Strategies in secondary biliary fibrosis  [PDF]

Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering (JBiSE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jbise.2013.68A2002
Abstract: The cellular and molecular mechanisms that mediate hepatic fibrosis have provided a framework of different therapeutic foci to prevent, delay or in such case revert fibrosis and cirrhosis. The fundamental event in development of hepatic fibrosis caused by secondary biliary cholestasis is based on activation of the hepatic stellar cells (HSC) which the primary function is forming fibrosis. The activated HSC cells transform into myofibroblasts with capacity to produce alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). As a result, the HSC activates proliferation of the cholangiocytes and epithelial cells whose functions represent important anti-fibrotic objectives. Some strategies are described as targeting against molecule involved in fibrosis production; and some medications with anti-fibrotic functions that are actually available in the medical arsenal have been tested in experimental animal models and in few clinical studies, and their components act in relation to the fibrotic cascade. In the end, the treatment strategies for hepatic fibrosis can vary on an individual basis depending on the etiology, the risk of fibrosis progression and the predominant pathogenic medium, which indicates that a multi-factorial approach could be necessary. Orthotopic liver transplant continues being the last final alternative for hepatic insufficiency from any cause; however, in no way does it supersede healthy natural liver in survival and adequate function. The investigative arsenal continues to develop rapidly, giving rise to other possible objectives in pre-clinical studies of conceptual trials, such as the utilization of molecular, cellular, drugs therapy and Chinese herbs. Despite being aforementioned, there are no existing ideal alternatives that completely reverse fibrosis in humans. Future usefulness of the majority of management alternatives seems probable and could be feasible.
A Process of Creating Learning Objects from a Congress Platform

Telfor Journal , 2010,
Abstract: This paper presents the work carried out on recovering, manipulating, unificating, labeling and processing of documents developed within the congresses of TAEE (Technologies Applied to the Teaching of Electronics). The process developed consists of the creation of digital objects and documents arising from the extraction of metadata which define each digital object as a learning object. With the joint between a learning object and its metadata some information extrapolation is possible in multiple environments. Thus, these units of information permit the implementation of web environments, the study and analysis of their contents and the creation of file structures for their incorporation in repositories in a massive way.

On the Shape of Curves that are Rational in Polar Coordinates
J. G. Alcázar,G. M. Díaz-Toca
Computer Science , 2012, DOI: 10.1016/j.cagd.2012.09.001
Abstract: In this paper we provide a computational approach to the shape of curves which are rational in polar coordinates, i.e. which are defined by means of a parametrization (r(t),\theta(t)) where both r(t),\theta(t) are rational functions. Our study includes theoretical aspects on the shape of these curves, and algorithmic results which eventually lead to an algorithm for plotting the "interesting parts" of the curve, i.e. the parts showing the main geometrical features of it. On the theoretical side, we prove that these curves, with the exceptions of lines and circles, cannot be algebraic (in cartesian coordinates), we characterize the existence of infinitely many self-intersections, and we connect this with certain phenomena which are not possible in the algebraic world, namely the existence of limit circles, limit points, or spiral branches. On the practical side, we provide an algorithm which has been implemented in the computer algebra system Maple to visualize this kind of curves. Our implementation makes use (and improves some aspects of) the command polarplot currently available in Maple for plotting curves in polar form.

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2015.615251
Abstract: During a molecular characterization of the genus Dictyota J. V. Lamouroux (Phaeophyceae, Dictyotales) along the Mexican coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean, using psbA and cox1 genes, it was found that two particular collections did not match with the sequences published for a total of 39 species of Dictyota. For each gene, both collections diverged in high-uncorrected “p” distance values with respect to other related species. This high genetic divergence was corroborated by morphological analysis. Hence, we proposed Dictyota mayae J. Lozano-Orozco & Sentíes and Dictyota pedrochei J. Lozano-Orozco & Sentíes as new species.

Molecules , 2006, DOI: 10.3390/11040212
Abstract: 2,6-Dichloro-9-thiabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane, easily available by an improved condensation of sulfur dichloride, sulfuryl chloride, and 1,5-cyclooctadiene, is a well- behaved scaffold for the nucleophilic substitution of azides and cyanides via neighboring- group participation by the sulfur atom. The products are isolated in high yields with purity >95% by simple extraction and washing protocols.

A 33 year-old female with an asymptomatic pigmented mass in the iridocorneal angle of her right eye, arising from the ciliary body is presented. Ciliary body melanocytoma was suspected and conservative management recommended. After 36 months of follow-up the patient developed pain, inflammatory reaction and uncontrollable ocular hypertension, which was diagnosed as melanocytomalytic glaucoma. Tumor was removed by external iridecyclectomy and the histopathologic findings revealed necrotic melanocytoma. Discussion: Ciliary body melanocytoma is a rare benign pigmented tumor that may present extension to the anterior chamber. Differential diagnosis mainly includes ciliary body melanoma, which carries a different prognosis and treatment.

Abstract: In allergies, an unbalanced immune response towards a T helper (Th) 2 profile with high levels of Immunoglobulin (Ig) E is produced. We have demonstrated that the pre-administration of Enterococcus faecalis CECT7121 prevents the development of allergy in ovalbumin-immunized mice. In this work, we evaluated whether this bacterium can also revert an established allergic status. Mice were immunized with ovalbumin (OVA) and after that, were inoculated with an E. faecalis CECT7121 suspension. In immunized animals, serum specific immune response, proliferative activity of memory splenocytes, and levels of Th2 cytokines were assessed. The in vivo active cutaneous anaphylaxis test was also performed. The treatment with E. faecalis CECT7121 only increased anti-OVA IgG2a levels. No differences were observed in other specific immunological parameters. Probiotic-treatment did not prove to have any desensitizing effect on mice. These results, together with those recently published, can be concluded that this bacterium would not be appropriate for the treatment of allergic symptoms.
