Perceived Health, Physical Activity and Sport among the Elderly of Spain  [PDF]

Abstract:

Purpose: It determines if participating in sports and/or physical activity influences perceived health among the elderly. Basic procedures: Data were drawn from a population subsample of subjects aged 65 - 79 years old that took part in a survey conducted in 2008 by the IESA-CSIC. A regression model was performed with perceived health status with the dependent variable and sociodemographic characteristics and physical activity as independent variables. Results: Physical activity is closely associated to perceived health, although sport has little influence on this relationship. Conclusions: Doing exercise or feeling that one is physically active makes the elderly feel better about their health status. However, this age group practises few sports and sport is not found to have an important or constant influence on self-perceived health status among the elderly.

Abstract: El objetivo de la presente investigación es discernir cómo debe plantearse un aprendizaje en nuevas tecnologías, en especial, en redes sociales. Para esto, se analizará la dinámica neurológica y psicológica de las emociones y cómo se desenvuelven en el ámbito de las redes sociales. La metodología que emplearemos será acudir a diversos estudios neurológicos y psicológicos actuales, en especial de Antonio Damasio, para analizar posteriormente qué sucede con las emociones cuando nos comunicamos a través de redes sociales, tomando como referente un experimento neurológico de dicho autor en el cerebro de varios voluntarios que muestra la aparición de diversos tipos de emociones. Por último, extrapolaremos este experimento a la aparición de emociones si se utiliza como medio de comunicación las redes sociales y realizaremos algunas conclusiones acerca de la dirección a la que debe tender el aprendizaje de nuevas tecnologías, en especial, redes sociales, teniendo en cuenta dichas observaciones.The objective of this research is to discern how it should consider learning on new technologies, especially in social networks. For this, we examine the neurological and psychological dynamics of emotions and how they develop in the field of social networks. Our methodology will go to various neurological and psychological studies today, including Antonio Damasio and how to analyze what happens when we communicate emotions through social networks, by reference to a neurological experiment that copyright in the brain several volunteers that shows the appearance of various types of emotions. Finally, we extrapolate this experiment to the appearance of emotions when social networks are used as media and will make some conclusions about the direction you should aim to learn new technologies, especially social networks, taking into account such observations.

Abstract: Los adolescentes y jóvenes utilizan cada vez más las redes sociales como medio para interactuar y participar en la construcción de un discurso múltiple. Las empresas aprovechan las opciones de relación directa con los seguidores en las redes y utilizan estas estructuras virtuales para acercarse a su target . El objeto de este artículo es estudiar, mediante una metodología empírica y observacional, cómo construye Coca-Cola su imagen de marca en Tuenti , la red más seguida por este sector del público. Entre otros aspectos, observaremos de qué modo interviene la marca y cómo los seguidores; cuáles son los temas que se introducen en las entradas y a través de qué tipo de formatos. Como conclusión, advertimos que el interés de la marca de dejar libertad de expresión a los seguidores es solo una estrategia, en realidad las entradas de Coca-Cola son muy escasas pero todas ellas tienen un elevado efecto gancho , pues con un lenguaje que interpela al usuario para que se active y retome su discurso de manera dirigida. Además, no existe ningún tipo de mecanismo diferenciador entre la información, el entretenimiento y la publicidad, lo que, unido a la exposición continuada a impactos publicitarios a través de diferentes formatos, nos lleva a proponer la necesidad de una educación mediática para fomentar el uso responsable y crítico de las redes sociales por parte de los jóvenes. Teenagers and young adults are increasingly using social networks as a means to interact and participate in constructing a multiple speech. Companies take direct options with followers in networks and use these virtual structures to approach their target. The purpose of this paper is to study, using empirical and observational methodology, how to build Coca-Cola brand image in Tuenti , followed by the network over the public sector. Among other things, we will see how involved the brand and how followers, what are the issues that are introduced on the inputs and through what kind of formats. In conclusion, we noted that the interest in the brand of free speech to let the followers is just a strategy, the actual entries of Coca-Cola are very rare but they all have a high effect, a language that challenges the user to activate and resume his speech so directed. Moreover, there is no mechanism differentiating between information, entertainment and advertising, which combined with continued exposure to advertising impacts across different formats, leads us to propose the need for media education to encourage responsible use critic and social networks by young people.
Mamíferos de cuatro áreas con diferente grado de alteración en el sureste de México

