The Community of Practice for the Integration of Emerging Technologies (CITE aims to help integrate emerging information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the services offered by the academic libraries at the University of Puerto Rico. The purpose of this research is to explore and describe the perception of librarians on how the activities of CITE members have impacted library services. It will consider both, the perception of library staff working in the libraries of the University of Puerto Rico, and other institutions of higher education. This research will allow the librarian to know the initiatives developed in academic and public libraries and also provide recommendations on basic strategies for integrating social tools to the library services. Currently this documentation is not available, for that reason, this work is unique in Puerto Rico. The research will contribute in creating a common knowledge base for librarians from Puerto Rico and will serve as a benchmark to motivate information professionals in the use and integration of emerging technologies in information services.

Abstract: From the colonial disaster, the anticlericalism was a weapon of the republicans against the Monarchy. In the II Republic old prejudices are emerging just to justify the lay legislation of that moment.

Abstract: A suspension of 15nm diameter gold nanoparti-cles has been deposited along a line on a silicon substrate with the assistance of a jet generated in an electric field. In order to control the evaporation of the solvent used to suspend the gold nanoparticles, a heating device was used to change the substrate temperature. Layer-by- layer deposition enabled the direct writing of gold tracks having an electrical resistivity of 1.8 × 10-7 Ωm, only about an order of magnitude above the electrical resistivity of bulk gold.
Moisture-induced solid state instabilities in α-chymotrypsin and their reduction through chemical glycosylation

Abstract: First, we investigated the consequences of moisture sorption on the stability and structural conformation of the model enzyme α-chymotrypsin (α-CT) under controlled humidity conditions. Results showed that α-CT aggregates and inactivates as a function of increased relative humidity (RH). Furthermore, α-CT loses its native secondary and tertiary structure rapidly at increasing RH. In addition, H/D exchange studies revealed that α-CT structural dynamics increased at increasing RH. The magnitude of the structural changes in tendency parallels the solid-state instability data (i.e., formation of buffer-insoluble aggregates, inactivation, and loss of native conformation upon reconstitution). To determine if these moisture-induced instability issues could be ameliorated by chemical glycosylation we proceeded to modify our model protein with chemically activated glycans of differing lengths (lactose and dextran (10 kDa)). The various glycoconjugates showed a marked decrease in aggregation and an increase in residual activity after incubation. These stabilization effects were found to be independent of the glycan size.Water sorption leads to aggregation, inactivation, and structural changes of α-CT as has been similarly shown to occur for many other proteins. These instabilities correlate with an increase in protein structural dynamics as a result of moisture exposure. In this work, we present a novel methodology to stabilize proteins against structural perturbations in the solid-state since chemical glycosylation was effective in decreasing and/or preventing the traditionally observed moisture-induced aggregation and inactivation. It is suggested that the stabilization provided by these chemically attached glycans comes from the steric hindrance that the sugars conveys on the protein surface therefore preventing the interaction of the protein internal electrostatics with that of the water molecules and thus reducing the protein structural dynamics upon moisture exposure.Ma

Abstract: introduction: the complications of the mixed hernia need, often, surgical treatment. in the asymtomatic patients this one treatment is controversial, due to her complex repair and the high percentage of relapse informed in the long term. the surgical classic routes, they present raised morbi-mortality related to the extent of the incisions, to long hospitable stays and slow recovery. material and methods: between october, 2001 to november, 2007 we check 39 patients with hernia hiatal mixed with a middle ages of 65 years (35-78 years). in lloyd-davies's position, the content diminishes hernia and the redundant sack is resected. the diaphragmatic props are sutured by material not reabsorbable. mesh of reinforcement intervened in 7/39 repairs. it concludes with a partial or complete antirreflux depending on the report. results: the operative average time was of 126 min; the hospital stay of 2.46 days. the complications perioperatives are principally cardiorespiratory. a patient died for an intestinal inadvertent perforation during the intervention and of late diagnosis. we realize traffic gastroduodenal to 12 months in 28 patients (71.7%). we find relapse in 8 patients (20.5%). four asymtomatic patients, with chance find in the radiological control. three patients with pirosis that needs treatment and one of the relapses needed reintervention for strangulation of a gastric volvulus. conclusions: the laparoscopic surgery offers safety and efficiency with rapid postoperatory recovery, minor morbidity and hospitable stay. after the surgery, the long-term relapse presents similar results to the opened surgery, though the interposition of mesh can propitiate her decrease.

Por el hecho de evitar el trauma quirúrgico y permitir una pronta recuperación del paciente lo creemos actualmente el tratamiento de elección Morgagni hernia is an uncommon congenital defect of the anterior diaphragm that can be asymptomatic or cause symptoms, depending of the contents of the hernia sac.
