Mathematical Modelling for a Multi-Product Inventory Routing Problem with Split Delivery  [PDF]

In this article, a multi-product inventory routing problem is studied. One-depot and many retailers in a finite time period are considered, and split delivery is allowed as well for the addressed problem. The objective is to minimize the overall cost including vehicle cost, inventory holding cost and transportation cost while the delivery schedule and the quantity of each product for each retailer have to be decided simultaneously. A mathematical model is presented for solving the addressed optimally and example is illustrated as well.
Message Cab (MCab): Partition Restoration in MANETs Using Flexible Helping Hosts  [PDF]

Abstract: Helping hosts are intensively used in various schemes to restore partitioned Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs).Most of the existing schemes offers only deterministic deployment and fixed routes for the helping hosts, and are thus not able to deal with fluctuating network traffic, which is a practical condition in many MANET applications. In this paper, we argue that flexible helping hosts (referred to as Message Cabs (MCabs)), with deployment and routes that response to the changes in the traffic demand of the network, may overcome this drawback and reduce the message delay in the networks. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this observation, we propose a new helping host scheme namely the Message Cab (MCab) scheme for partition restoration in MANETs, and validate the performance through simulations.
Conflict or Concert? Extending the Simmelian Triad to Account for Positive Third Party Presence in Face-to-Face Interviews with People Living with Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract: A number of sociologists and other researchers have focused on the role of third parties since Simmel’s seminal conceptualization of the social organization of the triad. However, less attention has been given to third party presence in qualitative interviews, despite the fact that third party participation in interviews with people with chronic illness and/or disability occurs frequently. Here too it is assumed that third party presence promotes conflict, ignoring the role of third parties as facilitators who enable informants to articulate their perspectives. Therefore, I focus on Simmel’s concept of the triad, concluding that the role of facilitator must be added to the types he describes.
Polarized Charginos (and Tops) in Stop Decays

Abstract: Current searches for direct production of scalar top quarks, or stops, in supersymmetry focus on their decays into W boson + b quark + neutralino by way of top + neutralino and bottom + chargino. While the polarization of the top quark depends on the stop mixing, the chargino turns out to be fully polarized when the bottom Yukawa coupling can be neglected relative the top Yukawa coupling. We compute the energy and angular spectra of the charged lepton in the chargino channel, which could serve as the spin-analyzer of the chargino. In addition, we demonstrate the top polarization could have a significant impact on the selection efficiencies in direct stop samples at the LHC, while the effect from the chargino polarization is less pronounced. Two observables in the laboratory frame, the opening angle between the charged lepton and the b quark and the energy of the b quark, are also proposed to optimize searches in the chargino channel versus the top channel.
Making Money from Exploiting Schumpeterian Opportunities: John Sanguinetti and the Electronic Design Automation Industry

Abstract: Accounts of the effect that John Sanguinetti’s two companies had on the market for integrated circuit design languages were used to gain insights on how to profit from the exploitation of Schumpeterian opportunities. This article will be of interest to entrepreneurs who expect to profit from exploiting opportunities that disrupt the status quo. To write this article, the author reviewed the literature on Schumpeterian and Kirznerian opportunities and examined the writings of and about Sanguinetti and his companies, blogs written by industry insiders, and articles in industry trade journals. Sanguinetti’s first company introduced a new technology and his second company introduced a new business strategy and a new technology. Both of Sanguinetti's companies undermined the capital investments of the established incumbents and created new value for customers. The article provides three main insights. First, deep knowledge and experience in the customer domain enable an entrepreneur to recognize and act to profit from a Schumpeterian opportunity. Second, to profit from a Schumpeterian opportunity the entrepreneur needs to combine technology and business model components in a way that adds significant value to customers. Third, large amounts of venture capital may or may not be required to exploit Schumpeterian opportunities.
Transformaciones del espacio público en la ciudad latinoamericana: cambios espaciales y prácticas sociales

