Luis Porras,Roberto Lecuona

World Journal of Engineering and Technology (WJET) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/wjet.2014.23B013
Abstract:

This work is a proposal to spread the knowledge of tsunamis in the schools of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Ignorance of basic information about tsunamis and the existing threat, could result in deaths in areas where tsunami occur. For this reason, we have implemented this project which is intended to inform the population of coastal schools of the natural threat and how to deal with it. It is expected to prepare the population to adequately face an emergency by tsunami and reduce its impact. The work will be done through information sessions, training workshops and the production of a video that will be used for a permanent training in schools. The selected schools are in the communities of Barra del Colorado, Barra the Tortuguero, Barra de Parismina, Puerto Limón, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo.

Rodríguez-Porras,Luis; Raventós-Vorst,Henriette;
Acta Médica Costarricense , 2009,
Abstract: genetic factors are involved in the etiology of most common diseases and traits present in populations. different methodological approaches can be utilized to determine genes involved according to their genetic features in diseases. in the majority of conditions that follow a simple mendelian pattern culprit genetic mutations have been identified. conversely complex traits that are most common in the population are also the most difficult to identify. finding these genes is crutial no just to clarify the pathophysiology of these common diseases but also to identify environmental factors involved and to improve their treatment, including in some specific cases gene therapy.

Abstract: in the aftermath of mexico?s ratification of the framework convention on tobacco control, from june 2004 through december 2006, tobacco regulation by mexico?s government came to be shaped by an agreement between the health authorities and the leading tobacco companies in mexico. this agreement set federal tobacco control regulation, subjecting it to the approval of tobacco companies themselves. in addition, it established a donation by tobacco companies to the health authorities to be directly determined by the volume of tobacco sales in the country. so as to contribute to the full understanding of this agreement, this article strives to clearly identify its implications from a strictly legal perspective. on one hand, this study identifies the irregularities of the agreement in light of the applicable law; on the other, it identifies those elements that actually do comply with applicable law. in consequence, the text is divided in four sections: i) the first section explains the terms of the agreement itself, ii) the second section identifies those aspects of the agreement which are contrary to law, iii) the third section identifies those aspects of the agreement which are in accordance with law, and finally iv) presents the conclusions that follow from the preceding analysis.

We present a modification of this optical test designed to serve as a quality assurance tool during the surface preparation of 316L stainless steel substrates to a mirror quality, when metallographic methods are employed. We used a digital camera to obtain the Hartmann’s patterns which were later analyzed by means of a computer program, developed in MATLab , which quantified the intensity and the homogeneity of the surface of each one of the substrates studied, by calculating the average and the average quadratic deviation of the intensity of the Hartmann’s patterns, respectively. The modification of this optical test was found to be useful for the determination of the preparation quality of metallic surfaces in both, a quantitative and a qualitative manner

Physics , 2010,
Abstract: We established a sample of millimeter-wave and gamma-ray bright active galactic nuclei matching the WMAP catalog with the EGRET catalog, highest energy photons and the Fermi bright source list. We have monitored over 80 of these objects in the near infrared, obtaining over 2000 JHKs data points directly comparable with Fermi data. We present examples of correlated near infrared and gamma-ray activity of known blazars and recently identified sources.
Zeno dynamics in wave-packet diffraction spreading
M. A. Porras,A. Luis,I. Gonzalo,A. S. Sanz
Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.84.052109
Abstract: We analyze a simple and feasible practical scheme displaying Zeno, anti-Zeno, and inverse-Zeno effects in the observation of wave-packet spreading caused by free evolution. The scheme is valid both in spatial diffraction of classical optical waves and in time diffraction of a quantum wave packet. In the optical realization, diffraction spreading is observed by placing slits between a light source and a light-power detector. We show that the occurrence of Zeno or anti-Zeno effects depends just on the frequency of observations between the source and detector. These effects are seen to be related to the diffraction mode theory in Fabry-Perot resonators.
