RADIAL VARIATION OF MICROFIBRIL ANGLE AND WOOD DENSITY AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS IN 14-YEAR-OLD Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. BLAKE WOOD

Abstract: The orientation of cellulose microfibrils in the cell wall along the stem axis has major effects on stiffness and longitudinal shrinkage and is of key importance in wood quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the radial variability of MFA and wood density (ρ) and their relationships in Eucalyptus urophylla wood. Three MFA values were estimated by X-ray diffraction at three points of each one of the 175 tangential sections, and the basic density was measured. A decrease of microfibril angles from pith to bark can be observed in most samples; however, some radial strips presented different patterns of variation. For basic density, a linear significant increase from pith to bark was confirmed. There was no significant correlation between microfibril angle and density. The relationships among the three MFA estimated on tangential sections of wood were strong. The “curvature effect” due to the growth rings had a negligible effect on the three measurements of tangential sections cut near to the pith. This study showed that a single T value measurement by X-ray diffraction, preferably at the centre of the tangential section, is precisely sufficient to estimate the mean MFA of Eucalyptus urophylla wood.
EFFECT OF SOAKING PROCESS IN WATER ON THE ACOUSTICAL QUALITY OF WOOD FOR TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Abstract: The damping coefficient of the first mode in the longitudinal vibration of mulberry and walnut woods was characterized to find justifications for the water soaking of woods in traditional musical instrument industries in Iran. Visually clear and sound beams were prepared from Morus alba and Juglans regia, and the damping coefficient in the temporal field was evaluated before and after three continuous cycles of soaking of specimens in distilled water (24 hours, pH 7, and temperature 50 oC). Experiments were conducted with free longitudinal vibration using the free-free bar method in 360×20×20 (L×R×T) dimensions. Soaking cycles homogenized and decreased the damping coefficient in both species. On the basis of such results, the suitability of water soaked specimens is discussed in traditional musical instrument industries in Iran, taking into the account the longitudinal sound velocity, modulus of elasticity, and density affecting the acoustic limits. These two series of testing specimens were suitable in resonators and xylophone bars for backs, sides, and ribs and not for top plates, unless as the outstanding piece, since they marginally meet the density, sound velocity and damping coefficient limits qualified for those applications.
Searching for material symmetries in the burr wood of thuja by a direct contact ultrasonic method on spherical samples

Abstract: This work is part of a program that aims at studying the burr wood of thuja (Tetraclinis articulata). The goal of this work is to identify material symmetries of burr wood to improve its machining. To have a sufficient number of data and to limit the variability between samples, an ultrasonic experimental device, in direct contact on spherical samples, has been developed and improved. Until now, the geometry used in direct contact ultrasonic methods was either cubic or polyhedral allowing to obtain, on the same sample, 3 (cube) to 13 (polyhedron) measurements or usable data. By choosing a reasonable angular gap, the spherical geometry allows the ultrasonic velocity to be measured in 133 different directions on the same specimen. We present here the adaptation and development of the ultrasonic experimental device and results obtained on (i) aluminum chosen as a reference material, (ii) beech wood and (iii) burr wood of thuja.

Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the world leading causes of death. It has been recently related to aging and inflammation, as well as sirtuins are actually recognized to be involved in both these phenomena. Sirtuins are a family of highly conserved protein deacetylases and they influence the factors that worsen physiological aging such as glucose metabolism, DNA stability and cancer, neurodegenerative processes, etc. Among the seven sirtuins, SIRT1 and SIRT6 have been deeply investigated in COPD. Actually researchers hypothesize that SIRT 1 activators could play a fundamental role in counteract COPD. Natural compounds as Resveratrol are actually retained SIRT1 activators and could be indicated as powerful weapons against this complex disease.
Virus-induced Systemic Vasculitides: New Therapeutic Approaches

Abstract: The best therapeutic strategy in virus-induced vasculitides should take into account the etiology of the disease and be adapted to the pathogenesis. The combination of antiviral treatments and plasma exchanges has been proven effective in polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related vasculitis this strategy is also effective and does not jeopardize, like cytotoxic agents, the outcome of AIDS. In vasculitis related to HCV-associated cryoglobulinemia, plasma exchanges improve the outcome but the poor effectiveness of antiviral drugs is not able to favor, usually, a definite recovery of the patients and relapses are frequent.
A Modified Stochastic Gompertz Model for Tumour Cell Growth

Abstract: Based upon the deterministic Gompertz law of cell growth, we have proposed a stochastic model of tumour cell growth, in which the size of the tumour cells is bounded. The model takes account of both cell fission (which is an ‘action at a distance’ effect) and mortality too. Accordingly, the density function of the size of the tumour cells obeys a functional Fokker–Planck Equation (FPE) associated with the bounded stochastic process. We apply the Lie-algebraic method to derive the exact analytical solution via an iterative approach. It is found that the density function exhibits an interesting kink-like structure generated by cell fission as time evolves.
The Sum and Difference of Two Lognormal Random Variables

Abstract: We have presented a new unified approach to model the dynamics of both the sum and difference of two correlated lognormal stochastic variables. By the Lie-Trotter operator splitting method, both the sum and difference are shown to follow a shifted lognormal stochastic process, and approximate probability distributions are determined in closed form. Illustrative numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of these approximate distributions. In terms of the approximate probability distributions, we have also obtained an analytical series expansion of the exact solutions, which can allow us to improve the approximation in a systematic manner. Moreover, we believe that this new approach can be extended to study both (1) the algebraic sum of N lognormals, and (2) the sum and difference of other correlated stochastic processes, for example, two correlated CEV processes, two correlated CIR processes, and two correlated lognormal processes with mean-reversion.

Abstract: this article draws on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in a boxing gym located in chicago's black ghetto. it aims at explaining how prizefighters perceive and express the fact of being live commodities, and how they manage to reconcile themselves to ruthless exploitation in ways that enable them to maintain a sense of personal integrity and moral purpose. the boxer's experience of bodily exploitation is expressed in three related idioms, those of prostitution, slavery, and animal husbandry. all three tropes simultaneously enounce the immoral marketing of bodies. but this is neutralized by the belief in the normalcy of exploitation, in the "agency" of corporeal entrepreneurship, and in the possibility of individual exceptionalism. this belief, inscribed in the bodily dispositions of the fighter, helps to produce the collective misrecognition whereby boxers collude in their own commercialization.
