Abstract: this article presents a literature review about the quantification and characterization of total suspended particles (tsp) and inhalable particulate matter (pm 10) generated in open pit coal mining areas. particle matter is a complex pollutant due to its physical characteristics (particle size distribution, morphology and density) and its chemical characteristics (organic and inorganic components, metals, and primary and secondary pollutants). these characteristics are critical to determine the type and the magnitude of their effects on human health. it was found that the different works published in the literature have used lab and field experiments, and also modeling studies. this literature review contributes to improve the understanding and evaluation of technologies that must be used to find solutions to this atmospheric pollution problem.

Abstract: Se presenta una revisión de la literatura sobre la cuantificación y caracterización de partículas suspendidas (PST) y partículas respirables (PM10) producidas en áreas de explotación carbonífera a cielo abierto. El material particulado es un contaminante complejo por sus características físicas (distribución de tama o de partícula, morfología y densidad) y por sus características químicas (compuestos orgánicos e inorgánicos, metales y contaminantes primarios y secundarios). Estas características son críticas para determinar el tipo y magnitud de los efectos sobre la salud humana. Se encontró que los trabajos realizados, han empleado experimentos de laboratorio y de campo, así como estudios de modelación. Esta revisión bibliográfica contribuye a una mejor comprensión y evaluación de las tecnologías que se deben usar para encontrar soluciones a este problema de contaminación. Niveles de Partículas Suspendidas Totales (PST), PM10 y PM2.5 y su Relación en Lugares Públicos de la Ciudad Riohacha, Caribe Colombiano Levels of total suspended particles (TSP), PM10 and PM2.5 and their relationship in public places of the city Riohacha, Colombian Caribbean

Abstract: Se determinaron las concentraciones de partículas suspendidas totales (PST) y partículas menores de 10 y 2.5 micrómetros (PM10 y PM2.5) en la zona urbana del municipio de Riohacha, Colombia. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron un muestreador de alto volumen para PST y PM10 y un muestreador de bajo volumen (Partisol) para las partículas PM2.5, todo en seis estaciones de monitoreo. Los resultados mostraron que el promedio de la concentración de PM10 varió desde 43,69 a 19,47 μg/m3, las PST de 86,02 a 27,38 μg/m3 y las PM2.5 mostraron un promedio de 14.57 μg/m3. Las relaciones PM10/PST variaron desde 0,50 a 0.68. Las seis estaciones presentaron buena correlación PST/PM10 (R = 0,795). Las PST pueden implicar presencia de partículas PM10 en el área urbana esta ciudad, pero las concentraciones de PM10 no necesariamente indican presencia de partículas PM2.5 (R= 0,035). Los resultados de correlación de PM10/PST son similares a estudios realizados en otras zonas urbanas de Colombia y de otros países. The concentrations of total suspended particles (TSP) and particles with size below 10 and 2.5 micrometers (PM10 and PM2.5) in the urban area of the city of Riohacha in Colombia were determined. The instruments used were a high-volume sampler for TSP and PM10 and a low-volume sampler (Partisol) for PM2.5, all in six monitoring stations. The results showed that the average PM10 concentrations ranged from 43.69 to 19.47 μg/m3, the PST ranged from 86.02 to 27.38 μg/m3 and the average for PM2.5 was 14.57 μg/m3. Relations PM10/PST ranged from 0.50 to 0.68. The six stations showed good correlation PST/PM10 (R=0.795). The PST can imply the presence of PM10 particles in the urban area of this city but PM10 concentrations not necessarily indicate the presence of PM2.5 particles (R=0.035). The results for the correlation PM10/PST are similar to studies conducted in other urban areas of Colombia and of other countries.

Abstract: We give a new and detailed description of the structure of cut loci, with direct applications to the singular sets of some Hamilton-Jacobi equations. These sets may be non-triangulable, but a local description at all points except for a set of Hausdorff dimension $n-2$ is well known. We go further in this direction by giving a clasification of all points up to a set of Hausdorff dimension $n-3$.

Abstract: We study the singular locus of solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations with a Hamiltonian independent of $u$. In a previous paper, we proved that the singular locus is what we call a balanced split locus. In this paper, we find and classify all balanced split sets, identifying the cases where the only balanced split locus is the singular locus, and the cases where this doesn't hold. This clarifies the relationship between viscosity solutions and the more classical approach of characteristics and shocks.

Abstract: The parasites Leishmania spp., Trypanosoma brucei, and Trypanosoma cruzi are the trypanosomatid protozoa that cause the deadly human diseases leishmaniasis, African sleeping sickness, and Chagas disease, respectively. These organisms possess unique mechanisms for gene expression such as constitutive polycistronic transcription of protein-coding genes and trans-splicing. Little is known about either the DNA sequences or the proteins that are involved in the initiation and termination of transcription in trypanosomatids. In silico analyses of the genome databases of these parasites led to the identification of a small number of proteins involved in gene expression. However, functional studies have revealed that trypanosomatids have more general transcription factors than originally estimated. Many posttranslational histone modifications, histone variants, and chromatin modifying enzymes have been identified in trypanosomatids, and recent genome-wide studies showed that epigenetic regulation might play a very important role in gene expression in this group of parasites. Here, we review and comment on the most recent findings related to transcription initiation and termination in trypanosomatid protozoa.
