Population ecology of Eligmodontia morgani (Rodentia, Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) in northwestern Patagonia
Monteverde,Martín; Piudo,Luciana; Hodara,Karina; Douglass,Richard;
Ecolog?-a austral , 2011,
Abstract: eligmodontia morgani is one of the most abundant endemic species of arid patagonian steppe. most previous studies have focused on systematics and taxonomy and ecological information on this species is scarce. the objectives of this study were to estimate population parameters for e. morgani in the patagonian steppe ecoregion and to compare them to parameters available for this species in another environment. data were collected from february 2003 through october 2004. abundances ranged from 12±1.85 to 71±6.67, with residents comprising 39% of the population. the sex ratio was female biased and age classes resulted in juveniles body mass ≤11 g, subadults between 13-15 g, and adults ≥17g. the breeding season lasted from august to march. the home range sizes were 659.72±90.55 m2 for females and 439.58±114.54 m2 for males. the comparison of present results with those obtained in the subandean district within the patagonian steppe ecoregion showed similar home range sizes and residency but a different proportion of e. morgani in the total number of rodent captures, trap success, and sex ratio. the ability of this species to occupy diverse arid environments of patagonia may evidence a significant ecological niche breadth.

Prebisch y Urquidi: vidas paralelas
Joseph Hodara
Araucaria , 2008,
Hawkes processes with variable length memory and an infinite number of components
Pierre Hodara,Eva L?cherbach
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: In this paper, we build a model for biological neural nets where the activity of the network is described by Hawkes processes having a variable length memory. The particularity of this paper is to deal with an infinite number of components. We propose a graphical construction of the process and we build, by means of a perfect simulation algorithm, a stationary version of the process. To carry out this algorithm, we make use of a Kalikow-type decomposition technique. Two models are described in this paper. In the first model, we associate to each edge of the interaction graph a saturation threshold that controls the influence of a neuron on another. In the second model, we impose a structure on the interaction graph leading to a cascade of spike trains. Such structures, where neurons are divided into layers can be found in retina.

Developing Standards for Language Teacher Education Programs in Indonesia: Professionalizing or Losing in Complexity?
Luciana Luciana
TEFLIN Journal , 2004,
Abstract: Setting standards for language teacher education programs, materials, and evaluation sparks some hope in attempts to improve the quality of the programs. Yet, this very fact augmented by my examination of ten language teacher education programs in Java, Bali, and Lampung (FKIP and PGRI) triggers a critical look at the idea of standard development. In particular, I would like to explore whether it can lead to a better professionalism or we are just lost in the complexity of the standardization itself. This paper consists of four sections. Departing from an overview of language teacher education programs in Indonesia and the theoretical foundations, some major problems in this area are identified. Following this, the discussion is focused on the idea of standard development for language teacher education programs in Indonesia. Eventually, some suggestions are put forth to highlight the need for establishing coherent curriculum framework bridging the two realms of language teacher education and school milieu as well as providing learners with knowledge base that enables them to cope with complex demands of school settings and more essentially, to act as an agent in the social change process.
Maintenance or Emergence of Chronic Phase Secondary Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte Responses after Loss of Acute Phase Immunodominant Responses Does Not Protect SIV-Infected Rhesus Macaques from Disease Progression

Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology , 2010, DOI: 10.1155/2010/279391
Abstract: The simian immunodeficiency virus- (SIV-) infected rhesus macaque is the preferred animal model for vaccine development, but the correlates of protection in this model are not completely understood. In this paper, we document the cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response to SIV and its effects on viral evolution in an effort to identify events associated with disease progression regardless of MHC allele expression. We observed the evolution of epitopes targeted by CTLs in a group of macaques that included long-term nonprogressing (LTNP), slowly progressing (SP), normally progressing (NP), and rapidly progressing (RP) animals. Collectively, our data (1) identify novel CTL epitopes from an SP animal that are not restricted by known protective alleles, (2) illustrate that, in this small study, RP and NP animals accrue more mutations in CTL epitopes than in SP or LTNP macaques, and (3) demonstrate that the loss of CTL responses to immunodominant epitopes is associated with viral replication increases, which are not controlled by secondary CTL responses. These findings provide further evidence for the critical role of the primary cell-mediated immune responses in the control of retroviral infections.
