Introduction: spermicides are contraceptive methods aimed at either immobilizing or killing spermatozoa. Objective: evaluate the spermicidal and cytotoxic activity of extracts of Sapindus saponaria L. (jaboncillo) on human spermatozoa and the HeLa cell line, respectively. Methods: semen samples from healthy individuals were incubated with extracts of Sapindus saponaria L. and their fractions. Sperm motility and viability were measured before and after each treatment. Additionally, the cytotoxic effect of the extract on the HeLa cell line was assessed by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxy methoxy phenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium MTS assay. Results: maximum spermicidal effect was observed when semen samples were incubated with the polar fraction of Sapindus saponaria L. leaf extract after 5 minutes of treatment (p< 0.05). No cytotoxic effect on the HeLa cell line was found after 6 and 12 hours of treatment with the polar fraction of the leaf extract. Conclusion: the extract of Sapindus saponaria L. may be a new spermicidal option with fewer adverse effects.

Abstract: The aim of this manuscript was to show a review about historical data, uses, advantages and disadvantages of spermicidal products. Conducting a search in several biomedical databases and using some terms such as Contraception, Spermatozoa, Spermicides, Nonoxynol-9, Microbicide and Natural Products there was realized a literature review selecting different scientific articles, documents and guidelines that allowed the realization of this work. Contraception has been a worldwide interest subject since a long time ago, implicating aspects such as natality control and sexual transmitted infections. Eventually, due to the increased knowledge in contraception, some spermicidal products have been developed including the synthetic ones. However, different organizations have paid attention to the necessity for seeking new compounds with spermicidal and microbicidal activity, associated to minimal side effects; among these new molecules, the present article highlight those potential spermicides derived from natural products.

Facet block is a procedure used in patients with facet arthrosis in which several other medical techniques have failed. In our country, there is no evidence or studies regarding its efficacy, thus the interest in its demonstration. A retrospective observational cohort study was carried out on patients intervened between January 2005 and December 2009 at Clínica CES. Data was collected from the patient's clinical records by means of a survey designed for that purpose. Also, positive clinical outcomes were correlated to age, gender, occupation, evolution time, motor and sensitive symptoms as well as comorbidities. The sample included 232 patients between the ages of 21 and 92, with an average age of 56.9 (± 14.6) years, and a lumbar pain evolution time of 2 years in 40% of the individuals in the sample. The most commonly used imaging test before the procedure was magnetic resonance imaging in 42.2% of patients, computed tomography scan was used in 38.31% and X-rays in 7.46%. The procedure was effective in 78% of