Abstract: Se examinaron 458 especímenes de mamíferos, con el objetivo de comparar la diversidad de las especies en cuatro sitios del sureste de México con diferentes grados de alteración causada por la tala de árboles, la ganadería y la agricultura. Tomando en cuenta a todas las especies capturadas y registradas, el área con la mayor riqueza de especies fue Carlos A. Madrazo (n= 41), que se caracteriza por tener la vegetación mejor conservada seguida de Agua Dulce (n= 37), que presenta huertos y zonas cercanas con vegetación natural, mientras que Jalapita (n= 28) y El Espino (n= 10) fueron los sitios más alterados y con menor diversidad de mamíferos. Las diferencias en la riqueza específica de las cuatro áreas indican quela alteración redujo el número de especies que habitan la zona de estudio. Tabasco y Veracruz se encuentran entre los estados más alterados de México, y una gran parte de su vegetación original ha sido sustituida por pastizales. Por esta razón es urgente que las autoridades responsables de la conservación de las especies y el uso del suelo implementen un plan para que la gente conozca el uso sustentable de los recursos naturales con la finalidad de reorientar su manejo y protección.

Abstract: it was confirmed that the exposition to electromagnetic radiations (microwave radiations) provokes changes in the central nervous system, such as headache, fatigue, general weakness, asthenia, dizziness, bad mood, confusion, insomnia, depression, memory loss, and even suicide attempts together with changes in the cognitive sphere. this symptomatic complex has been called “syndrome of radiofrequencies”. the aim of this paper is to indicate the influence of electromagnetic field on the psychical activity in a group of subjects of the radiotechnical troops compared with a control group non-related to this specialty. the study included a psychiatric and psychological evaluation, and it used the medical history as a survey. a group of psychological tests were also applied. an increase of the amount of exposed subjects with decreased memory, and a greater number of individuals with severe anxiety and depression compared with the control group were observed.
Armed Rollers: Does Nestling’s Vomit Function as a Defence against Predators?

Abstract: Chemical defences against predators are widespread in the animal kingdom although have been seldom reported in birds. Here, we investigate the possibility that the orange liquid that nestlings of an insectivorous bird, the Eurasian roller (Coracias garrulus), expel when scared at their nests acts as a chemical defence against predators. We studied the diet of nestling rollers and vomit origin, its chemical composition and deterrent effect on a mammal generalist predator. We also hypothesized that nestling rollers, as their main prey (i.e. grasshoppers) do from plants, could sequester chemicals from their prey for their use. Grasshoppers, that also regurgitate when facing to a threat, store the harmful substances used by plants to defend themselves against herbivores. We found that nestling rollers only vomit after being grasped and moved. The production of vomit depended on food consumption and the vomit contained two deterrent chemicals (hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic acids) stored by grasshoppers and used by plants to diminish herbivory, suggesting that they originate from the rollers’ prey. Finally, we showed for the first time that the oral secretion of a vertebrate had a deterrent effect on a model predator because vomit of nestling rollers made meat distasteful to dogs. These results support the idea that the vomit of nestling rollers is a chemical defence against predators.
Propuesta y evaluación de un modelo estadístico para el control de la calidad de las serologías VDRL/RPR Proposal and evaluation of a statistical model for the quality control of veneral disease research laboratories/rapid plasma reagin serologies

Abstract: Introducción: la finalidad de todo laboratorio de control de la calidad del diagnóstico serológico de sífilis es controlar su correcta realización. Objetivo: evaluar una propuesta de modelo estadístico para tabular los resultados de los laboratorios adscritos al control de la calidad de diagnóstico de serología VDRL (venereal disease research laboratories)/RPR (rapid plasma reagin) para la evaluación y atención diferenciada a estos. Métodos: se elaboró un modelo para la recogida de información de los 21 laboratorios de la red en Villa Clara durante 2006-2010 y se hicieron modificaciones hasta llegar a la versión final. Se definieron las variables sueros enviados, total discordantes, discordantes no reactivas, discordantes reactivas, envío por mes, y evaluación integral. Se establecieron criterios de estimación para cada variable. Se presenta la evaluación del modelo con la información del trimestre enero-marzo de 2011. Resultados: la propuesta permitió detectar que las principales dificultades radican en el no cumplimiento del número de sueros enviados, no se recepcionan muestras mensualmente y además se presentan resultados discordantes. El modelo resulta justo al valorar porque se utilizan criterios cuantitativos generalizados que posibilitan dar una evaluación cualitativa individualizada, y se corresponde con las técnicas evaluativas actuales que se aplican en diferentes esferas del quehacer social. Conclusiones: el modelo estadístico valorado permite la tabulación de datos desde el laboratorio provincial de control de la calidad, a través de las variables propuestas y así evaluar a cada laboratorio. Objective: to evaluate the proposal of a statistical model to tabulate the results of the laboratories involved in the quality control of the veneral disease research laboratories-rapid plasma reagin serology for the assessment of and customized attention to them. Methods: a model for the collection of information from the 21 laboratories of Villa Clara's provincial network in the 2006-2010 period was designed and refined until the final version was reached. The defined variables comprised Number of sent sera, Total discordant, Nonreactive Discordant, Reactive Discordant, Shipping by month and Final evaluation were defined. Abstract: electromagnetic waves emitted by ultrahigh frequency fields (0.3 - 3 ghz) bears danger of biological effects that may become side effects to health. one of these side effects is the redox imbalance with an increase in the production of free radicals, and a decrease of the antioxidant defenses. for that reason, the objective of this paper was to know the influences of electromagnetic radiations on a group of exposed persons and to compare it with another group of non-exposed individuals taken as controls. an increase of superoxide-dismutase, a rise of h 2 0 2 , a decrease of the total antioxidant capacity of plasma, a growth of malondihaldehyde, and no changes in catalase concentration were observed in exposed subjects. it is concluded that a redox imbalance is produced in this group.
A Phase I, Dose-Finding Study of Sorafenib in Combination with Gemcitabine and Radiation Therapy in Patients with Unresectable Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: A Grupo Espa?ol Multidisciplinario en Cáncer Digestivo (GEMCAD) Study

