Abstract: Few studies have registered signs of mutilation on cetaceans in Brazil, especially from shark attacks. This work describes interactions between cookiecutter sharks Isistius spp. and cetaceans through the analysis of bite records for cetacean carcasses washed ashore on the Bahia coast between 1996 and 2005. Twenty bite records were analyzed in 13 cetacean species, of which the Delphinidae family was the most frequent. After the analysis, Isistius plutodus was identified as the aggressor species on 80% of the records, followed by I. brasiliensis (20%), based on the characteristic shape of the mutilations. The areas most subject to attack in cetaceans were: flanks 40%; head and abdomen 20% each; dorsal 15%; and genital with 5%. The relatively high number of bites on the flanks was probably due to its larger area, which offered greater opportunities to the cookiecutter shark. At least three bite records were related to the possible causes of strandings in delphinids. We recommend further studies on interactions between sharks and cetaceans along the Brazilian coast.
Estudo das comunidades de aranhas (Arachnida: Araneae) em ambiente de Mata Atlantica no Parque Metropolitano de Pitua?u - PMP, Salvador, Bahia

Abstract: the pitua?u metropolitan park (pmp) is a secondary atlantic rainforest remnant with 425ha. new studies on ecology dynamics can help its management plan implementation and conservation. this paper analyses the border effect over the composition, diversity and richness of spider species in the pmp. the methods used were: nocturnal manual collection (cmn), and beating trays (ge). twelve sampling units were randomly chosen (6 on the border and 6 on the interior) totalling an effort of 24 hours and 240 shrubs. spider richness was estimated using bootstrap, diversity using shannon - wiener (h). the similarity index of jaccard was used to estimate the level of equality between the species composition in each unit. the statistical analysis were carried out using estimates?, biostat 2.0? and diversity? packages. comparisons betwenn spider richness were made using anova. a total of 948 specimens were collected. of these, 272 were adults, belonging to 80 species and 20 families. bootstrap estimated 32 species for ge in the center and 34 on the border. concerning cmn, estimates were of 45 species in the center and 53 on the border, verifying that for both sampling methods there was no significant difference between the areas (anova p>0,05). in relation to diversity, shannon-wiener index found that for both sampling methods the diversity was higher on the border than in the center. these results show that there is a significant difference between the habitats located on the border and in the center. jaccard similarity index resulted in 32,2% for cmn and 20,9% for ge between the border and centre, indicating that there is a low level of similarity between the species composition of these areas. among the dominant species in the center habitat, the orbweaving spiders were dominant, which was not observed on the remnant's border, where the runner spiders were dominant. the presence of a higher diversity of spider species on the border of the fragment is an unexpected result, since

Abstract: five cases of hepatitis b and d superinfection in teenagers from the northernmost region of mato grosso state are reported. hepatitis b is high prevalent there, but not hepatitis d. the proximity to the states of acre and amazonas and intense migration may be introducing the virus into the region. necessity for the surveillance of hepatitis d in northern mato grosso is emphasized.

Hepatitis B virus screening in contacts of blood donors with antibodies against core protein (anti-HBc), but without surface antigen (HBsAg)

Abstract: to increase blood safety brazil introduced screening for anti-hbc among blood donors in 1993. there was a decrease in the hepatitis b virus (hbv) transmission, but this measure identified a great number of hbsag-negative, anti-hbc-positive donors. surveillance policy determines that contacts of hbv carriers should be screened to hbv markers, but there is no recommendation about how to guide contacts of hbsag-negative, anti-hbc-positive donors. aiming to evaluate whether the contacts of this group are at greater risk for hbv infection, a cross-sectional study was performed to compare prevalence of hbv infection between contacts of hbsag-positive blood donors (group i) and contacts of hbsag-negative, anti-hbc-positive donors (group ii). contacts were submitted to a questionnaire and blood tests for hbv markers. in group i (n = 143), 53 (37.1%) were anti-hbc-positive and 11 (7.7%) were hbsag-positive. in group ii (n = 111), there were 9 and 0.9%, respectively. hbv exposure was associated with group i, sexual activity, blood transfusion, being one of the donor's parents, and living for more than ten years with the donor. regarding the families as sample units, it was more common to find at least one member with hbv markers (p < 0.05) among the families of group i compared to group ii. contacts of hbsag-negative, anti-hbc-positive individuals presented a much lower risk of having already been exposed to hbv and there is no need to screen them for hbv in low to moderate prevalence populations.

Abstract: high levels of fe and mn present in some soils and compost organic matter decrease the resolution of 13c nmr spectra of humic substances. addition of kcl up to a concentration of 0,03 mol l-1 to humic substances extracts followed by centrifugation is an efficient method of eliminating clays and minerals containing high levels of paramagnetic metals such as fe and mn thus increasing the resolution of 13c nmr spectra.

Abstract: supplemental tests using immunoblot are recommended to improve specificity of anti-hcv by elisa. in brazil immunoblot is not officially recommended. aiming to identify eia false-positive rate 70 positive eia anti-hcv blood donors were submitted to 3rd generation immunoblot at hemocentro of mato grosso state where polymerase chain reaction tests are not performed. there were 44 (62.9%) immunoblot-positive, 22 (31.4%) negative and 4 (5.7%) indeterminate. anti-hcv immunoblot can distinguish blood donors with false-positive elisa from those who need medical assessment. our data suggest that immunoblot could be useful in brazilian blood banks where molecular biology tests are not available.

Abstract: identification of anopheles nuneztovari gabaldón and an. goeldii rozeboom and gabaldón based on the male genitalia traits is discussed. an. goeldii is in the synonymy of an. nuneztovari, however, characters of the aedeagus of male genitalia distinguish both species. we hypothesize that an. goeldii may be a valid species, however, further studies using molecular characters, especially its2 rdna sequences will be necessary to elucidate the taxonomic status of the species. an. konderi galv?o and damasceno and an. forattinii wilkerson and sallum are registered for the first time in the state of amapá.
