Machado,Helena;
Etnográfica , 2011,
Abstract: this paper analyses the discourses produced by experts and politicians about the creation of a dna database for civil identification and criminal investigation purposes in portugal, aiming to explore some stances in the construction of biosecurity. three main types of arguments are found: science as the support of a simultaneously more effective and reliable justice; the need to follow the course of more developed countries in terms of criminal investigation and trans-border cooperation; the contribution towards the common good. this concerns an increasingly global technical-genetic and biopolitical project, merged within collective imageries built upon on fears of crime and criminals, which is more grounded on promises of imagined utility and efficacy in the identification of offenders than on the invocation of the risks and uncertainties.

Criminal Genomic Pragmatism: Prisoners' Representations of DNA Technology and Biosecurity
Helena Machado,Susana Silva
Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/592364
Abstract: Background. Within the context of the use of DNA technology in crime investigation, biosecurity is perceived by different stakeholders according to their particular rationalities and interests. Very little is known about prisoners’ perceptions and assessments of the uses of DNA technology in solving crime. Aim. To propose a conceptual model that serves to analyse and interpret prisoners’ representations of DNA technology and biosecurity. Methods. A qualitative study using an interpretative approach based on 31 semi-structured tape-recorded interviews was carried out between May and September 2009, involving male inmates in three prisons located in the north of Portugal. The content analysis focused on the following topics: the meanings attributed to DNA and assessments of the risks and benefits of the uses of DNA technology and databasing in forensic applications. Results. DNA was described as a record of identity, an exceptional material, and a powerful biometric identifier. The interviewees believed that DNA can be planted to incriminate suspects. Convicted offenders argued for the need to extend the criteria for the inclusion of DNA profiles in forensic databases and to restrict the removal of profiles. Conclusions. The conceptual model entitled criminal genomic pragmatism allows for an understanding of the views of prison inmates regarding DNA technology and biosecurity.
Silva, Susana;Machado, Helena;
Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832009000300004
Abstract: our aim is to contribute towards the debate about the processes through which knowledge and meanings regarding the status of human embryos circulate among experts and laymen in portugal. expectations and concerns expressed regarding the reliability, quality, safety and efficacy of medical technologies for assisted reproduction were assessed. this study is based on data from individual interviews that sought to explore the complexities, similarities and differences among the views and values of jurists, doctors and couples involved in in vitro fertilization treatments. it consists of a qualitative analysis on a case study. if jurists and doctors frame the status of embryos as categories of a biological, technical and/or legal nature, couples establish between themselves a variety of ontological relationships of a moral, affective and social nature. through these, they can be represented as ethical beings, thus contrasting with the medical-legal biologization of the embryos.
Machado, Luiza Helena Barreira;
Sociedade & Natureza , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1982-45132009000100011
Abstract: the use of herbs is common among the various societies. during this particular time and use the knowledge directly linked to it were ignored and even overlooked. however, this is a habit that remained and withstood the test of time and the medical hegemony, since existence of people trading medicinal plants is commonly found from small towns to cities in brazil and worldwide. more than a common and simple existence of traders of medicinal plants, this existence raises questions about why, how, where, what the connections, which ensures the existence and / or resistance.to reveal the relationship this kind of people establish with the cerrado - biome that covers much of central brazil - to understand their arrival and stay in the city, its cultural roots leads us to look like the cerrado is perceived and represented by them. thus, we propose a brief reflection on the representations in the study of medicinal plants in goiania. these meanings and relationships established show that is possible to understand this universe and its knowledge that currently invading the worlds urban, academic, scientific and political. to do this analysis we seek a cultural geography of identifying the rooters (raizeiros), their knowledge, their views and representations on the cerrado.
Silva,Susana; Machado,Helena;
Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas , 2010,
Abstract: this text seeks to problematise the criteria that delimit a man and/or woman?s ability to take advantage of medically assisted proceation in portugal; it also seeks to reflect on the possibility that these elements boost the (re)production of inequalities in access to reproductive health. the empirical basis of this discussion is an analysis of the legal/political and medical governance of appropriate patients, based on interviews with jurists and medical doctors. it is concluded that the main restrictions on access to these technologies are associated with a hierarchical construction of the political and social priorities that reflects the dominant ideological expectations and social relations, in particular regarding the following aspects: the privatisation and individualisation of reproductive health; the cultural imposition of heterosexuality; and the expansion in the fame of the effectiveness of techno-medicine.

This text discusses some aspects of the local configurations of representations and social uses of DNA technology in criminal investigations in Portugal. The approach to the sociotechnical network which aligns forensic science with state governance policies, criminal investigation practices and laws, and the cultural imaginaries surrounding DNA and criminal investigation work is based on the concepts of biolegality and the forensic imaginary, which are, in turn, anchored in notions of biocitizenship and bioidentification, respectively. An interpretative and qualitative theoretical methodological perspective has been adopted, based on the analysis of legislation and of the meanings and relevance attributed to the use of DNA technology by elements of the Criminal Police. The objective is to discuss aspects of the local tensions created by processes involving the export of DNA technology, which has its origins in societies and cultures with different traditions of technology governance, of regulation of criminal investigation procedures and of submission of evidence in court.
