Psicologia & Sociedade , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822007000200010
Abstract: affirmative actions are social measures that seek to democratize the access to jobs and education. in brazilian higher education, those actions consist of programs of vacancy quotes in universities for historically excluded social groups. the issue is complex in relation to defining ethnical and/or social criteria. the aim of this article, using state-of-art literature review, is to contribute in the discussion about affirmative action in brazilian higher education, based on the survey of the state of the art in the last five years. electronic data bases were used (scopus and jstor) and bardin's (1977) content analysis was carried out. the results were organized into three analysis units: (a) a dichotomy existing between articles for and against the measures; (b) improvement on the debate about "diversity"; and (c) a dialectical, more integrated and reflective view. the findings contributed for elucidating the current state of affirmative action in the brazilian context of devising public policies for higher education.

Abstract: evaluation of career intervention strategies is considered relevant in international literature. this study aimed at evaluating career interventions carried out at a clinic-service delivered by a psychology course at a brazilian state university. seventy-seven former clients, aged between 17-24 years old, with prevalence of females, and attended in groups, participated in this study. the intervention evaluation was based on french, hiebert and bezanzon's model, which contains three dimensions of analysis (input, processes and output). the questionnaire, forwarded by post, consisted of open and closed questions that contemplated three dimensions: inputs, processes and outcomes. the quantitative data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, and the qualitative data by means of content analysis. in summary, the former clients evaluated the service conditions positively and attributed positive value to the activities and themes developed in the interventions. the need for more career information and service expansion were suggested.

Abstract: having in view the importance of family, chiefly parents, in adolescents' vocational development, as seen in the literature, this study aimed at contributing with a systematization of production of knowledge about the influence of parents on their adolescent children's career choice. this is an illustrative, not representative study. the corpus for analysis constituted of papers, books, theses and dissertations found in electronic data bases and university libraries. the publications were systematized according to the prevailing theoretical approaches in the analyzed texts. the results showed that, whatever the approaches are, parental influence occurs continuously in the interaction processes within family groups. despite this observation, a lack of studies about interventions carried out directly with parents of adolescents in career-choice processes was verified to exist in the brazilian context.

Abstract: university quotas are measures that aim to increase the possibilities of entrance into higher education by specific social groups. that is an embracing issue that addresses not only the scarceness of vacancies in higher education, but also aspects about subjectivity and ethnic-racial issues. this study aims to analyze the opinion about university quotas by a group of students attending preparatory courses. in this study, 107 students have participated and were distributed into two groups: group a (communitarian courses, n = 53) and group b (private courses, n = 54). the study was conducted in two stages: (1) application of quotas' questionnaire, and (2) individual interviews. results point out that the university quotas issue is superficially explored and stereotyped by students. the social criteria to define quotas was more accepted by them than the ethnic-racial one. finally, the paper proposes that debates about university quotas should be furthered targeting to supervise practices.

Abstract: in this paper we describe the profile of senior undergraduates attending courses in chemistry, biological sciences and psychology in a brazilian public university. we propose to study the influence of socio-demographic and academic variables () on their career. the 140 participants answered a questionnaire on socio-demographic variables: parental education, family income, social-economical level and type of elementary and high school (public or private) they attend. the academic variables (marks) were obtained from the university files. the data about career paths were obtained from interviews with six participants. the data were analyzed both quantitatively, according to unvaried models - the square q test, the non-parametrical test: kruskal-wallis and mann-whitney and qualitatively, according to bardin (1977). both national and international theoretical frameworks underpinned the discussion. the study reveals that parental education, socio-economical level and type of elementary and high school attended are directly related to their success in the university entrance tests and career choice.

Abstract: this study, of the type "state of the art" type, aims at the analysis of the brazilian scientific production about the psychologist's professional identity. scientific papers that contained the keywords: identity, professional and psychologist were analyzed. publications from 1991 to 2008 were analyzed: 15 articles published in journals, 4 master's theses, 3 chapters from books, 3 abstracts published in the annals of scientific events, and 2 doctorate dissertations. the publications were systematized and classified into two categories: (1) the construction of the psychologist's professional identity, with three subcategories - the choice of psychology as a profession, academic training in psychology and professional practicing, and (2) the paradigm changes in professional practice. the results showed that the psychologist's identity is seen as the outcome of an integrated set of personal and professional factors that influence the development of their career. besides that, the studies point out the need for change in the professional practice, from traditional paradigms, centered on the individual, into paradigms anchored on social perspectives, which are more in accordance with the brazilian reality.