Abstract: El espacio público está desapareciendo rápidamente, por causa de los procesos de globalización y privatización y también por las nuevas formas de control social; incluso las plazas, espacios cívicos de las ciudades latinoamericanas, están siendo cerradas, redise adas y reglamentadas en formas que restringen sus usos sociales y políticos tradicionales. Este artículo presenta el caso del Parque Central de San José de Costa Rica, analizando un conflicto contemporáneo relativo al dise o y uso de este importante espacio público urbano. Al mismo tiempo, a partir del caso de la Plaza de la Cultura, inaugurada recientemente en la misma ciudad, se explora el modo en que los objetivos artísticos y económicos de sus creadores no satisfacen las necesidades de los usuarios de la plaza, pero se acomodan a las del creciente comercio turístico. En esta discusión, las preocupaciones de los usuarios son contrastadas con las intenciones de los dise adores y oficiales gubernamentales, en orden a iluminar cómo el conflicto entre el valor representacional y de uso del espacio público es resuelto en un contexto específico.
University-Community Engagement: A grid-group analysis

Abstract: University-community engagement involves complex issues, entangling multiple and interacting points of view, all of which operate in a wider dynamic evolving social environment. For this reason, there is often disagreement about why engagement is necessary or desirable, and whether there is one optimal method to practice it. To address this issue, I argue that university-community engagement can be examined as a form of enquiry. In this view, engagement is viewed as a system that arises through the recognition of the dissent it embodies. As such, enquiry functions to process disagreements into diverse methods of communication. Most of the disagreements utilised by universities are derived from external sources, thus university-based enquiry must necessarily involve a dialogue with a broader community or environment. In this sense, university-community engagement can be viewed most generally as a method that processes disagreements into shared understandings through enquiry. To demonstrate how university-community engagement functions from an enquiry point of view, I use Mary Douglas’ grid-group diagramming method to develop a critical typology for classifying university-community engagement. My modified grid-group diagram provides a structured typological space within which four distinct methods of university-community engagement can be identified and discussed – both in relation to their internal communicational characteristics, and in relation to each other. The university-engagement grid-group diagram is constructed by locating each of Douglas’ four quadrants within Charles Peirce’s four methods of enquiry. Peirce’s work is introduced because each of his four methods of enquiry deals specifically with how disagreements are processed and resolved. When Peirce’s methods for fixing belief are located in Douglas’ grid-group diagram, they create a sense-making framework for university-community engagement. It is argued that the model offers a heuristic structure through which to view the diversity of university-community engagement and create shared understandings of the appropriateness of a wide range of possible engagement methods.
Developing Silicon IP with Open Source Tools

Abstract: The electronic design automation (EDA) tool industry is big business, and commercial licenses are extremely expensive. Open standards have driven many proprietary EDA technologies to be publicly released as free/libre open source software (F/LOSS) and some have become IEEE standards. Competition has partly given way to collaboration and has led to these standards. The development path of important EDA tools frequently now employs F/LOSS practices, which have overcome resistance to collaborative innovation between competing businesses. F/LOSS technologies are at the vanguard of leading-edge system-on-chip (SoC) design, not just because they are free, but also because they are valuable. The first commercial integrated circuits (ICs), designed by hand, helped guide manned space flight to the moon on the Apollo missions. In the past decade, silicon IP firms have shown they are limited only by their ideas, not by limited investment opportunities, and SoC firms have shown they can greatly reduce costs while innovating on the development of the largest new IC designs. This high-end technology is made accessible to startups because of open source. It is no longer just for mega-corporations. This article reviews the history of key advances in ICs and EDA tools. The common theme presented in this article for the driver of technology innovation is the requirement to develop the most advanced microprocessor possible. Today, a low-cost, high-value-added business model can efficiently serve the market for IC subsystems licensed as intellectual property (silicon IP) in the form of compilable source code. Alternatively, for larger SoC designs, engineering budgets can be shifted from the purchase of a relatively small number of high-cost EDA tool licenses to open source EDA technologies that can be run on massive compute-server farms. The two business models are not theoretical, but realistic. The author explains how his company (Crack Semiconductor) developed commercially successful cryptographic silicon IP using entirely open source EDA technologies and how another company (SiCortex) pushed the limits of IC design and open source EDA tools by simulating and verifying a massively parallel supercomputer.

Abstract: This perspective paper combines institutional and industrial network theory to develop a framework for analysing organisational legitimacy. The main subject, Nokia China, is found to be sensitive to network-legitimating initiatives, with consequences that accommodate multiple, conflicting stakeholders′ interests in China′s politically sensitive and protective telecommunications market. This paper offers new insights into institutional isomorphism that is manifested empirically as incremental conformity to regulative processes, institutional norms and cognitive knowledge and meanings within the environment, thereby extending commonly held views of institutional theory to include organisational legitimacy in industrial networks.
