Experimental Works on Short Range Communication Systems Using Photovoltaic Based Receiver

Abstract: A lot of research has focussed on LED lights to move technology forward in the visible light communication field. Due to their properties which include high efficiency, high luminance, reliability, long life time, low energy consumption and cost savings, white light LEDs are expected to be the next generation of lamp and communication systems. White light LEDs have dual functions; they illuminate rooms and have applications in optical wireless communication systems. In this study, the fundamental experiment was carried out to study the ability of white LEDs to be used as the transmitter with a photocell as the receiver. The LED worked as the transmitter and transmitted the modulated audio signal via open space to the receiver. The photocell worked as the transducer and once it was connected to the amplified speaker, the original audio signal could be heard. The results from these experiments showed that high frequency could enhance the ability of white LEDs to be used for data transmission with the ability to hear the output audio signal up to 50 cm from the transmitter to the receiver.
The Eye Diagram Analysis of Restoration Scheme in FTTH-PON

Abstract: In this study, a technique for automatic restoration scheme for the ease of customers in a passive optical network is proposed. Protection switching against the failure in fiber line is carried out using our restoration scheme. The smart and intelligent system of FTTH is expected to be a key element which provides centralized monitoring, survivability and instantly maintenance of FTTH customer access network. In this study, we implement a cost effective restoration scheme for a novel tree-based for Intermediate Split Structure (ISS) in the drop region section. The protection mechanism for tree based optical switch will have capability to divert the signal onto protection line according to the types of failure condition and location of failures in access network by means of Zig Zag mechanism. This will ensure the data flow continuously due to breakdown occur in the network and instantly repair operation. We employ the dedicated and shared protection in our design. Four faulty conditions are considered in this article and OptiSystem, Inc. software is used to prove the solution feasibility. This study focused on the eye diagram parameter analysis in the FTTH-PON network during the working and failure condition. Four parameters will be concentrated which are BER, eye opening, maximum Q factor and jitter. In the case of failure condition, four restoration schemes are activated to ensure the signal flow continuously without perturbation.
The Use of Massive Endoprostheses for the Treatment of Bone Metastases

Abstract: Purpose. We report a series of 58 patients with metastatic bone disease treated with resection and endoprosthetic reconstruction over a five-year period at our institution. Introduction. The recent advances in adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy in cancer treatment have resulted in improved prognosis of patients with bone metastases. Most patients who have either an actual or impending pathological fracture should have operative stabilisation or reconstruction. Endoprosthetic reconstructions are indicated in patients with extensive bone loss, failed conventional reconstructions, and selected isolated metastases. Methods and Results. We identified all patients who were diagnosed with metastatic disease to bone between 1999 and 2003. One hundred and seventy-one patients were diagnosed with bone metastases. Metastatic breast and renal cancer accounted for 84 lesions (49%). Fifty-eight patients with isolated bone metastasis to the appendicular skeleton had an endoprosthetic reconstruction. There were 28 males and 30 females. Twelve patients had an endoprosthesis in the upper extremity and 46 patients had an endoprosthesis in the lower extremity. The mean age at presentation was 62 years (24 to 88). At the time of writing, 19 patients are still alive, 34 patients have died, and 5 have been lost to follow up. Patients were followed up and evaluated using the musculoskeletal society tumour score (MSTS) and the Toronto extremity salvage score (TESS). The mean MSTS was 73% (57% to 90%) and TESS was 71% (46% to 95%). Mean follow-up was 48.2 months (range 27 to 82 months) and patients died of disease at a mean of 22 months (2 to 51 months) from surgery. Complications included 5 superficial wound infections, 1 aseptic loosening, 4 dislocations, 1 subluxation, and 1 case, where the tibial component of a prosthesis rotated requiring open repositioning. Conclusions. We conclude that endoprosthetic replacement for the treatment of isolated bone metastases is a reliable method of limb reconstruction in selected cases. It is associated with low complication and failure rates in our series, and achieves the aims of restoring function, allowing early weight bearing and alleviating pain.
Modelling of the Usefulness of Carbon Nanotubes as Antiviral Compounds for Treating Alzheimer Disease  [PDF]

Abstract: The new generations of nano-devices successfully apply with great promise as drug carriers in the treatment of different diseases. The proposed model aims to determine the pharmacological targets and evaluate the bio-safety of usefulness of carbon nanotube conjugated with two different antiviral compounds, Acetylcholine and Ravastigmine, for treating Alzheimer disease. We also obtain the medicinal model mathematically to evaluate the interaction energy arising from encapsulation of each antiviral compound inside the single-walled carbon nanotube. Acetylcholine is modelled as two-connected spheres, while Ravastigmine has two possible structures which are an ellipsoid and cylinder, all interacting with the interior wall of single-walled carbon nanotubes with variant radii rc . Our calculations show that the single-walled carbon nanotube of radius rc greater than 3.391 Å that will accept both drugs which are quite closer to the recent findings.

