Abstract: Canine cutaneous leishmaniasis by Leishmania braziliensis is a neglected, but widespread disease of dogs in South America. This paper describes clinical and hematological alterations in 17 L. braziliensis-infected dogs from Brazil. The most common hematological findings were thrombocytopenia (82.4%), anemia (70.6%), low packed cell volume (52.9%) and eosinophilia (41.2%). Twelve (70.6%) dogs displayed at least one evident physical alteration; 11 dogs (64.7%) presented skin lesions, four (23.5%) had weight loss and two (11.8%) onychogryphosis. L. braziliensis-infected dogs present clinical and hematological signs often observed in dogs infected by other pathogens. This indicates that veterinarians and public health workers should not consider the presence of non-specific clinical signs as diagnostic criteria for visceral leishmaniasis in dogs living endemic areas to avoid misdiagnosis and subsequent elimination of dogs infected by L. braziliensis.

Abstract: The study aimed at obtaining basic information about estrous cycle in rats treated with dexamethasone, for polycystic ovaries, induced by constant illumination. It was used 30 female rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) from the lineage Wistar, with 90 days years old, divided according the following groups: Group I - rats maintained in a light/dark cycle for 12/12 hours, and after 100 days submitted to the cyclicity evaluation (control); Group II - rats maintained under constant illumination during 100 days and after submitted to the cyclicity evaluation; Group III - rats maintained under constant illumination during 100 days and after treated with dexamethasone for five days, and, then, submitted to the cyclicity evaluation. The results showed that after 100 days of experiment, the animals from group I presented a normal cyclicity, being observed the four phases of the cycle. In the animals of groups II and III, it was observed a higher incidence in the estrous phase, with 85% and 76,5% respectively, characterizing the state of permanent estrous. It was observed the phase of diestrous with 15% in group II, and 23,5% in group III, not being observed the phases of proestrous and metaestrous. After treatment with dexamethasone, it was verified a great reduction in the estrous phases in the animals from group III, what was also observed in the animals from group II, reaching numbers of 34,5% and 20,85%, respectively. Yet, there was an increase in the diestrous phase in group II (64,57%), and group III (75%). It has been noticed in these groups the presence of the proestrous phase with 0,92% in group II and 4,15% in group III, not being observed the metaestrous phase. The treatment with dexamethasone during five days produces, more rapidly, a possible retake of the estrous cycle in rats with ovarian polycystic ovaries El objetivo del estudio fue obtener información básica del ciclo estral en ratones tratados con dexametasona, en ovarios poliquísticos, inducidos por iluminación continua. The bone material is radically different to any other material tried by the classic mechanics, its structure is heterogeneous and anisótropic, and its mechanical properties not vary alone among different individuals, but also, for oneself bone In the medical treatments and surgical interventions where it is present the readaptation, the induced growth of the bone can be modeled by means of the employment of the approaches of remodeling bone intern proposed by some authors (Cowin and R. Huiskes, R. Crankcase, I will Doblare & García, Jacob & Beaupré and other).In this work it takes the pattern of bone remodelling proposed by Jacob (1994) and it is implemented with the use of the software Abaqus using user's subroutine (UMAT), its applies a model 2D of generic bone with a system of loads to check the effects of the remodelling and the variations of the values of density. As part of the work two software were created for the prosecution of the data, for an analysis of results outside of the visualizador of the Abaqus, achieving a qualitative and quantitative appreciation of the result.

