quarter-mile horses that usually perform at vaquejadas. Clinical examination was carried out before the race. After the race, endoscopy and tracheal lavage with 20 ml of saline via the service channel of the endoscope were performed. The samples were sent to the laboratory for processing and confection of the slides. Of the eight horses (four pull and four helper horses), six had hemosiderophages in their tracheal aspirates, confirming the existence of pulmonary hemorrhage after exercise. No difference was observed between the analyzed parameters between the two groups of vaquejada horses (P > 0.05). Tracheal lavage and endoscopy can be used for evaluating this important disease in animal athletes.

Geografares , 2012,
Abstract: A chuva exerce papel fundamental na manuten o do ciclo hidrológico.

Abstract: research on b availability in soils is essential to assess the crops response to different concentrations of available b in soils. a greenhouse experiment was carried out aiming at studying the corn plant (zea mays) response to b doses (0, 2, 4, 6, and 12 mg dm-3) applied to ten soils from the state of pernambuco, brazil. available b was assessed by three extractants: hot water, hcl 0.05 mol l-1, and mehlich-1. the critical and toxic levels were determined in soils and plants. additionally, b toxicity symptoms in corn plants were recorded. results showed that the critical and toxic b levels in soils ranged from 0.4 to 2.3 mg kg-1 and from 1.8 to 8.3 mg kg-1, respectively. for corn plants, the critical levels varied from 13.8 to 129.6 mg kg-1 and the toxic levels from 43.3 to 372.2 mg kg-1. hcl 0.05 mol l-1 was the extractant that best correlated with the b plant content, followed by mehlich-1 and hot water. both available b assessed by hcl and b plant contents were inversely related to clay and organic matter concentrations in soils. soils on which plants with highest b contents grew presented the most acute b toxicity symptoms. this was associated with sandy and low organic matter soils.
ST3Gal.I sialyltransferase relevance in bladder cancer tissues and cell lines

BMC Cancer , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2407-9-357
Abstract: Matched samples of urothelium and tumor tissue, and four bladder cancer cell lines were screened for: ST3Gal.I, ST3Gal.II and ST3Gal.IV mRNA level by real-time PCR. Sialyl-T antigen was detected by dot blot and flow cytometry using peanut lectin. Sialyltransferase activity was measured against the T antigen in the cell lines. In nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancers, ST3Gal.I mRNA levels were significantly higher than corresponding urothelium (p < 0.001) and this increase was twice more pronounced in cancers with tendency for recurrence. In muscle-invasive cancers and matching urothelium, ST3Gal.I mRNA levels were as elevated as nonmuscle-invasive cancers. Both non-malignant bladder tumors and corresponding urothelium showed ST3Gal.I mRNA levels lower than all the other specimen groups. A good correlation was observed in bladder cancer cell lines between the ST3Gal.I mRNA level, the ST activity (r = 0.99; p = 0.001) and sialyl-T antigen expression, demonstrating that sialylation of T antigen is attributable to ST3Gal.I. The expression of sialyl-T antigens was found in patients' bladder tumors and urothelium, although without a marked relationship with mRNA level. The two ST3Gal.I transcript variants were also equally expressed, independently of cell phenotype or malignancy.ST3Gal.I plays the major role in the sialylation of the T antigen in bladder cancer. The overexpression of ST3Gal.I seems to be part of the initial oncogenic transformation of bladder and can be considered when predicting cancer progression and recurrence.Bladder cancer is one of the most common cancers in humans and its incidence has been increasing during the past years [1]. 70-80% of all bladder cancers are nonmuscle-invasive and have a low mortality rate. However, despite the complete resection of the primary lesion, and the success of treatments such as the intravesical instillation with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) [2], 30-50% of patients with nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer experience recur

Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542008000600021
Abstract: the leaching of thiamethoxam in two brazilian soils, a typic acriferric red latosol (lvwf) and a typic dystrophic red-yellow argisol (pvad), was investigated in macrolysimeters (1.0 m diameter and depth of 0.45, 0.90 and 1.80 m) of undisturbed material of the soils, which were kept without vegetation and under field conditions. the insecticide was applied at the beginning of the rainy season, using the formulation actara 250 w?, which was diluted in 100 ml of water and applied on the lysimeters surface. the water percolated through the lysimeters was collected until the end of rainy season of the following year, with samples being taken for determination of thiamethoxam concentration, performed by hplc. the results showed a high mobility of thiamethoxam in both soils, with more intense leaching of the compound in the pvad than in the lvwf. the total amounts of thiamethoxam leached below 0.45 m were equivalent to 53.8 and 19.4% of the applied amount, respectively for the pvad and lvwf. thiamethoxam residues were also found in the water collected from the 0.90 and 1.80 m lysimeters of both soils. these results indicate a high potential of thiamethoxam leaching under practical conditions of its use in the studied soils, despite the lack of vegetation.
