Journal of technology management & innovation , 2008,
Abstract: This study presents a practical impact assessment method for the adoption of technology innovations at Pectens In vitro Fertilization Laboratory in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. To fulfill the system framework requirements, focused on reproductive and productive enterprises, field visits and interview with the laboratory executive director were carried out. Considering the pectens production activities, 24 socio-environmental indicators were developed and the impact indices were automatically calculated by the system’s spreadsheets. General performance index for the pectens reproduction activities indicated an important contribution of technological innovations for the sustainable production of the In vitro Fertilization Laboratory. The employed method was considered as appropriate for evaluations of sustainability at this agribusiness activity, dealing with indicators as tools in order to identify possible risks for negative impacts. Those indicators include aspects beyond those commonly presented by environmental impact assessments, and were capable to provide adequate management and sustainable development for the studied Organization.

Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research and Animal Science , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-95962002000200007
Abstract: serial clinical, colpo-cytological and endocrinological examinations of two five-year-old females of the crab-eating dog (cerdocyon thous), from the riozoo foundation in the state of rio de janeiro - brazil, were carried out over a 10-month period. clinically healthy animals were kept in sand substratum enclosures, located 500m apart from each other. they were each housed with two males. the colpo-cytological technique employed for cerdocyon thous used methods similar to those developed for domestic bitches. unlike domestic dogs, blood cells were absent in all phases of the estrus cycle, including the pro-estrus phase. differentiation of each type of vaginal cells during the estrus cycle phases in this species follows the same patterns shown by domestic bitches. the estradiol and progesterone levels were similar to those occurring in domestic bitches. the progesterone levels reach their maximum (46 ng/ml) around the 10th day of pregnancy. the estradiol analysis demonstrated that, although levels of this hormone could be high at various times throughout the year, mating actually occurs in late winter and in spring. it was impossible to evaluate whether males and females kept in close proximity throughout the entire year would stimulate the production of estradiol, resulting in what would be considered a captivity artifice.

Acta Scientiarum : Animal Sciences , 2009,
There is currently great interest in sugarcane utilization during dry weather periods due to its capacity of high carbohydrate production and because it can be stored naturally with little loss in nutritional value. Thus, an experiment was performed in the experimental Station of Barra do Cho a and in the Itapetinga of UESB campus, to identify the potential of different sugarcane varieties for animal feeding. Twenty-three sugarcane varieties were harvested 16months after planting, and evaluated using a completely randomized complete block design with two repetitions. Agronomic and bromatological characteristics were estimated. Diversity was verified among the varieties for the studied characteristics. The levels ofashes, ether extract and crude protein found were low, which evidenced the need for supplementation in sugarcane-based diets. The RB76-5418, CB47-355, CP-5122 and SP80-2015 sugarcane varieties presented potential for continuing animals studies due to the largerequilibrium between the agronomic and bromatological characteristics that can improve animal performance.

Abstract: aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic often used as monotherapy or as add-on therapy in patients with manic episodes, as well as for bipolar disorders. the antidepressive effect of the atypical antipsychotic medications raises the possibility that these drugs may increase the risk of mania in susceptible individuals. with the aim of providing further evidence on this subject, herein we reported three patients with bipolar disorder and mania induced by aripiprazole. patients had different final diagnosis as well as different comorbidities. their therapeutic regimen was different as well. onset of manias was temporarily associated with aripiprazole use and important improvement happened after the discontinuation of this drug. we suggest that aripiprazole, due to its antidepressant properties, is a risk factor for mania and hypomania. mood stabilizer is recommended in certain individuals using this drug, in order to prevent phase switch. we also suggest the antidepressant efficacy of aripiprazole.

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to carry out a topographical analysis of frontal lobe executive function components in post-stroke patients. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study. The assessment using the WCST (Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) included sixteen patients with a clinical diagnosis of CVA and frontal lobe impairment. Results from the two groups were compared (patients with right frontal lobe impairment and patients with left frontal lobe impairment). Statistical analysis was performed using the program “Statistical Package for Social Sciences” (SPSS) Version 20.0. For comparison between groups was used Mann-Whitney test and considered the alpha level of 0.05 on the statistically significant results. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups, thus showing that executive functions are symmetrically distributed across the frontal lobes. Conclusion: Executive functions are symmetrically organized across the two frontal lobes, since the comparison between the groups did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference for any of the variables of WSCT.
