Inflationary Super-Hubble Waves and the Size of the Universe

Abstract: The effect of the scalar spectral index on inflationary super-Hubble waves is to amplify/damp large wavelengths according to whether the spectrum is red ($n_{s}<1$) or blue ($n_{s}>1$). As a consequence, the large-scale temperature correlation function will unavoidably change sign at some angle if our spectrum is red, while it will always be positive if it is blue. We show that this inflationary filtering property also affects our estimates of the size of the homogeneous patch of the universe through the Grishchuk-Zel'dovich effect. Using the recent quadrupole measurement of ESA's Planck mission, we find that the homogeneous patch of universe is at least 87 times bigger than our visible universe if we accept Planck's best fit value $n_{s}=0.9624$. An independent estimation of the size of the universe could be used to independently constrain $n_{s}$, thus narrowing the space of inflationary models.

Displacement of the non-reduction disk with limitation of opening (DDwLO) can be treatment of the non-surgical form. However, it required scientific and clinic knowledge of diagnostic area of the disorders temporomandibulares. This study was performed with the patient CN, 18 years, white, female, who went to the orofacial pain ambulatory with complaints of extreme pain on the right temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and limitation of maximum opening of 29 mm with shift to right, which she has been suffering for at least three years. After a criterion anamnese the diagnosis hypothesis found was a displacement of the non-reduction disk with limitation of opening. The treatment was based on infiltration in the right TMJ with anesthesic followed by mandibular manipulation. After the therapeutic conduct the patient presented clinical signals of normality with absence of trismus and mandibular movement without shift to right. The patient was followed up during five years not presenting return of the pathology.

An Integer Programming Formulation Applied to Optimum Allocation in Multivariate Stratified Sampling

Abstract: The problem of optimal allocation of samples in surveys using a stratified sampling plan was first discussed by Neyman in 1934. Since then, many researchers have studied the problem of the sample allocation in multivariate surveys and several methods have been proposed. Basically, these methods are divided into two class: The first involves forming a weighted average of the stratum variances and finding the optimal allocation for the average variance. The second class is associated with methods that require that an acceptable coefficient of variation for each of the variables on which the allocation is to be done. Particularly, this paper proposes a new optimization approach to the second problem. This approach is based on an integer programming formulation. Several experiments showed that the proposed approach is efficient way to solve this problem, considering a comparison of this approach with the other approach from the literature.

Abstract: Among the diseases that affect the corn crop and can reduce the yield, there is cercospora gray leaf, caused by Cercospora spp. This disease is very important in the second season crop or ‘safrinha’. The objective of this study was to evaluate the severity of cercospora leaf spot in transgenic corn hybrids Agroceres Yieldgard AG 9010 YG and Advance NK Agrisure TL (Bt11), using two plant densities: 78,000 and 100,000 plants per hectare. The results showed that the higher density of plants increased the severity of the disease and provided a lower yield. There was no significant interaction between hybrids and severity of the disease. Entre as doen as que incidem na cultura do milho e podem reduzir seu rendimento, há a mancha de cercospora, causada por Cercospora spp., especialmente importante em milho de segunda época, ou ‘safrinha’. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a severidade da cercosporiose em nos híbridos transgênicos de milho Agroceres Yieldgard AG 9010 YG e Advance NK Agrisure TL (Bt11), em duas densidades de cultivo: 78.000 e 100.000 plantas por hectare. Os resultados permitiram constatar que a menor densidade de plantas favoreceu o incremento da severidade da doen a e proporcionou menor rendimento de gr os. Abstract: zaprionus indianus is a dipteran (drosophilidae) with a wide distribution throughout the tropics and temperate palearctic and nearctic regions. there have been proposals to reclassify the genus zaprionus as a subgenus or group of the genus drosophila because various molecular markers have indicated a close relationship between zaprionus species and the immigrans-hirtodrosophila radiation within drosophila. these markers, together with alloenzymes and quantitative traits, have been used to describe the probable scenario for the expansion of zaprionus indianus from its center of dispersal (africa) to regions of asia (ancient dispersal) and the americas (recent dispersal). the introduction of z. indianus into brazil was first reported in 1999 and the current consensus is that the introduced flies came from high-latitude african populations through the importation of fruit. once in brazil, z. indianus spread rapidly throughout the southeast and then to the rest of the country, in association with highway-based fruit commerce. these and other aspects of the evolutionary biology of z. indianus are addressed in this review, including a description of a probable route for this species' dispersal during its recent expansion.

