Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492009000600006
Abstract: purpose: to quantify the relation between eye and eyelids placement in different positions during downgaze and upgaze in healthy subjects. methods: the position of the eye and eyelids of 10 healthy individuals was quantified by palpebral fissure image processing with nih image software. upper and lower mid-pupil margin distance was measured in 7 positions: -30, -20, -10, 0, +10, +20 and +30 degrees (positive signs correspond to upgaze and negative signs to downgaze) along vertical meridian. results: the upper mid-pupil margin distance decreases in upgaze and even more in downgaze. the lower mid-pupil margin distance increases in upgaze and decreases in downgaze. about the palpebral fissure height, it gets larger in upgaze until 20 degrees and smaller in downgaze. conclusion: our data showed that the interpalpebral fissure height varies with vertical meridian gaze amplitude and that considerations about mid-pupil margin distance must consider the amount of upgaze or downgaze.

Faria Filho, Luciano Mendes de;Gon?alves, Irlen Antnio;Vidal, Diana Gon?alves;Paulilo, André Luiz;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022004000100008
Abstract: the concern with the issue of school culture has arisen in the context of a turn taken by the works in the history of education and of an ever so fruitful confluence with the discipline of history, be it for the practice of gathering, organization and expansion of the documental mass of data to be used in the analyses, be it by the acceptance of legitimacy protocols from the historiographic narrative. the article represents a synthesis of the investigations that have been conducted by researchers, and intends to apprehend how school culture has been taken on board by the field of history of brazilian education as a category of analysis and as a topic of study. to such purpose, the paper is composed of three parts. the first part deals with the most commonly used definitions of school culture. works by dominique julia, andré chervel, jean-claude forquin and antónio vi?ao frago are focused here in an attempt to establish similarities and differences between the ideas of the various authors. the dissemination of these texts in brazil is also discussed in this first part. the second part of the article, without any intention of representing a complete bibliographic review or a comprehensive listing of titles and authors, draws attention to some of the dimensions of the brazilian education reality, which the researchers have been trying to understand with the aid of the notion of school culture. finally, the article points out some of the challenges that have to be faced in carrying on these studies and in strengthening the theoretical-methodological foundations of the studies that use the general framework discussed here.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to determine the inheritance of acylsugar contents in tomato genotypes, from the f2 generation of the third backcross of l. esculentum mill. 'tom-584', after the original cross with the wild accession l. pennellii 'la-716'. acylsugar contents in tomato leaflets were measured according to a methodology for reducing sugars determination. the data obtained were evaluated with chi-square tests of monogenic hypotheses of inheritance, under different presumed degrees of dominance, and also under genetic models with the maximum likelihood function, in which presence of a major gene and possible polygenes with additive and non additive effects were tested. for the different presumed degrees of dominance (dd) tested in an array between -0.7 and -0.4, the hypotheses of monogenic inheritance could not be rejected, indicating that high acylsugar contents are controlled by a recessive allele in a locus with incomplete dominance. genetic models tested under the maximum likelihood function also confirmed the hypothesis of monogenic inheritance. tomato plants with adequate levels of acylsugar-mediated resistance to arthropod pests can be efficiently obtained in backcross populations, derived from the interspecific cross l. esculentum x l. pennellii.

Jacovine, Laércio Antnio Gon?alves;Machado, Carlos Cardoso;Souza, Amaury Paulo de;Leite, Helio Garcia;Minetti, Luciano José;
Revista árvore , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622005000300006
Abstract: operational quality was assessed in five harvesting subsystems adopted by brazilian forest companies that use wood for cellulose and fiber sheets. the short log system is used by the companies and the subsystems are 1) harvest + forwarder; 2) slingshot + forwarder; 3) chainsaw + manual; 4) chainsaw + forwarder and 5) chainsaw and tow. stump height and fracture range, damaged stumps with splinters covered by branches and split; log length and logs with 'hooks' were assessed to obtain operational quality. no subsystem met all the quality specifications for the items assessed, and it can be inferred that the operational quality should be improved in all of them. no subsystem was shown to be better than another, as one was better in some items but worse in others. regardless of the subsystem used, control setting is fundamental to identify and solve the problems that affect the quality of operations in forest harvesting.

Abstract: The solid waste management is a challenge for the public manager of any level of government and in any municipality. Th is work studies solid waste disposal in the VIIIth Hydrographic Region, which encompasses the municipalities of Casimiro de Abreu, Macaé, Nova Friburgo and Rio das Ostras, located in Macaé and Das Ostras rivers and in Imboacica Lagoon hydrographic basins. For this purpose, a questionnaire was given to municipalities with the intent of obtaining information about the provision and management of solid waste for each one. Preliminary results showed that there are two licensed landfills in this area, in Macaé and in Rio das Ostras cities, and that Nova Friburgo has a not licensed landfi ll. Th e tonnage of waste collected per day is: Macaé - 320 t / day; Nova Friburgo - 150 t / day, Rio das Ostras - 70 t / day and Casimiro de Abreu - 30 t / day. In this context, compatibilization among economic growth, social development and environmental protection in order to create solutions for waste final destination problems is necessary.
