Slow Plasma Dynamo Driven by Electric Current Helicity in Non-Compact Riemann Surfaces of Negative Curvature  [PDF]
Luiz Carlos Garcia de Andrade
Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2010.15046
Abstract: Boozer addressed the role of magnetic helicity in dynamos [1]. He pointed out that the magnetic helicity conservation implies that the dynamo action is more easily attainable if the electric potential varies over the surface of the dynamo. This provided motivated us to investigate dynamos in Riemannian curved surfaces [2]. Thiffeault and Boozer [3] discussed the onset of dissipation in kinematic dynamos. In this paper, when curvature is constant and negative, a simple laminar dynamo solution is obtained on the flow topology of a Poincare disk, whose Gauss curvature is K = –1. By considering a laminar plasma dynamo [4] the electric current helicity λ ≈ 2.34 m–1 for a Reynolds magnetic number of Rm ≈ 210 and a growth rate of magnetic field |γ| ≈ 0.022 are obtained. Negative constant curvature non-compact H2 manifold, has also been used in onecomponent electron 2D plasma by Fantoni and Tellez [5]. Chicone et al. (CMP (1997)) showed fast dynamos can be supported in compact H2. PACS: 47.65.Md.
Lift Truck Load Stress in Concrete Floors  [PDF]
Vinicius Fernando Arcaro, Luiz Carlos de Almeida
Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2017.72015
Abstract: This text presents an analytical expression to calculate the maximum tension, at the bottom side of a concrete slab on ground, due to lift truck wheel loads. The result of the analytical expression is in close agreement with the result of a design chart by the Portland Cement Association and with the result of a finite element analysis. The analytical expression is able to show the relationships among the design variables and it can be used for the thickness design of concrete floors for factories and warehouses. The expression applies only to unreinforced concrete slabs on ground.
Practical Aspects of the Design and Construction of a Small Cable Roof Structure  [PDF]
Vinicius Fernando Arcaro, Luiz Carlos de Almeida
Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2017.73031
Abstract: Cable roof structures?have?only become widespread in large span structures in the latter part of the twentieth century. However,?they?still represent a relatively new form of roof construction, especially as in the present case of a small span innovative structural solution. The contribution of this text to the structural engineering community lies in the increased interest in building simple cable roof structures. Since its completion in September 1996, this small cable roof structure has been recognized as an interesting architectural and structural example. The text describes aspects of the design and construction of a small cable roof that was designed as a roof for an open-air theater stage for the city of Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Sao Paulo, Brazil. A cable network, in the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid surface, is anchored in a reinforced concrete edge ring. The projection of the ring’s axis onto the ground plane is an ellipse. Workers with specialized training were employed in the various stages of the construction, which was completed in September 1996.
Friction Material Temperature Distribution and Thermal and Mechanical Contact Stress Analysis  [PDF]
Carlos Abilio Passos Travaglia, Luiz Carlos Rolim Lopes
Engineering (ENG) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2014.613092
Abstract: In brake systems, where the components are exposed to mechanical and thermal loads, the numerical analysis is very helpful. The main function of the brake system is to control or reduce vehicle’s speed by transformation of kinetic and potential energy in thermal energy. Using finite element method and Abaqus application, the present work proposed a model to study the impact of these loads on the performance of a pneumatic S cam drum brake’s friction material. The model included the effects of the rivet process; brake torque and warming in one of the 17 t bus front brake lining. Areas where the stresses vary with considerable amplitudes during temperature increase and brake application were identified. Also, it was possible to compare results of the numerical model to vehicle’s experimental measurements and understand its proximity to real braking events. By the application of the methodology and using the numerical model, proposed in this work, it will be possible to contribute considerably for a more accurate design of the friction material, besides undertake a better selection of the sub-compounds which it is made of.
Apontamentos teórico-conceituais sobre processos avaliativos considerando as múltiplas dimens?es da gest?o do cuidado em saúde
Cecilio, Luiz Carlos Oliveira;
Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832011000200021
Abstract: this paper presents a discussion on health evaluation that considers the multiple dimensions of healthcare management (individual, family, professional, organizational, systemic, and societal) through a gradation of tools and objectives related to the evaluative processes, which, by taking the societal and systemic dimensions as a starting point, with their demand for "harder" and well-shaped indices, are carried out towards healthcare processes that present more micropolitical aspects. therefore, it proposes a mobile equation that translates the "outer" relation (administrators, researchers, managers) and the "inner" relation (teams acting as healthcare providers) so that the micropolitical level is envisaged in all its wealth and specificity. an evaluative logic that not only stands for the mere decoding and operationalization of the "hard" indices as defined by the administrators (from "outside"), but is produced within itself ("inside" the health care).
Os reformadores empresariais da educa??o: da desmoraliza??o do magistério à destrui??o do sistema público de educa??o
Freitas, Luiz Carlos de;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302012000200004
Abstract: this study aims to gather empirical evidence usually skimmed by corporate reformers of education in brazil and present some of the characteristics that mark the proposal of "new reformers". the categories that define this central educational policy involve a combination of accountability, meritocracy and privatization. this study presents the american production because it is privileged in this country; these ideas were more widely tested with results that characterize them as a true lost decade for american education. in brazil, these ideas are growing particularly at the state and municipal education. it is intended to warn of the risks of these policies as evidenced in research and educational practice.
Qualidade negociada: avalia??o e contra-regula??o na escola pública
Freitas, Luiz Carlos de;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302005000300010
Abstract: negotiated quality is proposed as a counter-regulation alternative favoring complex change processes at school. this concept sees quality as produced through an institutional assessment process, collectively built, whose reference is the political-pedagogical project of school. the text substantiates the unsuitability of strategies that "spread" changes from a center, without any reference to the actual problems of school. it analyzes the concept of public services so as to understand its peculiar characteristics. since civil servants have job security and work within specific relationships to power, money and time, it attempts to show that, as was the case with the neoliberal public policies (psdb-pfl), the participative public policies (pt and allies) will also be faced with problems if they do not acknowledge such specificities and implement negotiated assessment processes that create agreed commitments and stimulate new organization forms in the internal relationships of schools.
Elimina??o adiada: o ocaso das classes populares no interior da escola e a oculta??o da (má) qualidade do ensino
Freitas, Luiz Carlos de;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302007000300016
Abstract: this study criticizes the ways mec-inep is implementing assessment policies based on "responsabilization". it also proposes an alternative form to deal with the problem based on "negotiated quality" in a bilateral involvement of the state and school. it suggests initial elements for a state policy in the field of assessment and sees the process of the institutional assessment of school as the link between the external assessment of system and school and its professionals. it alerts to the fact that unilateral responsabilization policies will lead to configure schools for the poor and schools for the rich. it also highlights the risk that the external assessment systems centralized at government level conceal, with such statistical indicators as the ideb, the difficulties faced by the popular classes to learn within school, and legitimate strategies that only lead to deferring their exclusion - despite a discourse of transparency and responsibility.