Abstract: a population of sesarma rectum randall, 1840 under the influence of human impact was studied. monthly sampling (cpue, two people during 30 min) took place from august/2001 to july/2002 at an impacted muddy flat in paraty city, state of rio de janeiro (23o13's, 44o42'w). at the laboratory, specimens were classified by sex and measured with a vernier caliper (0.01 mm). the size at the beginning of the sexual maturity was obtained by means of different techniques: in the case of males it was used the allometric procedure and the macroscopic analysis of gonads wile for females, the size of the smallest ovigerous female was also considered. the population structure was evaluated by means the analysis of the variations in the modes of the size frequency distribution. the fecundity was assessed using sub samples of the egg mass. for males, the macroscopic analyses of gonads revealed larger values of carapace width than those obtained with morphometric analysis. males larger than 18.5 mm of carapace width can be considered as mature. for females, such size was 17.4 mm cw. despite of the human impact in the habitat, the population presented to be stable, as indicated by a single mode on the size frequency distribution. the second mode that appeared in some months is probably related to the entrance of juveniles in the population. the sex ratio of this population is closely approximating to 1:1 until crabs reach a carapace width of about 28 mm; after that, males outnumbered females. comparing the fecundity of the present population with a previous study from ubatuba, it can be verified a difference in the number of eggs. the fecundity of paraty's population is significantly lower than the ubatuba's population. this is probably related to the scarcity of food resource in paraty, once no vascular plant can be found in that place. the continuity of reproductive processes and the juvenile recruitment suggest this species is able to live in the area with human impact. the ability

Abstract: a review of the dense transient plasmas researches, developed in the chilean nuclear energy commission, is presented. a brief summary of the researches done in collaboration with the pontificia universidad católica de chile, between 1993 to 1997, is shown. in addition, the program "plasma physics in small devices", developed at the comisión chilena de energía nuclear since 1999 is delineated. the diagnostics development and results obtained during three experiments using small pinch devices are shown: a capillary discharge; a z pinch driven by a small generator; and a low energy plasma focus. the experiments were complemented by magnetohydrodynamics numerical calculations, in order to assist the design and physical interpretation of the experimental data. the diagnostics techniques used in these experiments include current and voltage monitors, multipinhole camera, plasma image using a iccd camera gated from 3 to 20 ns, holographic interferometry, and vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. recently, the pulse power generator speed 2, a medium energy and large current device (187kj, 4ma, 300kv, 400ns, di/dt ~ 10 13 a/s), has been transferred from the düsseldorf university to the comisión chilena de energía nuclear. future experiments, and the perspectives of using this device, are also discussed.

Abstract: it was aimed to study some biological aspects of aphis gossypii glover fed on cotton cultivars allen, ipeaco-sl 21-61131, jpm 781-88-3 and auburn sm 310 in experiments conducted at 25 ± 2oc, 60 ± 10% of rh and 12-hour photophase in a completely randomized design. adult females obtained after the last ecdysis were mantained on leaf disks of those cultivars for 24 hours and from the produced nymphs, one was chosen at random for the conduction of the experiment. the density and the sorts of trichomes on each cultivar were evaluated. the cultivar jpm 781-88-3 enabled the best development of the aphid with a daily production of 4.2 ± 0.1 nymphs/female and a total of 69.2 ± 2.1. on the cultivar ipeaco-sl 22-61131, a lenghtening of the nymphal stage and reduced fecundity took place with a daily mean of 3.0 ± 0.3 nymphs/female and a whole of 54.9 ± 2.2 nymphs/female. the cultivar auburn sm 310 affected the biological cycle of this aphid, reducing its duration. as regards the sorts of trichome, star-shaped non-glandular and glandular structures were identified, with the predominance of the first type. the highest densities of non-glandular trichomes were found on the cultivars allen and ipeaco-sl 21-61131 while the glandular ones occurred in a greater number on the cultivars jpm 781-88-3 and allen. on auburn sm 310 no sort of trichom was found.

Abstract: the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (pemfc) with pt-based anodes is drastically lowered when co-containing hydrogen is used to feed the system, because of the strong adsorption of co on platinum. in the present work the effects of the presence of a conversion layer of co to co2 composed by several m/c materials (where m = mo, cu, fe and w) in gas diffusion anodes formed by pt catalysts were investigated. the diffusion layers formed by mo/c e w/c show good co-tolerance, and this was attributed to the co removal by parallel occurrence of the water-gas shift reaction and the so-called bifunctional mechanism.

Abstract: optimized allocation and/or re-allocation of control and protective devices in distribution networks allows for a better operation and improvement of the reliability indices of the system. control devices (used to reconfigure the feeders) are allocated in distribution networks to obtain an optimal operation strategy to facilitate power supply restoration in the case of a contingency. protective devices (used to isolate faults) are allocated in distribution systems to improve the reliability and continuity of the power supply. it significantly reduces the impacts of faults in terms of customers' outages, and the time needed for fault location and system restoration. in this work, a binary non-linear programming model (bnlp) for the sectionalizing switches and protection devices allocation and/or re-allocation problem is presented. constraints considered for the problem reflect technical and economical limitations, such as in-series protective devices coordination, number of available equipments, importance of the analyzed feeder, circuit topology, quality of power supply and physical limitations of the system. a dedicated reactive tabu search algorithm (rts) is proposed for solving this problem. results and optimized strategies for allocating or re-allocating protection devices and switches considering a real-life network restoration are presented.
