Nucleolar organizer regions and a new chromosome number for Rhea americana (Aves: Rheiformes)
Gunski, Ricardo José;Giannoni, Miriam Luz;
Genetics and Molecular Biology , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47571998000200006
Abstract: sequential banding analysis (giemsa-c-banding-ag nor) of chromosomes of the common rhea (rhea americana) was performed. metaphases were obtained by peripheral blood lymphocyte culture and monolayer embryo cell culture. the diploid chromosome number was 80, different from the 2n = 82 in previous reports. macrochromosome pairs 1, 2 and 5 were submetacentric and pair 3, subacrocentric. the 4th pair was acrocentric and all of the microchromosomes appeared to be acrocentric, with the exception of a clearly metacentric pair which was fully heterochromatic. the z was slightly larger than the w, both being acrocentric and c-band negative. nucleolar organizer regions were observed in the secondary constriction of a microchromosome pair. correct identification of the nor-bearing pair was possible only by sequential analyses, giemsa staining followed by the ag-nor technique.
Política fiscal y control del tabaco: una oportunidad única para beneficiar a la salud pública y al erario
Armendares,Pedro Enrique; Reynales Shigematsu,Luz Miriam;
Salud Pública de México , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-36342006000700020
Abstract: various studies and analyses show that an increase in tobacco prices through taxation is one of the most efficient tools in the application of integral policies in the fight against tobacco. increases in taxes contribute to cessation, to reductions in consumption and in the number of deaths among addicts and to decrease the number of people who start to smoke. however, many governments hesitate to apply high taxes to tobacco for fear of possible negative economic results including loss of jobs and a decrease in fiscal revenue as a consequence of smuggling. both literature and empirical experience indicate that these negative consequences do not occur or have been overestimated, often due to arguments promoted by the tobacco industry itself. increases in tobacco taxes result in greater fiscal income, even in the presence of smuggling, which can be confronted without eroding tobacco control policies. numerous countries, including mexico, still have a wide margin for increasing tobacco taxes, and thereby to take advantage of an exceptional opportunity that benefits both the population's health and the public treasury. to do so, governments must stand up to the powerful tobacco industry, which is aware of the efficiency of taxes to combat tobacco use and therefore resorts to intense ad campaigns, political lobbying and negotiation of voluntary agreements for "self-regulation" in order to avoid stricter legislative or fiscal measures.

Bettancourt, Lorena;Mu?oz, Luz Angelica;Merighi, Miriam Aparecida Barbosa;Santos, Marcia Fernandes dos;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692011000500018
Abstract: during theoretical and practical activities in clinical training areas, nursing teachers provide the bases needed for the development of future professionals. the goal is to understand the experience of nursing teachers with nursing students in clinical training areas. therefore, a phenomenological qualitative method was chosen, and martin heidegger's philosophical framework was used to support data analysis. five faculty from a chilean university participated in the study. the analysis permitted discovering the following themes: being a faculty at the hospital, contact with nurse practitioners and being a faculty in care teaching. the study demonstrated that teaching/care integration is a constructive element that facilitates the teaching and learning process, aiming to prepare nursing professionals who incorporate the bases of authentic care into their activities.
Cytotaxonomy of Simulium cauchense Floch & Abonnenc and Simulium quadrifidum Lutz (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Brazilian Amazonia
Alvan-Aguilar, Miriam Adriana;Hamada, Neusa;Adler, Peter H;Luz, Sérgio Luiz Bessa;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762005000300006
Abstract: simulium cauchense floch & abonnenc and simulium quadrifidum lutz are widely distributed in the amazon region and are morphologically similar at the larval and pupal stages. chromosomally, these species are readily distinguished by the position of the nucleolar organizer, which is in the short arm of chromosome i in s. cauchense and in the long arm of chromosomes iii in s. quadrifidum. they also differ by three fixed inversions. sex chromosomes are undifferentiated in both species. chromosomal resolution of the two species allowed us to evaluate four structural features previously used as diagnostic aids at the larval stage. characters that distinguish larvae of the two species are the number of branches and branching patterns of the dorsal abdominal setae and the dark band on each primary fan. branching patterns of the gill histoblasts were often diagnostic, with s. quadrifidum exhibiting more proximal branching and s. cauchense more distal branching. sites where both species occurred sometimes had larvae with one petiole branching proximally and the other distally; in these cases examination of the chromosomes permitted assignment of the specimen to species. pigmentation patterns of larvae, on the other hand, are highly variable. color typically is sex linked in both species.
La experiencia de las enfermeras clínicas con estudiantes de enfermería: un análisis fenomenológico
Santos, Marcia Fernandes dos;Merighi, Miriam Aparecida Barbosa;Mu?oz, Luz Angélica;
Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0080-62342009000300005
Abstract: this study aimed at understanding the reality of being a clinical nurse who works with nursing students while they develop their care experience in the clinical practice. the research was carried out by means of a phenomenological approach. nine clinical nurses were interviewed and based on their discourses four categories of concretely experienced events were identified and interpreted according to martin heidegger's philosophical reference. among the categories emerging from those discourses, this article highlights the following: being a nurse with students in their educational process, and the possibility of being with private and public university students. these aspects are presented here in order to encourage reflections on the important participation of clinical nurses in the education of future nursing professionals.

Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2010,

The daily practice of nurses working in haemodialysis involves risks such as accidental injections, with the consequent risk of contact with biological agents. Accordingly, the highest possible number of tools with safety devices should be used. Our aim was to evaluate the possible differences between needles fitted with safety devices and needles which did not have such devices in the puncture of arteriovenous fistulas. We carried out an experimental prospective study with 42 patients who had antologous fistulas. A register was created of data relating to the "patient", the "professional" and the "material" in order to evaluate differences between the two different types of needle. A total of 35 patients were analysed over 455 sessions. There were no significant differences in the use or not of the safety device with regard to the pain caused, blood flow, venous pressure or bleeding on puncture. Of 910 injections with safety needles, the device jammed on 24 occasions.
