Anthropogenic Disturbances and the Natural Vegetation Regeneration: A Case Study of a Forest Fragment Located in a Cuesta Relief Area, State of S?o Paulo, Brazil  [PDF]
Luiz Alberto Blanco Jorge, Vanessa Rodrigues Pereira
Open Journal of Forestry (OJF) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojf.2015.56055
Abstract: The present study has been conducted in one of the five natural vegetation fragments at the Experimental Farm Edgardia, in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. In the past the forest fragment suffered disturbances due to the selective exploitation of tree species and the use of part of the surface as pasture. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the structure and the dynamics of natural vegetation. Three phytosociological surveys (2006, 2010 and 2014) were carried out in a sampled area of one hectare. The most abundant species were mapped in 2014, in a sampling unit with two hectares. Individuals of 37 families and 110 species have been recorded. The oscillation of the basal area observed through the forest inventories was due to the instability caused by disturbances. Only two out of the seven most abundant species mapped showed exponential diameter distribution. The unimodal distributions shown by the other five species have suggested that the vegetation has been occupying the most open spaces through regeneration in cycles. There was direct association between the spatial distribution and the dispersion syndrome for five out of the seven most abundant species. Three species have zoochoric dispersion, showing that wild animals populations have accomplished their function in the dispersion of seeds/fruit. The spatial distributions of four out of the seven most abundant species have provided evidence of how the regeneration of natural vegetation is being processed in this area.
Salários e risco de acidentes de trabalho: evidências de diferenciais compensatórios para a indústria manufatureira
Esteves, Luiz Alberto;
Economia Aplicada , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-80502008000200005
Abstract: the aim of this paper is to provide empirical evidences of compensating wage differentials for brazilian manufacturing firms. this theory states that higher injury risk industries would pay higher wages in order to attract workers - it implies a tradeoff between wages and job amenities. the empirical evidences of this paper are similar to stylized facts of the literature: omitted variables bias provides underestimated values for the injury risks coefficient, but after controlling the unobserved heterogeneity of workers the coefficient becomes positive and significant.
Quando o privado tem interesse público: a funda??o e a trajetória institucional da Faculdade Livre de Direito de Porto Alegre (1900-1937)
Grijó, Luiz Alberto;
História (S?o Paulo) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-90742009000200011
Abstract: the present article approaches the institutional trajectory of the faculdade de direito de porto alegre (porto alegre law school), since its foundation in 1900 up to 1937. first are analyzed its directors, then the relationships between the school and federal laws and, finally, its patrimonial evolution. unlike some works sustain, it can be affirmed that without the support of public administrations, especially by financial and patrimonial resources, it would have been impossible the creation and the maintenance of the institution. the existence of the school, initially a private one, therefore, was always attached to the support of political leaderships from the hegemonic political faction in the brazilian's state of rio grande do sul.
Uma nota sobre intensidade de supervis?o nas indústrias brasileiras
Esteves, Luiz Alberto;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402006000300002
Abstract: the main goal of this paper is to test the shirking version of the efficiency wage model for the brazilian industries' case. this model states that there exists a negative relationship between wages and intensity of supervision, or a tradeoff between internal and external supervision. different from other empirical papers developed for the brazilian case, this paper uses the span of control (supervision/ staff ratio) - rather than size of firms - as proxy variable for intensity of supervision. the efficiency wage hypothesis is empirically supported by this work.
As políticas neoliberais e a crise na América do Sul
Bandeira, Luiz Alberto Moniz;
Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-73292002000200007
Abstract: the present article analyses the social, economic and political effects of the neo-liberal politics implementation in some south american countries (argentina, brazil, uruguay, paraguay, chile, bolivia, ecuador, venezuela and colombia). the execution of the washington consensus' program by democratically elected governments in the 1990's is pointed as aggravating the internal and external crisis that was initiated in the 1960's and 1970's, and deepened in the 1980's.
O Bar?o de Rothschild e a quest?o do Acre
Bandeira, Luiz Alberto Moniz;
Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-73292000000200007
Abstract: the author reconstructs the history of the brazilian state of acre, emphasizing foreign interests which were underneath the quarrel between brazil and bolivia. tension increased in the region because, on the one hand, bolivia rented the land to the bolivian syndicate, an anglo-american company, and on the other hand, the brazilian foreign affairs minister, rio branco, decided to claim sovereignty over the territory. the ambivalent rothschild comes up in this setting, defending a peaceful solution through the arbitration of great britain.
Soil erosion fragility assessment using an impact model and geographic information system
Jorge, Luiz Alberto Blanco;
Scientia Agricola , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-90162009000500011
Abstract: a study was taken in a 1566 ha watershed situated in the capivara river basin, municipality of botucatu, s?o paulo state, brazil. this environment is fragile and can be subjected to different forms of negative impacts, among them soil erosion by water. the main objective of the research was to develop a methodology for the assessment of soil erosion fragility at the various different watershed positions, using the geographic information system ilwis version 3.3 for windows. an impact model was created to generate the soil's erosion fragility plan, based on four indicators of fragility to water erosion: land use and cover, slope, percentage of soil fine sand and accumulated water flow. thematic plans were generated in a geographic information system (gis) environment. first, all the variables, except land use and cover, were described by continuous numerical plans in a raster structure.the land use and cover plan was also represented by numerical values associated with the weights attributed to each class, starting from a pairwise comparison matrix and using the analytical hierarchy process. a final field check was done to record evidence of erosive processes in the areas indicated as presenting the highest levels of fragility, i.e., sites with steep slopes, high percentage of soil fine sand, tendency to accumulate surface water flow, and sites of pastureland. the methodology used in the environmental problems diagnosis of the study area can be employed at places with similar relief, soil and climatic conditions.
Vitoriano dos Anjos Figueiroa, o Altar-mor da Sé de Campinas e a tradi??o retabilística baiana
Freire, Luiz Alberto Ribeiro;
Varia Historia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-87752008000200007
Abstract: this paper talks about the life and work of an important carver, vitoriano dos anjos figueiroa, who worked in bahia (salvador and rec?ncavo) during the first half of the xix century, and migrated in the 1850s to the city of campinas, in s?o paulo, where he made a magnificent main altarpiece in the cathedral, a canopy with twelve columns of technical and aesthetic excellence. we start addressing the news and the artistic production of vitoriano dos anjos in bahia, presenting important revelations about documents and works that enrich the current knowledge. then, we follow the carver trajectory in campinas, comparing documental data with chronicles published in the journals of s?o paulo. we conclude analyzing the artist's achievements, from a formal and stylistic point of view, identifying the echoes of a relevant tradition in the production of altarpieces, developed in bahia during the eighteenth century.
Aumentando as chances de sucesso no desenvolvimento e implementa??o de sistemas de informa??es
Albertin, Alberto Luiz;
Revista de Administra??o de Empresas , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-75901996000300008
Abstract: the information system implementation is more than installing a developed system and training the user to use it. for the implementation success, we need, since its beginning until its implementation, to study the context and build a propitious environment in order to guarantee its development, implementation, acceptance and use. the variables approach combines the organizational context during the si development and implementation, the relationship among the process participants and the strategy in order to guarantee the project success.
