Vitamina D e doen?as endocrinometabólicas
Schuch, Natielen Jacques;Garcia, Vivian Cristina;Martini, Ligia Araújo;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302009000500015
Abstract: vitamin d insufficiency/deficiency has been worldwide reported in all age groups in recent years. it has been considered a public health matter since decreased levels of vitamin d has been related to several chronic diseases, as type 2 diabetes mellitus (t2dm), obesity and hypertension. glucose intolerance and insulin secretion has been observed during vitamin d deficiency, both in animals and humans resulting in t2dm. the supposed mechanism underlying these findings is presence of vitamin d receptor in several tissues and cells, including pancreatic β-cells, adipocyte and muscle cells. in obese individuals, the impaired vitamin d endocrine system, characterized by high levels of pth and 1,25(oh)2d3 could induce a negative feedback for the hepatic synthesis of 25(oh)d and also contribute to a higher intracellular calcium, which in turn secrete less insulin and deteriorate insulin sensitivy. in hypertension, vitamin d could act on renin-angiotensin system and also in vascular function. administration of 1,25(oh)2d3 could decreases renin gene expression and inhibit vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation. however, prospective and intervention human studies that clearly demonstrates the benefits of vitamin d status adequacy in the prevention and treatment of endocrine metabolic diseases are lacking. further research still necessary to assure the maximum benefit of vitamin d in such situations.

Abstract: understanding the effects of health decentralization policies in brazil requires different methodological approaches to capture the issue's complexity from distinct angles. five case studies were thus performed to evaluate the degree of implementation of components related to decentralization of the health system management in selected municipalities (counties) in bahia state, brazil. a logical model was elaborated with definitions related to policy goals. a comparative study of the five municipalities, considered "exemplary cases", showed that decentralization alone does not explain the organizational changes in the municipal health systems. local government characteristics such as the municipal master plan, governing capacity, and governance proved important for heath care changes. the main problems and insufficiencies were found in the system's management and quality of healthcare delivered to the population. the authors discuss their findings and identify critical areas for future interventions with special emphasis on the institutionalization of planning and evaluation and the development of inter-sector projects.

Abstract: purpose: to identify speech-language pathology manifestations presented by children with congenital hypothyroidism, and to investigate the association of such manifestations with the time of diagnosis and beginning of treatment. methods: caregivers of 15 children diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism who attended the reference service on neonatal screening of the states of rond?nia and acre answered a questionnaire in which they should report mainly speech-language pathology complaints. children's age ranged from 2 to 7 years, 67% of boys and 33% of girls. the average age at the time of diagnosis was 1 month and 3 days, and treatment started, in average, at 1 month and 6 days. the dosage of the drug varied from 5 mg/day to 100 mg/day. results: the complaints reported were: delay in the onset of oral language, speech alterations, unintelligible speech, agitated and nervous behavior. some caregivers did not report any complaints. it was found that most subjects had problems with speech (80%), and a few had hearing impairment (7.7%). for those who reported complaints, mean time of diagnosis and beginning of treatment was delayed when compared to those who did not report. conclusion: speech-language pathology manifestations were reported, especially regarding speech. moreover, there was association between the presence of complaints and speech disorders with the time of diagnosis and beginning of treatment. it is suggested the inclusion of the speech-language pathologist and audiologist in the team monitoring the development of children with congenital hypothyroidism.
Milk intake and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and prostate cancer
Martini, Ligia Araújo;Wood, Richard James;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302009000500021
Abstract: milk intake is widely recommended for a healthy diet. recent evidences suggest that milk/dairy products are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and hypertension. on the other hand, high calcium intake has been associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer. the calcium and vitamin d content in dairy foods could have beneficial effects on glucose metabolism and renin/angiotensin system as well regulates body weight. the association between high dairy/calcium consumption and prostate cancer risk are related to the presence of estrogens and insulin like growth factor (igf-i) in milk. based on the current evidence, it is possible that milk/dairy products, when consumed in adequate amounts and mainly with reduced fat content, has a beneficial effect on the prevention of hypertension and diabetes. its potential role in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer is not well supported and requires additional study.

Ana Cristina ARAúJO
Cuadernos Dieciochistas , 2009,
ABSTRACT: In the 18th century the discussion around truth’s timeless rationality compromises the theological field’s unity. Aside scholasticism, this knowledge area’s renewing goes through biblical Exegesis, ecclesiastical history’s and critical reason’s valorization. In Portugal, Frei Manuel do Cenáculo Vilas Boas, Luis Antonio Verney and the member of the Junta da Providência Literária contribute, with their reformist ideas and projects, to the modernization of Theology’s conventual and universitarian teaching. In this process, the University of Coimbra’s reform (1772) also marks the Pombalist regalism’s triumph.
Além do ocidente, além do estado e muito além da moral: por uma política eticamente responsável em rela??o à diferen?a - o caso Ruandês
Alves, Ana Cristina Araújo;
Contexto Internacional , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-85292005000200002
Abstract: drawing on a post-modern/post-structuralist approach in international relations, this article aims to make an analysis of the un's decision taken in april 21, 1994 about the establishment of unamir as a response to the violence in rwanda. we emphasize the assessment of the ethical responsibility of the organization, in terms of the radical re-articulation of the concepts of ethics, responsibility, and subjectivity, as proposed by emmanuel levinas. we look for the implications of that decision in terms of the consequences it permitted - that is, the rwandan genocide, the increasing of the violence over time allowed by turquoise operation, and the reorganization of the genociders in the refugees' camps. besides, we intend to look upon a deeper theme, which underlies the permissive conditions of those tragic consequences: the sovereign-territorial-state principle domination in the contemporary political imagination. the hard boundaries between inside/outside, state/refugee camp, domestic/international derived from that principle imposed also a compartmentalization in the arena of formulation of policies to deal with the humanitarian crisis that followed the genocide. this fragmented way to deal with such a complex and multifaceted problem, for its turn, resulted in politics that distorted the priorities and undermined the effectiveness of the assistance programs, as well as alienated the newly installed government.

Araújo, Eliane Cristina de;
Revista de Economia Contemporanea , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-98482010000300002
Abstract: the article analyses, theoretically and empirically, the relationship between exchange rate level and economic growth in emerging and developing countries. firstly, the exchange rate policy objectives are discussed, emphasizing the importance of this policy to generate economic growth. continuing, the article explores the channels through which exchange rates can affect economic growth, highlighting its stimulus to investment, export of non-traditional goods, productivity as well as its compensation to market failures and its stimulus to export income-elasticity. in the empirical part, a measure of exchange rate undervaluation based on rodrik (2007) is built for 82 emerging and developing countries, between 1980 and 2007. this measure is used to investigate the relationship between devalued exchange rate and economic growth, by econometric techniques for panel data. the result of the estimations point out the positive correlation between undervalued exchange rate and economic growth, confirming the importance of the exchange rate as an instrument to promote economic growth and development.

Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente , 2001,
Abstract: The article presents reflection about the occupation process data on the expansion of east part of metropolitan region, specially focusing the territory of municipalities of Pinhais, Piraquara and S o Josédos Pinhais where are fundamental water sources for regional public consumption. The break down of these water resources is foreseen in three decades ahead and this situation was improved by irregular forms of occupation of areas where the regional planning had fixed strategy of preservation since 1978. At the present times the irregular occupations and invasions are increasing in a very high speed andproportion what constitute harder situation for conservancy practices.
