Happily Ever after: The Use of Stories to Promote Positive Interventions  [PDF]
Daniel J. Tomasulo, James O. Pawelski
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2012.312A176
Abstract:

People turn to myriad ways to achieve happiness, such as physical pleasures, relationships, or the achievement of goals. Success in these endeavors varies, however, and may not be sustainable. Recent advances in scientific research may be able to help, with a number of studies suggesting that people have the power to increase happiness through intentional activities. Narrative is one of the most pervasive and promising elements of positive interventions, and stories play a significant role both in psychological research and in application. A proposal is made that stories should be used more frequently as a vehicle to demonstrate and encourage the use of positive interventions, and a suggestion is made on how to collect and disseminate them.

Spectral Shifts of Semiconductor Clusters
Antonietta Tomasulo,Mushti V. Ramakrishnai
Physics , 1995, DOI: 10.1142/S0218625X96000255
Abstract: The shifts of the electronic absorption spectra of GaAs and GaP semiconductor clusters are calculated using accurate pseudopotentials. In the absence of experimental data at present, these calculations provide estimates of expected spectral shifts in these clusters. In addition, these calculations show that Coulomb interaction between the electron and hole dominates over the confinement energy in small clusters, with the result that the electronic absorption spectra of small clusters exhibit redshift instead of blueshift as the cluster size is decreased.
Quantum Confinement Effects in Semiconductor Clusters II
Antonietta Tomasulo,Mushti V. Ramakrishna
Physics , 1995, DOI: 10.1063/1.472232
Abstract: The band gaps and spectral shifts of CdS, CdSe, CdTe, AlP, GaP, GaAs, and InP semiconductor clusters are calculated from band structure calculations using accurate local and non-local empirical pseudopotentials. The effect of spin-orbit coupling on the band structures is included in the calculations when they are important. The complete set of pseudopotential parameters and full computational details are reported for all these semiconductors. The calculated spectral shifts of zinc-blende and wurtzite CdS, wurtzite CdSe, and zinc-blende InP clusters are in good agreement with experiments over a range of cluster sizes. The effect of crystal structure on the band gaps is small in large clusters but becomes important in small clusters. In the absence of experimental data, our calculations provide reasonable estimates of expected spectral shifts for the other clusters. These results demonstrate that the empirical pseudopotential method yields unique insights into the quantum confinement effects and is a powerful tool for calculating the spectral shifts of semiconductor clusters.
The Hazards of Misusing the Smart Contract: An AHP Approach to Its Risk  [PDF]
Romulo Luciano
Journal of Information Security (JIS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/jis.2019.101002
Abstract: This article explores four critical groups of systematic risk embedded in smart contract employment using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The four principal risk analysis groups include: 1) transparency in the light of corporate governance 2) IT security 3) contract management automation and 4) legality. The AHP assists both decision-makers and stakeholders alike in the evaluation process essential for identifying potential technological constraints posed within a permissioned blockchain environment using peer-to-peer format in the absence of digital currency. Based upon critical assessment, the AHP methodology enables pairwise comparisons among different features and consequently increases the knowledge regarding these attributes in light of the software’s risk assessment.
Everolimus Associated with Activated Vitamin D for Post-Transplant Increase Epstein-Barr-Virus Load Treatment. Two Case Reports  [PDF]
Luciano Moscarelli, Giulia Antognoli
International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2012.37119
Abstract:

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) is an uncommon but life-threatening complication of solid-organ and blood stem-cell transplants. It is caused by an uncontrolled expansion of B lymphocytes infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It responds poorly to therapy, including reduction of immunosuppression, interferon, antivirals or chemotherapy. Therefore the optimal strategy for management is currently focused on prevention. Some centers have already introduced chemoprophylaxis and/or preemptive strategies using EBV viral load as a surveillance. Some experimental studies suggest that mTOR inhibitors inhibits growth of human EBV-transformed B lymphocytes and vitamin D had an immune response to EBV. We report two cases of an increased of blood BKV viral load after renal transplantation that were successfully treated with everolimus in association with calcitriol. This report suggests that everolimus associated with calcitriol could be an effective and safe treatment for the prevention of PTLD in transplant recipients.

Epidemic Propagation: An Automaton Model as the Continuous SIR Model  [PDF]
Luciano Misici, Filippo Santarelli
Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/am.2013.410A3011
Abstract:

The use of the SIR model to predict the time evolution of an epidemic is very frequent and has spatial information about its propagation which may be very useful to contrast its spread. In this paper we take a particular cellular automaton model that well reproduces the time evolution of the disease given by the SIR model; setting the automaton is generally an annoying problem because we need to run a lot of simulations, compare them to the solution of the SIR model and, finally, decide the parameters to use. In order to make this procedure easier, we will show a fast method that, in input, requires the parameters of the SIR continuous model that we want to reproduce, whereas, in output, it yields the parameters to use in the cellular automaton model. The problem of computing the most suitable parameters for the reticular model is reduced to the problem of finding the roots of a polynomial Equation.

Properties and Structure of Microcrystalline Chitosan and Hydroxyapatite Composites  [PDF]
Luciano Pighinelli, Magdalena Kucharska
Journal of Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology (JBNB) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jbnb.2014.52015
Abstract:

The skeletal system in the human body is very important, provides support and gives shape to the body and provides a network between all soft tissues. The most common problems in hard tissues are bone fractures, defects or diseases which needed to be treated. The developments in artificial bone area seem to solve most of the hard tissue problems, on the other hand artificial bones themselves may cause other problems and in many cases they do not have sufficient mechanical properties and/or good biocompatibility. The importance of chitosan and its derivatives like microcrystalline chitosan has grown significantly over the last two decades due to its renewable and biodegradable source, and also because of the increase in the knowledge of its functionality in the technological and biomedical applications. The excellent biocompability, biofunctionality, and non-antigenic property make the chitosan and its derivatives as a microcrystalline chitosan an ideal material for tissue regeneration. To improve the suitability of chitosan for bone tissue engineering, the composites of MCCh and hydroxyapatite were studied. In the present work the characterization of the MCCh and composites with HAp in form of films and sponges, is based on physico-chemical tests, morphology, structure, particle size of HAp powder and distribution in the polymer matrix. The compositions with film and sponge shape are derived from the junction of two different materials, containing organic and inorganic substances. All sponge preparations, with HAp/MCCh have a well-shaped 3-dimensional structure, which could be used as implants in orthopedic surgery for a scaffolds base for medical applications.
