Abstract: As strategic and systems approaches are becoming more relevant in design education when it concerns collaborative projects with the industry, an explicit systems design methodology is needed to structure collaboration and learning among students, educators, and the Norwegian industry. This article describes three alternative studio projects for teaching strategic and systems design with the involvement of Norwegian companies. Besides this, the approaches and fundamental theories of design thinking and reasoning, which are characteristic of these projects, were reflected against each other. In the undergraduate (year 2) systems thinking design studio, the challenge was to train students to understand how system elements are rationally interconnected with their suprasystems and subsystems based on usability and man-machine interactions. In addition to the challenges pertaining to systems thinking, collabora-tive learning and designing based on a mentorship learning concept were introduced in the Vertical Design Studio, which involved second- and third-year students. Concerning the postgraduate fourth-year strategic design projects with the industry, the challenge was to involve Norwegian companies in product planning and goal finding as well as in innovation and design activities and to assess how supportive and receptive these companies were towards radical innovation/diversification. The analysis of completed projects shows that the Norwegian industry is supportive of strategic design but is rather conservative and risk averse when it concerns accepting and implementing radical innovation initiatives. Referring to user-centred and context-based innovation, this article also supports the implementation of a systems approach to facilitate social and hierarchical learning across the second-year systems design studio, second- and third-year vertical studios, and fourth-year strategic design studio. Abstract: Innovation is the way of life of any institution to profitably sustain its life. It starts with empathy, the ability to reach outside of ourselves and walk in someone else’s shoes, and optimal implementation of the newly advanced technology. Innovation shows its results through continuously hard working efforts known as "10 Thousand Hours Rule". As world uncertainty creates complexity we, instead of predicting, should therefore anticipate the future by creating and managing real options on contingent projects or elements of alternative optimal strategies. This should reflect into our portfolio strategy. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia: Inovasi merupakan darah bagi suatu institusi untuk bisa hidup berkelanjutan serta menguntungkan. Inovasi berupa penemuan baru secara sistematis yang berawal dari empati, kemampuan untuk melihat dunia melalui mata orang lain, dan pemanfaatan secara optimal kemajuan teknologi yang ada. Inovasi baru menghasilkan buahnya melalui kerja keras, yaitu dengan mengikuti “Aturan 10 Ribu Jam” secara berkesinambungan. Ketidakpastian, interaksi, keterbatasan dan degradasi menciptakan kompleksitas tentang kebutuhan dan solusi di masa depan. Oleh sebab itu daripada meramalkan risiko yang bakal terjadi, kita sebaiknya memasang strategi berupa skenario untuk mereduksi akibat dari risiko masa depan yang tidak kita mengerti. Skenario ini dapat diperoleh lewat penciptaan dan penanganan beberapa pilihan nyata atas semua proyek antisipatif yang ada. Abstract: We enhanced DFSS Characterize and Optimize Phases to deal with multiple and functional response optimization. The enhancement basically starts with a development of functional meta-models of CAE outputs that are fast-to-compute and accurate enough within a certain design space. Having developed the multiple and functional meta-models, the influence of design variables to the functional responses are then obtained via visualization and sensitivity analysis based on Sobol's index. Multi-objective optimization is finally applied to search for design variable settings that give optimal functional responses. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Di artikel ini kita memperkaya fase-fase Characterize and Optimize dari design for six sigma (DFSS) methodology untuk bisa menyelesaikan rekayasa produk dan proses kompleks yang mengandung banyak respons fungsional. Pemerkayaan dimulai dengan pembangunan meta-model fungsional dari keluaran computer aided engineering (CAE) yang diperoleh lewat rancangan eksperimental. Kemudian, dilanjutkan dengan pembangunan sebuah algoritma untuk mengidentifikasi tingkat pengaruh dari variabel-variable rancangan ke respons fungsional secara visual maupun analitis. Akhirnya, optimasi multi obyektif diterapkan untuk mencari nilai-nilai variabel design yang mampu memberikan respons fungsional secara optimal dan tangguh. Abstract: In this paper we propose a framework for combining Disjunctive Logic Programming and Poole's Probabilistic Horn Abduction. We use the concept of hypothesis to specify the probability structure. We consider the case in which probabilistic information is not available. Instead of using probability intervals, we allow for the specification of the probabilities of disjunctions. Because minimal models are used as characteristic models in disjunctive logic programming, we apply the principle of indifference on the set of minimal models to derive default probability values. We define the concepts of explanation and partial explanation of a formula, and use them to determine the default probability distribution(s) induced by a program. An algorithm for calculating the default probability of a goal is presented.
Some Proximate Analysis of African Pear (Dacryodes Edulis)

Abstract: Some physical and chemical properties of African pear (Dacryodes edulis) samples from nine different trees were analysed in order to determine the level of differences that exist between trees. The length of the individual fruits ranged from 39.86 mm to 80.76 mm while the weight ranged from 15.97 g to 39.36 g. Significant differences (p . 0.05) were observed between the samples for all the parameters measured. Fruit density showed a negative correlation (r = -0.86) with the pulp/seed ratio. Significant differences were also observed in the proximate composition of the African pear pulp. The major components of the pulp were moisture (36.5% to 53.82%), oil (18.81% to 38.36%) and protein (11.09% to 19.19%). The pulp acidity ranged from 0.92% to 1.69% expressed as citric acid.
Uses and Gratifications of Home Videos among the Nigerian Teenage Audience: Implications for Cultural Development and Sustainability

Abstract: The fall out of the introduction of the video cassette recorder (VCR) in the mid-1970s has been the proliferation of home video films. And the dominant audience of this unique medium today is found among children and teenagers, which have employed it for various purposes. This work studies the gratifications sought by teenagers in Enugu-North Local Government Area of Enugu State in the home video films they watch. Using the survey research design and a population of 200 this work found that the preponderant of the population use home video for diversion and relaxation, while a sizable number use it to ease tension. The content and duration of watching put in this past time are different ball games. As much as 42 percent of those polled spend 3 -5 hours a day watching films. Their dominant genres are love, comedy, sex and children films. The implication of all this for cultural development and sustainability is that our youths have become captive audiences to immorality and alien culture. The researcher recommends a stricter regulation of this medium as well as training of continuous practitioners of the industry.
