Abstract: This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the leadership style of swimming coaches from the state of Paraná, Brazil. The trial subjects were 33 male athletes (67.3%), 16 female athletes (32.7%), and six coaches. Data collection occurred during the final phase of the Parana 2010 Open Games. The measuring instrument used was the Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS). For data analysis we used the Shapiro Wilk test, Mann-Whitney, the Manova, and Post Hoc of Scheffe (p <0.05). The results showed that comparing between the perception and preference of athletes there were significant differences in dimension of training instruction (p = 0.001), reinforcement (p = 0.008), and democratic style (p = 0.020), male athletes have a greater preference for autocratic behavior than female athletes (p = 0.031), there was no significant difference between the dimensions: perception of athletes and self-perception of coaches. We reached the conclusion that the swimming coaches from the state of Paraná have the democratic style, using reinforcement and training-instruction as tactical and technical resources for their coaching; the champion team coach had a profile similar to what is currently preferred by athletes which, according to literature, would be the ideal one to achieve success in sports.

Abstract: the main disease of the guava (psidium guajava l.), after harvesting, is anthracnose, caused by glomerella cingulata and colletotrichum gloeosporioides. this pathogen and chemical residues of fungicides in fruits are considered the mains problems for exportation. in this work was evaluated the fungitoxic effect of extracts, decoctions and essential oils of medicinal and aromatic plants in the mycelium growth of the pathogens, in vitro, to be recommended as an alternative to chemical control in postharvest. to prepare the aquous extracts a 10% and the decoctions (sub-products of hydrodistillation) were added in pda medium, autoclaved and distributed into petri dishes. the essential oils were added in three equidistant points by petri dishes contening pda medium. discs of the isolates of the pathogen were placed on the center of the petri dishes. the fungitoxic effect was evaluated by measuring the diameter of the colonies when the pathogens or any other treatment reached the border of the petri dishes. the aquous extract and the essential oil from the clove inhibit in 100% of g. cingulata and c. gloeosporioides growth, and the last one was totally inhibited by the essential oil of the lemon grass. the decoctions of rosemary, ginger, calendula, orange (citrus sinensis) showed inhibition potencial to control both isolates of the pathogen. in the control of c. gloeosporioides also had good results the decoctions of mayweed, chamomile and tagetes. the total or partial mycelium growth inhibition of the glomerella cingulata e colletotrichum gloeosporioides showed the existence of compounds biologically actives with fungitoxic effect, in the extracts, decoctions and essential oils of medicinal and aromatic plants. this indicated a potential application of this products as an alternative to control anthracnose in guavas fruits.

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of two experimental pastes containing propolis extract associated with calcium hydroxide against polymicrobial cultures collected from 16 necrotic and fistulae root canals in primary molars of 4-8-year-old children of both sexes. the agar-well diffusion technique was used to determine the antimicrobial activity of the following pastes: 11.0% ethanolic extract of propolis (eep) + calcium hydroxide; and 11.0% extract of propolis without ethanol (ep) + calcium hydroxide. eep, ep and the association of calcium hydroxide and propylene glycol (chp) was used as the positive control groups, and propylene glycol was used as a negative control group. friedman and wilcoxon tests were used to compare the data from the microbial growth inhibition zones (p<0.05). paste 1 and paste 2 showed larger growth inhibition zones against microorganisms from root canal samples than chp (p=0.021 and 0.003, respectively). paste 2 tended to have larger growth inhibition zones than paste 1 (p=0.053). the association between propolis and calcium hydroxide was effective in controlling dental infections in vitro.
An application of the Strategic Games Matrix for competitive and cooperative strategies modeling for the firms of a textile and apparel business cluster

Sistemas & Gest?o , 2008,
Abstract: Despite the need of a generalized collaboration environment required to the implementation of any well-succeeded business cluster, the unavoidable decision-making autonomy and the free enterprise context among the companies, usually operating as multiple and complex supply chains, induce them to pursue their own interests, disconsidering the interest of other agents involved. Such companies, whether competing or cooperating with each other, naturally give rise to different conflict of interest situations among themselves, that need to be modeled, treated, conciliated, and managed. In this paper, a cooperative and competitive strategy modeling to treat the relationships among clustered companies is presented, based on concepts of the Games Theory. This work proposes the application of a methodology of analysis of these complex industrial arrangements using the Strategic Games Matrix (SGM) as the conceptual framework. It shows that SGM is an useful analytical and managerial support tool to deal with the multiple conflicts of interest among the several agents in a cluster, both for descriptive and prescriptive purposes. This methodology is applied to the so-called Pólo-Tec-Tex (Technological Pole of Textile Industries), a textile and apparel industrial and commercial cluster of companies, in the region of Americana city, in S o Paulo state.

The Strategic Games Matrix (SGM) as a new tool for strategic management via game theory.

Sistemas & Gest?o , 2006,
Abstract: This paper develops and presents some original game theory concepts utilizations for the formulation of company’s cooperative and competitive strategies, having as basis the Strategic Games Matrix (SGM). The concepts and results from SGM are applied to analysis and formulation of entrepreneurial strategies, as a support tool to complex business structures strategic management – hierarchical or not – and for competitive and/or cooperative strategies, or a combinations of those. It is proposed a new typology for business strategic games derived from an analysis and interpretation of the SGM: Four classic strategic games types from game theory – Nash, Minimax, and Pareto, as non-hierarchical games, and Stackelberg, as a hierarchical game – are interpreted and applied to some conflict of interests situations; two new hierarchical strategic game types, applicable to limit-case situations, also derived from the SGM analysis – Dominant-Marginal, and Paternalist-Solidary – are also described and applied. A new methodology for analysis and design of competitive and cooperative strategy formulation for complex hierarchical structures strategic management, based on the SGM, is presented and applied to three level hierarchical games. The concepts of strategic scene-gaming, and of strategic dynamic positioning, are also introduced and illustrated.

Sistemas & Gest?o , 2009,