Revista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária , 2009, DOI: 10.4322/rbpv.01803014
Abstract: this article presents the results of a study on ectoparasites infesting rural dogs in pernambuco, northeastern brazil. forty-one dogs from a rural community of pernambuco were examined and 70.7% were infested by ectoparasites. the prevalence rates of infestation by ticks, fleas, and lice were 58.5, 43.9 and 22%, respectively. of 24 dogs parasitized by ticks, 15 were exclusively infested by rhipicephalus sanguineus (latreille) (32 females, 66 males, 9 nymphs; prevalence, 48.8%; mean intensity, 5.4), four by amblyomma ovale koch (33 females, 19 males; prevalence, 22%; mean intensity, 5.8), and five were coinfested by both species. ctenocephalides felis felis (bouché) (25 females, 8 males; prevalence, 43.9%; mean intensity, 1.9) and heterodoxus spiniger (enderlein) (16 females, 11 males, 10 nymphs; prevalence, 22%; mean intensity, 4.1) were the only species of flea and louse identified. tick infestation was more frequent than flea or lice infestations (p < 0.05). no statistical difference was found by sex and age group of the dogs studied and prevalence of infestation. overall, 48.8% (20/41) of the dogs were infested by more than one ectoparasite species.
Clinical evaluation of dentin hypersensitivity treatment with the low intensity Gallium-Aluminum-Arsenide laser - AsGaAl
Gentile, Luciana Chucre;Greghi, Sebasti?o Luiz Aguiar;
Journal of Applied Oral Science , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-77572004000400003
Abstract: the dentin hypersensitivity is a painful condition rather prevalent in the general population. there are several ways of treatment for such condition, including the low intensity lasers. the proposal of this study was to verify the effectiveness of the gallium-aluminum-arsenide diode laser in the treatment of this painful condition, using a placebo as control. materials and methods: thirty-two patients were selected, 22 females and 10 males, with ages ranging from 20 to 52 years old. the 32 patients were randomly distributed into two groups, treated and control; the sample consisted of 68 teeth, 35 in the treated group and 33 in the control group. the treated group was exposed to six laser applications with intervals from 48 to 72 hours, and the control group received, as placebo, applications of a curing light. results: a significant reduction was observed in the pain condition between the initial phase and after six laser applications; however, such reduction could also be observed for the control group exposed to the placebo. conclusion: therapy with the low intensity gallium-aluminum-arsenide laser - asgaal induces a statistically significant reduction in the painful condition after each application and between the beginning and end of treatment, although there was no statistically significant difference between the treated group (laser) and the control group (placebo) at the end of treatment and after the mediate evaluation results (after 6 weeks), this way impairing the real measurement of laser effectiveness and placebo effect.

Revista de Administra??o (S?o Paulo) , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0080-21072012000300004
Abstract: social businesses present a new paradigm to capitalism, in which private companies, non-profit organizations and civil society create a new type of business with the main objective of solving social problems with financial sustainability and efficiency through market mechanisms. as any new phenomenon, different authors conceptualize social businesses with distinct views. this article aims to present and characterize three different perspectives of social business definitions: the european, the american and that of the emerging countries. each one of these views was illustrated by a different brazilian case. we conclude with the idea that all the cases have similar characteristics, but also relevant differences that are more than merely geographical. the perspectives analyzed in this paper provide an analytical framework for understanding the field of social businesses. moreover, the cases demonstrate that in the brazilian context the field of social business is under construction and that as such it draws on different conceptual influences to deal with a complex and challenging reality.
Novas competências profissionais em saúde e o envelhecimento populacional brasileiro: integralidade, interdisciplinaridade e intersetorialidade

Abstract: this paper discusses the challenges faced by medical education with regard to the aging brazilian population as well as the specificities of senior health care services, aiming at systematizing the contents and practices needed to prepare health professionals. the assumption is based on a clear gap between appropriate contents for quality geriatric practices and health policy guidelines on the one hand, and current undergraduate and graduate level medical programs on the other. this epidemiological and demographic transition positions geriatrics and gerontology as fields of expertise in an expanding market, both in the public and private sectors, which raises the discussion on medical training standardization and health hr distribution. however, the little emphasis given to these fields in current curricula does not only reflect a mere pedagogical issue. in spite of the existing legislation, everything points to the fact that the importance of these contents to society is not yet clear. including the aging process in undergraduate programs as part of the life course and in all of its aspects is a priority for the brazilian population. a broad discussion on the role played by graduate, permanent, and continuing education is needed in order to face the challenge of quality aging.
Effect of methyl parathion on the muscle and brain acetylcholinesterase activity of matrinx? (Brycon cephalus)
Almeida, Luciana Cristina de;Aguiar, Lúcia Helena;Moraes, Gilberto;
Ciência Rural , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782005000600029
Abstract: farming of the freshwater fish is emerging in brazil and many species from the wild are promising. the teleost matrinx? (brycon cephalus) holds several characteristics such as fast growth rate, high commercial value and adaptability to artificial raring conditions, which make it a promising species for commerce. the use of pesticides in aquatic environment is frequent in brazil, and methyl parathion is very common in aquaculture. we have determined the enzymatic activity of acetyl cholinesterase in white muscle and brain of matrinx? exposed to 2ppm of environmental methyl parathion for 24 hours. there was 64% and 69% of acetyl cholinesterase inhibition in muscle and brain respectively. these activities were not recovered after 8 days from exposure to this pesticide. it can be concluded that acetyl cholinesterase from those tissues was inhibited by small amounts of methyl parathion, and the main effect was observed in the brain.
