Abstract: Colloidal suspensions of semiconductor InP@ZnS nanoparticles were prepared using single-step procedure without precursor injection. Thermal properties of toluene containing InP@ZnS semiconductor with different sizes (3.1, 4.2, and 4.6 nm) were measured by mode mismatched dualbeam thermal lens technique. This was done in order to measure the effect of the presence of semiconductor nanoparticles and size on the nanofluids thermal diffusivity. The characteristic time constant of the transient thermal lens was estimated by fitting the experimental data to the theoretical expression for transient thermal lens. The thermal diffusivity of the nanofluids (toluene, containing InP@ZnS semiconductor nanoparticles) it seems to be strongly dependent on the presence of semiconductor nanoparticles and particles size. For the case of nanofluids consisting of InP@ZnS nanoparticles dispersed in toluene, it was observed a decrease in the thermal diffusivity. Such behavior differs from other nanofluids, in the sense that they had shown positive thermal diffusivity enhancement. The minimum diffusivity was achieved for the nanoparticles with lowest size. Plausible explanation for such nanofluids low thermal diffusivity with semiconductor nanoparticles is given. UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM and high-resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques were used to characterize the InP@ZnS nanoparticles.

Abstract: The primary hyperparathyroidism during pregnancy is an infrequent disorder but it is rarer in a twin gestation. Often it is not suspected because the symptomatology is overlapped with the normal course of pregnancy and it is usually discovered after a routine blood test. Ultrasound is the best option to identify the adenoma, while the gold-standard istechnetium-99 m sestamibi but is contraindicated in this situation. The treatment is controversial and depends of the time of the gestation: the medical therapy is accepted in the first and third trimester, and the surgery is reserved for the second trimester, where the side effects are low. We present a case of primary hyperparathyroidism in a twin pregnancy treated by a minimally invasive parathyroidectomy in the second trimester without consequences for both, mother and newborns.

Authors determined plasma amino accids levels in model of experimental epilepsy with lidocaine-induced "kindling". International Journal of Biomedical Science , 2009,
Abstract: Background: A method to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was developed and standardized. Methods: This method measure conjugated diene (CD) formation and electrophoretic mobility of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in agarose gels in the presence and absence of HDL. HDL was isolated from 1 mL of plasma within 24 hours and oxidation assays were performed within 6 hours. Oxidation was induced by adding CuSO4. The lag phase increase in CD kinetics and the inhibition of electrophoretic mobility were defined as the HDL antioxidant capacity. Results: The optimal conditions for the CD assay were 2.5 μM CuSO4, LDL at 0.1 g apoB/L, HDL at 0.1 g apoA-I/L, at 37oC and for 3h 50 min. Agarose electrophoresis at 100 V, at 4oC for 50 min was then performed immediately. CD formation variability was 21.1% for inter-assay CV and 12.7% for intra-assay CV. Electrophoretic mobility was 26.5% for inter-assay CV and 2.4% for intra-assay CV. Correlation analysis showed a significant association between the antioxidant capacity of HDL and its neutral/polar lipid ratio. Conclusions: The method herein described measures of the HDL antioxidant capacity in a reproducible and rapid manner that can be applied to a relatively high number of samples

Electronic Journal of Biotechnology , 2010,
Abstract: biocontrol of rhizoctonia solani in tomatoes cultivated under greenhouse and field conditions was analyzed using the trichoderma harzianum mutants th650-ng7, th11a80.1, th12a40.1, th12c40.1 and th12a10.1 and thf2-1, respectively. their innocuousness on tomato cultivars 92.95 and gondola (greenhouse assays), and on cultivar fortaleza (field assays) was established. alginate pellets (1.7 g pellets/l soil) containing c.a1 x 105 colony forming units (cfu)/g pellet were applied to a soil previously inoculated with r. solani at transplant (greenhouse) or to a naturally infected soil (field). controls considered parental wild strains, a chemical fungicide and no additions. th11a 80.1, th12a10.1 and th650-ng7 prevented the 100% mortality of tomato plants cv. 92.95 caused by r. solani, and the 40% mortality in tomato plants cv. gondola (greenhouse assays). mortality reduction was reflected in canker level lessening and in plant parameters increases (development, fresh and dry weights). a different degree of susceptibility of tomato plants was observed, being gondola cv. more resistant than 92.95 cv. to infection in a soil previously inoculated with r. solani. tomato plants of cv. fortaleza did not show mortality in naturally infected soils (field assays), where the mutant thf2-1 reduced significantly the canker level caused by r. solani.