Abstract: Purpose Sorafenib, an oral inhibitor of B-raf, VEGFR2, and PDGFR2-beta, acts against pancreatic cancer in preclinical models. Due to the radio-sensitization activity of both sorafenib and gemcitabine, we designed a multicenter, phase I trial to evaluate the safety profile and the recommended dose of this combination used with concomitant radiation therapy. Methods Patients with biopsy-proven, unresectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma (based on vascular invasion detected by computed tomography) were treated with gemcitabine (300 mg/m2 i.v. weekly ×5 weeks) concurrently with radiation therapy (45 Gy in 25 fractions) and sorafenib (escalated doses in a 3+3 design, from 200 to 800 mg/day). Radiation portals included the primary tumor but not the regional lymph nodes. Patients with planning target volumes (PTV) over 500 cc were excluded. Cases not progressing during chemoradiation were allowed to continue with sorafenib until disease progression. Results Twelve patients were included. Three patients received 200 mg/day, 6 received 400 mg/day, and 3 received 800 mg/day; PTVs ranged from 105 to 500 cc. No dose-limiting toxicities occurred. The most common grade 2 toxicities were fatigue, neutropenia, nausea, and raised serum transaminases. Treatment was discontinued in one patient because of a reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy. There were no treatment-related deaths. Conclusion The addition of sorafenib to concurrent gemcitabine and radiation therapy showed a favorable safety profile in unresectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Increased Erythrocytes By-Products of Arginine Catabolism Are Associated with Hyperglycemia and Could Be Involved in the Pathogenesis of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a worldwide disease characterized by metabolic disturbances, frequently associated with high risk of atherosclerosis and renal and nervous system damage. Here, we assessed whether metabolites reflecting oxidative redox state, arginine and nitric oxide metabolism, are differentially distributed between serum and red blood cells (RBC), and whether significant metabolism of arginine exists in RBC. In 90 patients with type 2 DM without regular treatment for diabetes and 90 healthy controls, paired by age and gender, we measured serum and RBC levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitrites, ornithine, citrulline, and urea. In isolated RBC, metabolism of L-[14C]-arginine was also determined. In both groups, nitrites were equally distributed in serum and RBC; citrulline predominated in serum, whereas urea, arginine, and ornithine were found mainly in RBC. DM patients showed hyperglycemia and increased blood HbA1C, and increased levels of these metabolites, except for arginine, significantly correlating with blood glucose levels. RBC were observed to be capable of catabolizing arginine to ornithine, citrulline and urea, which was increased in RBC from DM patients, and correlated with an increased affinity for arginine in the activities of putative RBC arginase (Km = 0.23±0.06 vs. 0.50±0.13 mM, in controls) and nitric oxide synthase (Km = 0.28±0.06 vs. 0.43±0.09 mM, in controls). In conclusion, our results suggest that DM alters metabolite distribution between serum and RBC, demonstrating that RBC regulate serum levels of metabolites which affect nitrogen metabolism, not only by transporting them but also by metabolizing amino acids such as arginine. Moreover, we confirmed that urea can be produced also by human RBC besides hepatocytes, being much more evident in RBC from patients with type 2 DM. These events are probably involved in the specific physiopathology of this disease, i.e., endothelial damage and dysfunction.