Abstract: Energy efficiency generates substantial financial savings while at the same time improving environmental, business, home, and transport benefit. The efficiency of energy use will lead to a reduction in national energy consumption, as well as by improving energy efficiency the cost of using energy can be kept low and not blown out of proportion. The concept of energy efficiency will be in the interest of both customers and manufacturers because of its financial advantages. Energy-efficiency standards and labels can be the most effective long-term energy-efficiency policy any government can implement. Improving energy efficiency of power supply is one of the most cost-effective and feasible option to meet the energy efficiency practices.
Some Morphological Structural Studies of Cucurbitaceous Tendrils under Arid Conditions

Abstract: This study was carried out at Khulis, Khulis Governorate, Makkah region, on the first of April during the growing season of 2007, to study the morphology and anatomy of tendrils in different eight of cucurbit genera. The results showed a great variation among the most tested cucurbit genera concerning the twisting, branching, number of tendrils per node and presence of tendril trunk. Also, shape of transverse sections were ovate, sinuate-rhombic, sinuate-emarginate oblong, emarginate-ovate, spherical, notched-ovate and reniform. Furthermore, presence of collenchymatous, sclerenchymatous tissues, number of vascular bundles in Transverse Section (TV) and arrangement of vascular bundles varied according to the studied species. It could be conclude from this research that there are a numerous of qualitative traits of tendrils which plays an important role in identification of cucrbitaceous plants for examples; the twisting, branching, transverse section shape, collenchymatous tissue, scleranchymatous tissue, tylosis and arrangement of vascular bundles.
Fasting ramadan in kidney transplant patients is safe

Abstract: Muslims with renal transplant often ask their doctors whether fasting Ramadan is safe. Scanty studies have addressed this question. This prospective study was undertaken to identify any clinical or biological changes with Muslim fasting. 22 kidney transplant patients with stable kidney functions, who were transplanted for more than one year, and voluntarily chose to fast during Ramadan in 1425 H (October-November 2004), were studied. Total of 22 subjects (10 men and 12 women) with a mean age of 47 ± 11.6 years were studied. Full clinical and biological assessment was done before during and after the month of Ramadan fasting. Medications were taken in two divided doses at sunset (time of breaking the fast) and pre dawn (before the fast). None of the patients experienced any undue fatigue, or symptoms. Body weight, blood pressure, kidney function tests, blood sugar, lipid profile, and cyclosporine levels remained stable. In conclusion it is safe for renal transplant recipients of more than one year and having stable graft function to fast during the month of Ramadan; however caution is advised for moderate to severe impaired renal function.

Abstract: The sagittae mass asymmetry was studied in the teleost Lutjanus bengalensis and it is calcula-ted as the difference between the mass of the right and left paired otoliths divided by average otolith mass. As in the case of other symmetrical fish species, the result of the present study showed that the absolute value of sagittae mass asymmetry (X) in L. bengalensis does not de-pend on fish length and otolith growth rate. On the other hand, the absolute value of otolith mass asymmetry is increased with the fish length. The value of sagittae mass asymmetry falls between -0.2 and +0.2.
A REVIEW ON PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT IN MALAYSIA

Abstract: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was introduced to measure the benefit or cost from physical development to the public and community. In Malaysia, EIA was initiated in 1988 as a mandatory legislative requirement to protect and enhance the quality of the environment through licensing, setting of standards, coordination of research and dissemination of information to the public. Public involvement in assessment period is vital, and this conceptual paper identifies that there are three levels of participation in EIA. However, public participation in EIA in Malaysia, in general, is only instrumental due to weaknesses in regulation, lack of awareness and expertise among the public. This further raises the question of effective EIA implementation when public representation is characterized by pseudo participation and select involvement rather than broad participation of all community members, which is an important prerequisite for effective public participation.

Abstract: Zn substituted Cu-Zn ferrites with a composition Cu1-xZnxFe2O4 have been synthesized by standard double sintering ceramic method and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The single-phase cubic spinel structure of all the samples has been confirmed from X-ray diffraction analyses. The lattice constant is found to increase linearly with the manganese content obeying Vegard’s law. This increase in lattice parameter is explained in terms of the sizes of component ions. It is well known that density plays a key role in controlling the properties of polycrystalline ferrites. The X-ray and bulk densities of the Cu-Zn ferrite is significantly decreased whereas porosity increased with increasing Zn concentration, thereby giving an impression that zinc might be helping in the densification of the materials. SEM micrographs exhibit a decrease in grain size with increasing Zn content. The real part of initial permeability, μ′ increase with increasing Zn contents upto x = 0.5 after that it decreases with higher Zn content.
